@Prolite The intro's nearly as long as the lesson but you know what? That was the best intro in all of UA-cam. If only others took the time and effort to make awesome intros like yours then I'd be a happy guy.
Just wanted to say this is one of the best how to videos I've seen for Hockey stop, I tried them last night after watching this video and sure enough it worked! Thanks again :)
Half the viewers have left before the tutorial has even started! Get rid of a minutes worth. And not even watched the ending. Apart from that, the actual tutorial is very useful. Thanks
Mr. Prolite- A deep thank you for this vid. I will be showing it to my daughter who is just learning how to skate. Where was this in the 1980s when I was learning? My first high speed 'test stop' ended with me lying on the ice, staring at the clear night sky in -10 temp until I could ignore the agony of popping my knee 'sideways', and crawled back into the house with my mother asking the usual now what.... my daughter will understand this vid easily so thanks again...
This video will defenitely help me. I just moved up north and took it upon myself to learn hockey -this evening was my first time on ice and stopping on rollerblades and stopping on ice are completely unrelated!
Ive been working on breakin on ice but i cant seem to learn how,but by watching this video i now know wat i should work on.Thanks for this nice tutorial :)
This video helped alot. At first while trying it i keep doing a sharp turn, which I wanted to learn too, so that was good. Then I keep trying and i got it. So I now no how to turn sharpley and stop pretty fast thanks.
@Prolite Completely agree with you my friend!! 80s most definitely all the way!! Thank you very much for all the lessons you've put up. I sincerely hope your extreme ice skating thing takes off. It would be cool if you can come to Dubai at some stage and show us a move or two. I'm still learning but some of my Emirati friends have got something called "The Emirati Dance". It's awesome.
Hey, I think it's real cool that you post videos trying to help people out with this stuff. Great job man. Any chance you have, or can do a vid on the heel dime stop? (hockey-stopping on your inside edge, while the other skate is perpendicular to the stopping skate?
In order to stop correctly you must use both your inside and outside edges at the same time. Your leading foot should be utilizing the inside edge while the trailing foot should utilize the outside edge. The best way to learn to stop is by starting with the simple "make ice" drill, as shown in the video then move on to gliding and stopping on the inside edge. Once you stop using just your leading leg then move on to single-leg stops on the inside then outside edges.
For most people learning to skate, thinking about "edges" and their uses is too complicated. The best way for beginners to learn to stop is to FEEL simple movements on the ice. They have to feel movements and develop those mechanical feelings into simple skills.
I am learning backwards crossovers, and hockey stops, and understanding the edges is crucial. I'm also finding that how I distribute weight along the skate edge is very important. I cannot speak for others, but breaking it down into the basic mechanics is key, along with many hours of practice.
The guy obviously was enjoying playing with his video editing software. You're not forced to watch the intro, there's a slider beneath the video, not sure how familiar you are with online video content, but usually you can slide this to watch/skip any part of the video you wish to :)
@Prolite yes ..figure skates. The top is with some dents ..(i think thats how they are called) ..and the back is longer. I usually get stuck in the dents while doing this ...so my only way to stop is to put one foot backawrds in a T position and brake slowly. Or to transform the straight movement into one of rotation.
ok, here in Montreal we can no longer use the outside rinks and it is only the first day of March... damn global warming !!! Thanks man, hope to see more stuff from you in the future... it's REALLY GOOD stuff...
I think I can pretty much do this stop. I stopped like this and I thought I was doing it wrongly because i see people leaning on two skates to stop. I can do this stop also on roller blades. What I really want to learn is the 2 foot stop. Do you jump a little bit then slide to hover the ice a little bit with 2 foot stop? That would be sweet if you had 2 foot stop vid?
this is diferent then what i have been practicing. i can do a tstop without lifting my back leg so i can stop. but having trouble lifting my front leg up cause my momentom rocks me forward into the ice. anywho ill give this stop a go and once i got it masted ill be better then my sis. lol thx for the vid mate :D
does the skate need to be sharpened with a radius to do this kind of stop? i just have a basic 1/2" hollow but but no radius (i was told this was a good begining cut).
Where do you skate at? im tryna learn how to stop on my left foot. Got the right foot down but when i do this i find myself not sliding as tho i would right footed. its more of a struggle to slide then it should be.
hey hows it going, i am just starting out i can stop on my right foot but not with my other is there another way i can learn to get strong with my left ( by the way im from australia )
I could never learn how to stop. I did it once while I was messing around on the ice and I was amazed that I did it, but I could never do it again. The way I stop is I guess the figure skating way where you slide your back foot perpendicular to your other foot.
Great ! but i am facing the same problem as most of others, when i try to stop i kinda spin over my self ! is sharpening the blades too much might make it too sharp so it will stuck on the ice instead of sliding then stopping ?! ** cuz i've sharpened the blades like twice over the last week ** ! thanx
I have problems doing this on artistic ice skates. I don't know why. When i had the usual skates it was no problem. How should i do it for artistic ones?
hey prolite i have the same problem as yameanson i can stop left just not right its like my muscles wont work wen i try to stop right can you give me tips?
@Prolite It was the best TV show of its day. That and Columbo.. Oh and The A-Team aaannndd... MacGyver... Oh and Airwolf... Manimal, and Dallas... Maaannn, they just don't make shows like they used to. 80s was the best decade!!
also make sure you are stopping with the balls of your feet, not your heels. if your weight is on your heels, the skate will dig in, but if you're almost on your toes , you will slide ...

LOL ur vids are great. i am working on hawk turn right now and a T-stop. Cant wait to get back out onto the ice!
I started the tutorial but by the end of the intro was too old to skate anyway!
Alexis Lavigne I'm getting too old for these comments. I think I need a drink.
@Prolite You know the ending is super cool as well! Properly awesome!! Thanks for that.
I like the graphics that show where your weight distribution should be!! V. effective!
Great Video. So glad I found it again. It helped me teach my kids and wife to skate.
This video helped alot. At first while trying it i keep doing a sharp turn, which I wanted to learn too, so that was good. Then I keep trying and i got it. So I now no how to turn sharpley and stop pretty fast thanks.
Video starts @ 1:25
Thanks for the tutorial!
This vid helped me alot, others showing how to stop are more like showing off. And + for vid editing.
@Prolite Completely agree with you my friend!! 80s most definitely all the way!!

THANK YOU!! this really helped a lot!! 5/5
can you show a video on how to stop while skating backwards?
Yeah, nice touch! A Kit-style tutorial! :)
this is diferent then what i have been practicing. i can do a tstop without lifting my back leg so i can stop. but having trouble lifting my front leg up cause my momentom rocks me forward into the ice. anywho ill give this stop a go and once i got it masted ill be better then my sis. lol thx for the vid mate :D
From it looks like to me, that you're using the same skates like me, but i'm not sure :)
Great & useful video, thanks!
thanks a lot man
i'm gonna try it
ROLLER BLADING HELPS A LOT!!!
i heard the transition is not all that bad thank you rocket power!
Nice video thanks for sharing.
Pretty cool videos prolite! I just uploaded two how to hockey stop videos to my channel, let me know what you think.
thanx...i just started hockey this year...i can almost stop well now, but i seem to turn a bit inwards when i stop, what should i do?
Question, is it also possible to break like that on non-icehockey skates, but just the sport skates?
does the skate need to be sharpened with a radius to do this kind of stop? i just have a basic 1/2" hollow but but no radius (i was told this was a good begining cut).
Where do you skate at? im tryna learn how to stop on my left foot. Got the right foot down but when i do this i find myself not sliding as tho i would right footed. its more of a struggle to slide then it should be.
Hey dude, I got some Nike Bauer Reflex skates, I was wondering how often I should sharpen blade?
hey hows it going,
i am just starting out i can stop on my right foot but not with my other is there another way i can learn to get strong with my left ( by the way im from australia )
I could never learn how to stop. I did it once while I was messing around on the ice and I was amazed that I did it, but I could never do it again. The way I stop is I guess the figure skating way where you slide your back foot perpendicular to your other foot.
I'm trying to switch from inline to ice, and I always end up doing the turn-like-stops you were talking about.
that intro tho
Great ! but i am facing the same problem as most of others, when i try to stop i kinda spin over my self ! is sharpening the blades too much might make it too sharp so it will stuck on the ice instead of sliding then stopping ?! ** cuz i've sharpened the blades like twice over the last week ** ! thanx
nice vid it should help i hav my ferst hockey practice in 4 days
very helpful.." don't give up" ..i won't !
thanks a lot
I have problems doing this on artistic ice skates. I don't know why. When i had the usual skates it was no problem. How should i do it for artistic ones?
Good video. I could do without the first 1:30 of it though... wtf was that drawn out introduction for?
hey prolite i have the same problem as yameanson i can stop left just not right its like my muscles wont work wen i try to stop right can you give me tips?
@Prolite It was the best TV show of its day. That and Columbo.. Oh and The A-Team aaannndd... MacGyver... Oh and Airwolf... Manimal, and Dallas... Maaannn, they just don't make shows like they used to. 80s was the best decade!!
This is the same as the one footed stop?
Thanks!
this had a 0:50+ second intro and then you began it with nightrider
how do u do the two legged stop?
THANK YOU
Thx dude
also make sure you are stopping with the balls of your feet, not your heels. if your weight is on your heels, the skate will dig in, but if you're almost on your toes , you will slide ...
like i do not completley stop when i try, i kind of spin sideways
when i try stoping like that, i spin! what do i do?
k thanx...i have practice 2moro, ill try it out
Why did the intro take half the video?
@Prolite No, thank youuuuuuuuuuuu!
ROFLING at the intro.. :')
Do u play ice hockey??
the guy at skate shop told me 6-8 times use. I am not quit sure.
very helpful! but i think the intro was too long
@Prolite I do;)
I learnt like most by trying and failing and occasionally falling
tanks..i can stop now
feels like watching a sci-fi!
thumbs up for "KIT" - the car that drives itself and talks to you too.
super
hi Dan
Im an extreme ice skater in Bahrain :)

god i need to know how to stop before intramural hockey season.....fuck
I'm going to do a freaking split!
i cant slide on ice like that, my skates just stick in the ice =\, i can do 2foot stop lol
Crimminy- skip to 1:30
I dislike your video, the intro is too long, please do learn again editing video, but this video is useful thanks
the edits / intro were pretty annoying , ace tutorial though xD
intense music! lol
dear God... the intro is 1:30. it's not as cool as u think it is.
Only applies to hockey skates!! And that intro is ridiculously long. Just show me already!!
hahaha cool,by the way you'll love hockey
you have seriously got to be kidding me haw do you not know how to do this
4 min video 3 min intro
I could've done without that ridiculous minute-long intro. After that, it was informative
well i would maybe try that if it didnt make me look like a retarded ninja
Sandy ravage?
any need for the massively long intro??...shit!
