very well done! one question though.... are the diameters of all these pins (OEM and universal) the same? Are they the same in both North America AND Europe? Are they all brass or are there Nickel Silver bottom pins available? The devil is in the details! Thanks anyone for your comments!
you kind of danced around it with the kwikset demo, but i was waiting for you to mention that the maximum discrepancy for the .003 set is .001", while it is .002" for the .005" kit. example: say a 003 kit has an 080 and a 083. if you need 080, right on, 081, a 080 is off by 001, a 082, the 083 is of by 001, and a 083 your right on. =001 max deviation in contrast to , say an 080 and 085, where a 082 and 083 would both be off by .002" with a 080 and 085 respectively.
Get a load of this.I once worked at a lock shop, and sometimes the pins from the kit(Which was very old and therefore likely used .005 increments)were so off(i.e. too low), that they’d actually replace the drivers with bottom pins(Point facing down)in the respective chambers so as to compensate for the difference and allow the key to function!
Personally, I prefer to have brand specific pinning kits as much as possible, and really like the SPI kits you sell. Also not a fan of color coded pins. Yes, it makes it easier to ID what pin is what just on color, like, as you mentioned, if you dropped a pin into an adjacent bin by accident, but, and I know this is a bit of a stretch, someone with a little knowledge, time (a few minutes), light, paperclip and a good eye could POSSIBLY decode the bitting by looking at the colors of the pins. I didn't try too hard and was able to make out several colors through the keyway.
I feel like I'm getting a free education on locksmithing with every video I watch. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
Thank you-PJ
Thanks for this video.... u answered a lot of questions

Thank you for this. I’ve been seeing both versions offered for sale, but never any explanation of the difference.
Glad you liked it! -PJ
ah yes, the most common locksmith argument besides which lubricant to use. the simple answer is: use what your boss pays for :)
You got a point!
That's right Moss Man!
Chensky likes the .005 for some reason.

Yes! .003 is the way to go 100% of the time in my opinion. -PJ
Good information would like a chart showing the differences of the other lock pin as you showed for Kwikset. #lockboss
