I'm not a big PJ fan but I love this great debut! By far the best album they've ever released! And as I have said in previous videos on your channel, I appreciated Vedder's talent even more and a serious reason was the wonderful "Into the Wild"!!!
Interesting. I dig No Code from the first note to the last the very first time I heard it, and... I enjoy listening to it from beginning to end like we used to do with the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, etc...
Thanks for putting into words why I just can’t getting into anymore the band I loved as a teenager. I really think if they made a few free form abstract or concept albums if might help them get more creative. Most bands could benefit creatively by putting something out that their fans are not expecting and probably won’t like but something that excites the musicians.
12 to 1: avocado, gigaton, dark matter, backspacer, lightning bolt, riot act, vs, binaural, vitalogy, yield, no code, ten. No Code is actually my favourite album, but you can't deny Ten. And also, not always into the closing track of No Code.
My favorites are Ten, Vs, Vitalogy and No Code. Can't rank these four as I love them all the same way for different reasons. Yield was still good. After that they lost me..
I’ll preface this by saying I only got 3 minutes into this before skipping to the end. But, it’s the perfect example of how all art is subjective. Fans will always argue over the ‘best’ or ‘worst’ albums of their favourite artists, but worst of all for me is where fans think a band should put out clone after clone of their debut album, as if evolving and learning as a band is somehow a bad thing. Sure, Ten is a great album, but I wouldn’t be listening to PJ right now if every album since had been Ten reheated. For me they’ve grown. I know my tastes have changed in the last 30 years - how can we expect the band members’ tastes not to have?. Their evolution as song writers is apparent. Again, my opinion is no more or less valid than the OP’s here, but let us all be thankful they are still here and, for me, at the top of their game.
Pearl Jam to me...is a tough one. Grew up loving them. Ten, Vs, Vitalogy, No Code, Yield, Bineral, Some of Riot Act. But the older I got the harder it was to enjoy their music I guess. Unlike the Pumpkins, sTp, or Alice in Chains or alot of the other bands from that era the older I got the more they just didn't hold up as much for me. Just a personal opinion. I know people love them
Finally someone who agress on how uninspired, incoherent, the avocado album was ! The fact that this album is the only one with no title says a lot : there's no global scheme to it, no athmosphere. I never go back to it, and I'm a PJ fan ;)
I do like every album, but I do love some albums more than others… 12) Gigaton (4/10) 11) Pearl Jam (4.5/10) 10) Dark Matter (6/10) 9) Backspacer (6/10) 8) Riot Act (6.5/10) 7) Lightning Bolt (7/10) 6) V.S (8/10) 5) Vitalogy (8.5/10) 4) No Code (9/10) 3) Binaural (9/10) 2) Yield (9/10) 1) Ten (10/10) I do feel a bit mixed on your list, but I’m glad that you like Binaural. Not a record that I hear getting a lot of love.
I have been a Pearl Jam fan since 1991. I only agree with you on Dark Matter. I think you are too mainstream to appreciate their best work. The band’s best album is Vitalogy. Talk about experimental! You didn’t mention Whipping or Tremor Christ. Are those the “filler songs” you mentioned? That’s nuts. I would put Ten second and Vs. third. You didn’t get No Code? So many great songs you didn’t mention. What about Present Tense and In My Tree? I mean, holy shit. I would rank it fourth. And again you put down Riot Act. You don’t even mention All or None - which is my personal favorite Pearl Jam song. I would rank it fifth. I would rank Yeild sixth and then Binaural seventh. Backspacer, Avacado, Gigaton, Lightening Bolt and Dark Matter represent a band in utter decline. They can be ranked at the bottom in any order.
It's sad to see that Pearl Jam no longer writes songs with heavy guitar riffs. In the last past years the band made most of your rock tunes was reduced to generic punk rock. We went from complex and sticky guitar riffs like Even Flow, Once, Animal, Go etc to simple 3-chords-punk rock like God's Dice, Mind Your Manners, Superblood and Running. The complex riffs they used to play was musically superior to the 3-chords-punk rock they've been performing currently. With Stone's participation in the composition of the melodic parts decreasing from the third album onwards, the musical structure changed. Mainly due to Eddie's greater participation in melodic composing and playing guitar. Eddie brought a way of playing guitar closer to The Who and punk bands in the form of simple and fast 3-chords-punk. I particularly don't like this style, I prefer the heavy riffs of arena rock or hard rock, as they are aesthetically more beautiful and complex. I also miss the bluesy tones and harmonic pointing of Mike's guitar. And yes, I don't deny that there are good songs made in last years but I miss a sound from the early years that was more influenced by classic bands from the 70s, as I think they are technically and aesthetically superior. The last 4 albums together do not form a better repertoire than any of the first 3 albums individually. 1. TEN 2. VS 3. VITALOGY 4. YIELD 5. NO CODE 6. AVOCADO 7. RIOT ACT 8. BINAURAL 9. BACKSPACER 10. LIGHTNING BOLT 11. DARK MATTER 12. GIGATON
Here’s mine: 12. BackSpacer 11. Riot Act 10. Lightning Bolt 9. Gigaton 8. Pearl Jam 7. Dark Matter 6. Binaural 5. No Code 4. Vitalogy 3. Yield 2. Vs. 1. Ten (obviously) The newer albums from the 2000 decade onwards while not bad have mostly not been my cup of tea. Binaural and Lightning Bolt are good but everything thing else ranges from ok to just stuff I don’t come back to that often. Saying that though, it’ll never take away my love and appreciation for this band. Their stuff from the 90s are some of the best music I’ve seen from any band. Good list! EDIT: Bit of an update here, I listened to all PJ’s discography leading up to a concert I’m going to in about a week and updated my ranking. Dark Matter has actually grown on me a lot since writing this. Theres a couple songs I still don’t think are great but overall I think it’s a huge step up compared to their more recent output but I respect your opinion on it. But still, nothings topping those first 6 albums for me. Also one thing I forgot to mention in my previous statement, I’m really happy you love Yield as much as I do! I thought I was the only one who preferred it to Vitalogy.
Nice list, though No Code is way way way too low. Jack Irons’ work on that record is incredible. I might alone in being meh on Ten. Fine debut, but way overplayed and not nearly as good or interesting as the next four albums.
This list barely makes sense to me. No Code at #8? I'm not finished with the video as I write this but I'm going to put my money down that your #1 is "Ten".
Ten is not their best album IMO. I think Vitalogy, Vs, and Yield are better. No Code probably falls one behind Ten. So, for me, Ten is their 4th best album. And you really can't mention "Vitalogy" without stating the greatness of " Corduroy"
I TOTALLY disagree with you this time! I really love Dark Matter. I think the songs will be amazing live! And about Matt Cameron's drums, people always complain about him. Nobody talks about the great job he did in Riot Act. Live, he will be awesome as always. Vs, to me, is #1, followed by Ten, Vitalogy, No Code, Yield and Dark Matter tied with Binaural.
Clicked off as soon as I saw Dark Matter at last. Seriously? Riot Act is a shitty album. Binaural and a Gigaton are meh. Every other PJ album is good and Dark Matter was definitely better than Lightning Bolt. Horrible ranking. No newbie should refer to this as their PJ discovery guide.
Dude you need to give the album some more listens. This is a phenomenal album. The best they have done since Vitalogy. The over compression is only apparent on some of the songs. The Avocado album is also one of their best.
So, acording with this guy the latest album of PJ it's a piece of shit compress in a vinil record shape ???? Really ???? I haven't hear it, but I just realize that PJ it's fucking dead 😢
I'm not a big PJ fan but I love this great debut! By far the best album they've ever released! And as I have said in previous videos on your channel, I appreciated Vedder's talent even more and a serious reason was the wonderful "Into the Wild"!!!
the avocado album is fucking great. my favorite PJ album is No Code
No Code hasn't been understood yet.
Interesting. I dig No Code from the first note to the last the very first time I heard it, and... I enjoy listening to it from beginning to end like we used to do with the Beatles, Pink Floyd, Jethro Tull, etc...

As a Pearl Jam fan you got to agree that Wreckage is a GREAT song!❤
I will never understand the hate for Riot Act
No kidding. Such a good and underrated album. Binaural is kinda underrated too, but doesn't get as much hate
My favorites are Ten, Vs, Vitalogy and No Code. Can't rank these four as I love them all the same way for different reasons. Yield was still good. After that they lost me..
DM: Agreed with the compression issues. But it seams they wanted it to sound that way. But the songs are Great.

Just breathe is their greatest ballad? How old are you?

Great list yourself! Yeah, PJ can put out anything and I'll listen... but I agree, nothing truly great since the 90's
@@JOHNNYRADIOyou put the nail on the head with this statement, even if I liked Dark Matter a lot more than before
Nice list, though No Code is way way way too low. Jack Irons’ work on that record is incredible. I might alone in being meh on Ten. Fine debut, but way overplayed and not nearly as good or interesting as the next four albums.
100% agree.
This list barely makes sense to me. No Code at #8?
I'm not finished with the video as I write this but I'm going to put my money down that your #1 is "Ten".
Yup. As I thought.
No Code was way better than 8. You struck out on that one.
Ten is not their best album IMO. I think Vitalogy, Vs, and Yield are better. No Code probably falls one behind Ten. So, for me, Ten is their 4th best album.
And you really can't mention "Vitalogy" without stating the greatness of " Corduroy"
Finally! Someone who doesn't think Ten is the be all end all of PJ.
VS and Yield definetly top it. Not as sold on Vitalogy, though.
I love Matt's drumming... just wish they were better produced. Can't blame you for having Vs 1st... such a solid album!
Hearing a good number of Dark Matter live in concert I thought all of the new songs were beautiful especially Wreckage
I disagree with this, being listening pj from 93 and no code as to be on top 3 and binaural ad to be in top 5.

Lol, I wouldn't say PJ is dead... like I said, I really enjoyed Gigaton... here's hoping Brendan O'Brien comes back as producer next time!
You’re wrong - DM is 4th best
They are all bad.
