I got exposed to TB at work last summer and only found out because the patient tested positive at a sister hospital and pretty much anyone working in the ED the night they came in had to get tested multiple times
Antibiotic resistant TB is a major issue. 3rd world ppl start the multidrug treatments and 'feel better' after the first few drug courses and then stop coming in. Still sick and with encysted active TB. TB that is mutated and now resistant to the first few courses of the treatment.
Well, they would say that... can't get the plebs to accept a Pandemic Treaty if people aren't scared shitless of getting whatever the latest disease is. The same organisation that bolloxed up Covid, and now is predicting a quarter million deaths per year from "Climate Change" up to 2050.... We're living in 🤡 🌍 EDIT: TB is real, btw. I just wouldn't believe any statistics published by an organisation run by a known terrorist, and funded by the US gov, the CCP and Billy Boy Gates
My sister lives in Tucson, AZ. She contracted tuberculosis 35 years ago. They now treat it with antibiotics. Recently, the Pierce County sheriff's office ( Washington state)had to arrest and jail a woman who was ordered by the court to get treated for TB but refused to do it. TB is not eradicated by a long shot.
Here in Australia you can’t refuse treatment if you have active TB. Obviously they will try every available option first, but if you continue to refuse and also refuse to follow infection control instructions (wearing a mask, avoiding contact with others) then you will be forcibly isolated until you are no longer infectious (so basically treatment or death, unless it’s a rare case of becoming latent again). And we’ve had these laws for ages. It’s why I was kind of confused about people making a big deal about some of the COVID restrictions. Most of them already existed for TB.
The problem is its hard to totally eradicate on account of the fact most people carrying it will never develope symptoms and transmission requires pretty prolonged close exposure to an infected symptomatic person
The editing in this is hilarious! I love that whenever he's reading the story, the song gets dark, boomy, brooding.... then he starts a tangent. As soon as he does, I can just feel the music stop, turn around with an annoyed expression, put its hands on its hips, and wait for Simon to get his ass back to work. I just love the tension being broken like that.

Man on the subject of jury trials and impartiality- every time this comes up I’m reminded of the woman my dad served on a jury with who refused to do any deliberation because “the police wouldn’t have arrested him if he wasn’t guilty”
@@amberkat8147 there's supposed to be a process for this but it's instead perverted to encourage the selection of the most impressionable people. The judicial system is designed to give your case fair representation that way, but unfortunately, a fair representation doesn't mean accurately determining whether you actually broke the law- just means that the people you have to convince are just as gullible either way.
@@amberkat8147the system has a vested interest in keeping people like that on juries. Unfortunately many prosecutors care more about winning than due process .
Awesome episode today. I love it when Simon has more than enough reasons to remind me that " THE PAST WAS THE WORST!". It's actually really healthy to remind me of that as I get damn nostalgic for 'simple living' or "Damn, I wish I lived in a cabin in the woods." etc. The past was the worst. Don't you forget it.
Would be nice if we could somehow have both simple living AND nice medical care. Honestly, if there's one aspect of life we could truly benefit from not keeping simple, it would be medical care.
Got to love how even if you weren't listening to the actual words, you'd be able to tell when he drops into a tangent. His entire demeanor and the timber of his voice completely changes. Goes along with what another poster said about how the music will change as well. I love it
I’m a lawyer and agree about juries for the most part. I tried a case with a former judge. He said when he was a judge his office was next to the jury room and he could sometimes here the deliberations. He said the stuff the jury would consider scared him.
My sister has OCD too mixed with ADHD and apparently it's very common for them to go hand in hand. She is ALL OVER the place all the time. Constant tangents
I don't want to say I have OCD if I don't know I do but I've definitely also had compulsive moments where my ADHD won't let me walk away from something until I correct it because I'm *super* focused on it. I used to have people at work fed up because I was so attentive to details on every single product I touched. It can be tough because I know there'll be other shit to get done but I gravitate towards what I get a kick out of straightening up/completing. But I'd say that even if I do have OCD, it's an acute case that mostly ramps up when I've taken a little too much Adderall
Hi Simon, I also have OCD and as I'm sure you're aware it can be crippling at times. Thank you for just mentioning it, even in passing. Seeing successful people talk about struggling with the same thing I do really gives me hope on the days when I need it.
@@lisabeloved I know it is a joke however I will add I really do think Simon has ADHD with his tangents that are unrelated and related and going on for minutes at a time as a diagnose ADHD person I really relate to him at times. however lol I liked the joke.
@@jonathancunningham8739 oh I am in agreement with you, I truly think he's Adhd/nerodivergent! My intended implication with the joke is that those of us with adhd brains can easily recognize a fellow adhd brain at work 😂👉🧠 There's a meme I think about all the time that goes something like: "adhd/nerodivergent folks tend to run in packs, like emotionally disregulated wolves. So if all your friends have adhd, I have news for you" 😆
I watched a few people do honest reviews of it, and they've said it tastes fine. The real problems are the price (you can get everything that goes into it combined for much cheaper) and just... the quantity of stuff in it (it gives way too much of the different nutrients).
And I WAS yelling "tuberculosis!" at my phone, "consumption is tuberculosis!" I like it when you google things you are unsure about, instead of just sitting in your wrong ideas 😂 Check mate, amulets!
@@TheCerebralMirageit’s number 2 from what I just looked up. It’s curable now and tuberculosis is rather rare in the United States. I’m not sure about Europe. The reason it’s so rare in the United States was a very aggressive campaign to prevent it. Vaccinations for TB was a large component. It’s passed from person to person via coughs and sneezes.
Yes it’s awful. Typhus is also still with us too. As far as I know smallpox is still the only disease that we have eradicated. Except for samples for “research”: one in the USA’s CDC, and I REALLY hope I’m wrong but the Soviet government had a sample too I think… Which would mean that Russia may have live smallpox virus. Please, please someone tell me I’m wrong about this, I want to sleep tonight.
As Simon was describing the insurance fraud firebombing scheme an ad popped up for "manifesting abundance" and the first line in the ad was "are you having trouble manifesting abundance and wealth? Then you can try these strategies to help you manifest abundance faster" and I laughed my arse off at that transition.
Lmao. The scheme reminds me of the stories my dad told us about growing up during the "burning down Bronx" Era, where people were running that insurance scheme. He used to scavenge whatever products were in decent shape from the burned down stores and sell them around his neighborhood.
I feel like every other Cas Crim I watch, there's a well timed ad(or poorly, depending on if you're me or the sponsor). Simon will have said something not so good and then boom... Ad break with an initial statement that is laughably fitting with the previous statement
@@williebauld1007asking the real questions. I think simon meant that he isn't looking like Steve Harvey in his content, and probably even less so in real life
I have now officially watched every single episode of the Casual criminalist and I will be keeping up with it in the foreseeable future. Kudos to Simon, the writers and editors for bringing this engaging show to life!
Thank you for talking about your OCD. I was diagnosed after filling out the forms to screen my son for it and realizing that was exactly how my own brain functions. It’s incredibly hard to cope with but being able to recognize that my brain is glitching is super helpful.
People still drop like flies due to TB and Typhoid fever in various and numerous African countries. And yes, it's usually the extremely poor and rural areas that get affected. And because the people that usually contract TB cannot stick to the medical regime necessary to treat it, drug resistant TB flared up.
TB has been a problem in Alaska for decades. Also, TB outbreaks have been springing up all over the world in the US, Europe etc., along with diseases like measles, scarlet fever, and well many more.
This is one of my favorite episodes so far. We have Emma, Liam, Sam, Simon's legendary tangents and a bit more insight into our favorite Fact Boi, all in service of bringing us a fascinating case. Btw, like several other commenters, I also struggle with OCD and I can't tell you how validating and comforting it can be to hear someone empathize with the struggle of living with ut while also saying it doesn't mean thay someone who has it is dumb. I'm really interested in finding out more about Mr. Alexander and what other cases he worked on. Thank you to everyone who works so hard to tell us these stories.

After working in the court system here in the US for over 15 years, if I was charged with a crime and was innocent, I would definitely go with a trial before a judge. If I was guilty, I would go for a jury trial. Juries are totally unpredictable and often decide cases via their gut regardless of the court’s instructions and the elements of the crime.

Yeah tuberculosis is still quite a problem and becoming worse due to antibacterial resistance mixed with various conspiracy theory groups helping reduce public cooperation with health guidelines for those with TB.
As someone with multiple anxiety disorders, thank you so much for mentioning your OCD. While I never expect to know about UA-cam legends’ personal lives, I do think that normalising discourse around the varieties of ways our brains act truly helps more people to consider going to a Dr. (Especially men, due to the inherent baggage we have culturally about men seeking treatment. So, yeah - I came for the murder, but was refreshed to hear a simple, frank comment about something not discussed nearly enough!

16:07 An osteopath is a licensed doctor who went to medical school just like an MD. They even go to the same schools as MDs do. They just take slightly different classes and different boards because while MDs focus on treating illnesses and injuries D.O.s (doctors of osteopathic medicine) focus on a whole body approach like proper diet, exercise and preventitive screening.
I don’t think you mentioned ocd before. I would have remembered because I have contamination ocd that has made me housebound twice and caused hospital stays for malnutrition. It’s nice to see you(and others) successful and happy despite the ocd because you’re right it’s horrific to have and so exhausting.
Regarding the tailor discussion, you can certainly measure yourself, but unless you know what you’re doing it can be inaccurate. The reason being is a) by default your limbs are stiff if you’re trying to wrap measuring tape around yourself (you want to be relaxed while measuring because being restricting your muscles can change overall measurements) and b) that part of the body may not be straightened out while you’re curling around trying to check the tape. As someone who’s sewn costumes for 18 years, for myself and others, I have learned how to compensate for that to get an almost accurate read. Even so, I’d choose to have someone else measure me if I had the option, even if I have to explain to them how to measure.
Agreed. I'm not a seamstress by any means, but even something as simple as hemming my own pants and skirts (I am super short) is almost impossible to measure while wearing because you have to BEND OVER to place or move any pin. It's more accurate to just guesstimate at that point, but it really is best to have someone help you with the measuring. I'd hate to try to measure my own inseam, thigh measurement; even back length would be a pain because I'd have to have one arm up and probably have my back slightly curved by that.
I sat on a jury and there were 2 (out of the 12) that took notes, myself included. When it came to deliberations we were able to correct all of the false memories of the the other jurors and the person was convicted 12-0 after an initial 8-4 split. We used facts and notes to persuade people. On the next case, the jury found not guilty 10-2. The initial vote was 7-5 not guilty. I was in the 2 sticking to guilty because the person was guilty and the person was re-arrested after acquittal for the same type of crime. The jury was swayed by a loudmouth cabbie (taxi driver) who hadn't even listened to the case and I would say that the 3 who switched their vote were hectored by the cabbie was saying things like "we'll be here ages if you don't switch your vote" and "just think of the cost of re-trying (the defendant)".
Dear Simon, will you be covering the crimes of *Team Rocket* I know they are the “bad guys” but I don’t understand what they actually did, other than get in Ash’s way from time to time.
So, if you go by the games, and depending upon how intelligent pokémon are: *Theft* (This is a given - pokéballs are property, and the taking of pokémon from trainers involves the stealing of the pokéballs. However, if pokémon legally count as animals rather than people, then the pokémon of trainers would count as pets, and taking of pets would be theft. There are also instances of Team Rocket taking specific, non-animate items without their owner's consent, which is, again, theft.) *Kidnapping* (This is the one that applies if pokémon count as people. I think that this is dubious at best, otherwise trainers catching pokémon could be treated as a crime. However, Team Rocket does take Mr. Fuji hostage during their Cubone skull theft plot in Lavender Town and takes the majority of the employees of Silph Co. hostage, both of which are classed as kidnapping, as well as kidnapping the station manager of the radio tower in Goldenrod City.) *Breaking and Entering* and *Burglary* (In R/B/Y and FR/LG, one of the houses in Cerulean City has been burglarized by Team Rocket. In G/S/C and HG/SS, one of the owners of the same house references the event.) *Illegal Mining* (Team Rocket intends to sell fossils it mines from Mount Moon. This might not be illegal, though - fossil hunters are known to mine there, apparently without risking prosecution. However, there may be an analogue in real-world foraging laws - in the UK, it's illegal to harvest wild mushrooms from the New Forest for commercial purposes, but legal to do so for personal culinary use. If a similar law exists in the Kanto region, that might criminalise Team Rocket's Mount Moon mining operation.) *Gross Negligence while engaged in Inherently Dangerous Activity* (This one's a weird, and slightly dubious, one. Team Rocket's activities during the events of G/S/C and HG/SS involve the use of a machine that brainwashes pokémon and induces evolution in the Magikarp in the Lake of Rage, near Mahogany Town, in order to capture and sell the resulting Gyarados. Given the notoriously aggressive nature of Gyarados and Team Rocket's clear understanding that the machine would induce evolution, Team Rocket would be liable for any injuries resulting from this.) *Cruelty to Animals* (Team Rocket's experimentation on pokémon is noted to be cruel, focusing on extracting profit and/or deriving means to seize political power.) *Domestic Terrorism* (This one should be obvious.) *Criminal Harassment* (Only one Grunt, in HG/SS, carried out against a Kimono Girl. Probably not a crime that can actually be laid at the feet of the organisation, instead levelled at the Grunt in question.) *Operation of an Unlicensed Casino* (This is heavily dependent upon whether there's actually a law in place - some jurisdictions outright ban the operation of gambling shops and casinos, others license them. If Kanto's legal system is based on Japanese law, the Game Corner would be entirely illegal - in keeping with its being run by Team Rocket.) *Poaching* (This one's another dubious one. Team Rocket isn't above capturing massive numbers of wild pokémon for sale, including rare or even unique specimens. However, there's no evidence of a law against capturing pokémon, even en masse, so this is on distinctly shaky ground, legally-speaking.) *Racketeering* (Team Rocket is a criminal organisation that reportedly turns a profit - in part by running the Game Corner, but in part by extortion, sale of stolen pokémon and theft.) Quite the list.
@@malcolmdarke5299 That's intense. But then why are they not just arrested and put in jail. Like corrupt officers can turn a blind eye until Domestic Terrorism. Surely the government would step in at the Unlicensed Casino stage, Even if we're not under Japanese law (which I imagine we would be, very good point) there would at least be taxes to pay on profit made, unaccounted for if its unlicensed. But I guess that swings both ways if it's unlicensed maybe they don't know about it. Thank you for your response, I am infinitely pleased with how thorough this was. I didn't expect anyone to see my comment, let alone actually answer it. Can you imagine how glorious it would be to have Simon narrate the goings on, and wrong doings of Team Rocket. I assume he'd be on the ipad trying to figure out what the hell he's reading, very, very quickly. lol. Thank you again, and have a good day.
Simon, I haven't seen all of your videos across all of your channels, but I have seen a lot of them and this is the first time I remember you mentioning that you have OCD. I think it's good that you're willing to talk about it. People with OCD and similar disorders tend to "beat themselves up," so to speak, over being weird, and it's good to know that someone else out there is dealing with the same thing... and is quite successful in life despite it.
Unfortunately, I have OCD. I suffer from some of the worst compulsions. Thievery, sex, monetary untrustworthiness, and lying for no reasons. I do these things without thinking or out of thinking too much. It doesn't go away until you do the action and then you realize that you didn't really want that all along and now you are in trouble in your personal, lawful, and monetary situations in life. It's hell and almost impossible to deal with at times. I have medication and two doctors and therapy and it's a fight every single day. Unfortunately, on the days when it's not a fight, I've already lost and just haven't realized that the world has me by the nuts yet. #mentaldisaster #alreadylost
Also can we do an episode on barney curley, had a crazy life as a criminal, rigging races and frauding bookies and had many things happen throughout his life, he changed his ways and created a charity that is still in use today, a proper gentleman criminal and with no violence I'm sure it would be a blessing on simons mental health
I cant believe there isnt a movie about this yet! I mean this case has it all: the conman, the femme fatale, the evil stepmother, the family drama, the hero who tries to save the day only to be wrongly convicted, the heros lover being shot by a stray bullet. Hell, people will probably be like "this story is so over the top and unrealistic" only to be hit by "based on a true story" once the credits roll
Regarding the Secret Service, I think Simon missed that they were partially responsible for investigating the crimes. As for the fun fact of being created under Lincoln, Lincoln signed the legislation for their creation just hours before he was shot.
Why is it my life revolves around Simons uploads. I wait so impatiently to see another video. Simon im subbed to 4 of your channels. Keep this shit up! I love it.
Have to limit myself to Casual Crim, Decoding, Brain Blaze and occasional Warographics, Side Projects and Today I Found It if they're really history focused. Although if Warographics went back to covering pre-1900s wars again, I would be all over that.

I’ve read that approximately 60% of people with ocd also have ADHD. I don’t know if Simon’s has ADHD officially as well but it explains a lot. Also that number does change from paper to paper, study to study etc.
I’m old but not old old & I’ve nursed people with TB in Australia. Back in the 1990s we had a young man with it in a special room with reverse air pressure. Totally isolated, barrier nursed, the whole shebang. His girlfriend decided he was lonely so she went into the room & started pushing him before we could stop her. On the plus side, we could keep them in the same room until they were both cleared to return to a normal ward.
Theres a case of a woman in either the 1800 or 1900 who owned a bar. She signed drunks/homeless people up for life insurance. Shed wait a while then get them drunk and kill them in ways that look like accidents. Then shed blame the accident in the clumbsy alcoholics and colkect the ins money. She did it so often and brazenly she ended up getting caught and hanged.
7:21 Simon, yes, nobody reasonably has 40k in cash these days for a down payment. But you missed the critical point: this guy bought *the entire house straight up* for 40k ($ today). Housing is so far gone in the modern day, what this guy did long ago would cover *less than 10%* of what he would need today, and he too would be stuck renting, amulets and all. This market has never been in more dire need of regulation
Simon not knowing words is hilarious to me, and I'm so sorry for that. Or basic things like typhoid vaccine being a thing, so typhoid isn't extinct... Some things I find out Simon doesn't know are indicators of how good some people's life is. Like not living around plague-infested hamsters or whatnot. I'd be lying if I say I don't envy his circumstances, but I'm honestly also very happy for Simon and his family. It gives me hope for the better future.
Having been seeing a chiropractor for about 15 years, as long as I've had my back injury... they're very real, and have helped me a ton. About half of the practice is physical therapy, and the rest is proven effective many times over. I had daily migraines until I started getting my neck adjusted - notably not part of my original injury. But my lower back injury began to affect my mid and upper back, and then my neck...and to be able to even TRY to do physical therapy, I needed back and neck adjustments to stop the migraines, at the very least. Not everyone needs chiropractic work, and there ARE many bad ones out there... but I was seeing the same one for 7 years, until she moved offices to another town recently, and I cried about it! She's the best doctor of any kind I've ever had - she made sure to remind me to take care of my mental health, as well as my physical, and encouraged me to stay on top of my physical therapy on my own time, since chiropractic is just to help you along... you have to strengthen muscles to hold all those things in place the proper way yourself! I'm tired of all the 'chiropractors are quacks' rhetoric, tbh. Plenty of medical doctors are quacks too, and just say 'nothing is wrong, go lose weight'... my own doctor wouldn't prescribe me antibiotics for a sinus infection, and it ended up becoming a severe ear infection, and I had to go to a CVS clinic to get the antibiotics! So yeah, I'll trust the chiro who cares about me and my well-being. American healthcare is trash, so cherish a good doctor of any sort when you find one.

Man on the subject of jury trials and impartiality- every time this comes up I’m reminded of the woman my dad served on a jury with who refused to do any deliberation because “the police wouldn’t have arrested him if he wasn’t guilty”
Yeah. I think the jury system needs to weed out the plain incompetent people.

Except for samples for “research”: one in the USA’s CDC, and I REALLY hope I’m wrong but the Soviet government had a sample too I think…

After working in the court system here in the US for over 15 years, if I was charged with a crime and was innocent, I would definitely go with a trial before a judge.
I like when your writers collaborate and I like “audience participation” bits. All in all great episode.
New episode? An hour and half long? Written by Emma?
… Don’t mind if I do.
Dear Simon, will you be covering the crimes of *Team Rocket*
I know they are the “bad guys” but I don’t understand what they actually did, other than get in Ash’s way from time to time.
So, if you go by the games, and depending upon how intelligent pokémon are:
*Theft* (This is a given - pokéballs are property, and the taking of pokémon from trainers involves the stealing of the pokéballs. However, if pokémon legally count as animals rather than people, then the pokémon of trainers would count as pets, and taking of pets would be theft. There are also instances of Team Rocket taking specific, non-animate items without their owner's consent, which is, again, theft.)
*Kidnapping* (This is the one that applies if pokémon count as people. I think that this is dubious at best, otherwise trainers catching pokémon could be treated as a crime. However, Team Rocket does take Mr. Fuji hostage during their Cubone skull theft plot in Lavender Town and takes the majority of the employees of Silph Co. hostage, both of which are classed as kidnapping, as well as kidnapping the station manager of the radio tower in Goldenrod City.)
*Breaking and Entering* and *Burglary* (In R/B/Y and FR/LG, one of the houses in Cerulean City has been burglarized by Team Rocket. In G/S/C and HG/SS, one of the owners of the same house references the event.)
*Illegal Mining* (Team Rocket intends to sell fossils it mines from Mount Moon. If a similar law exists in the Kanto region, that might criminalise Team Rocket's Mount Moon mining operation.)
*Gross Negligence while engaged in Inherently Dangerous Activity* (This one's a weird, and slightly dubious, one. Team Rocket's activities during the events of G/S/C and HG/SS involve the use of a machine that brainwashes pokémon and induces evolution in the Magikarp in the Lake of Rage, near Mahogany Town, in order to capture and sell the resulting Gyarados. Given the notoriously aggressive nature of Gyarados and Team Rocket's clear understanding that the machine would induce evolution, Team Rocket would be liable for any injuries resulting from this.)
*Cruelty to Animals* (Team Rocket's experimentation on pokémon is noted to be cruel, focusing on extracting profit and/or deriving means to seize political power.)
*Domestic Terrorism* (This one should be obvious.)
*Criminal Harassment* (Only one Grunt, in HG/SS, carried out against a Kimono Girl. Probably not a crime that can actually be laid at the feet of the organisation, instead levelled at the Grunt in question.)
*Operation of an Unlicensed Casino* (This is heavily dependent upon whether there's actually a law in place - some jurisdictions outright ban the operation of gambling shops and casinos, others license them. If Kanto's legal system is based on Japanese law, the Game Corner would be entirely illegal - in keeping with its being run by Team Rocket.)
*Poaching* (This one's another dubious one. Team Rocket isn't above capturing massive numbers of wild pokémon for sale, including rare or even unique specimens. However, there's no evidence of a law against capturing pokémon, even en masse, so this is on distinctly shaky ground, legally-speaking.)
*Racketeering* (Team Rocket is a criminal organisation that reportedly turns a profit - in part by running the Game Corner, but in part by extortion, sale of stolen pokémon and theft.)
Quite the list.

It's okay Simon, some of us are here partially for the tangents 😂
Good tangent today and story today that I haven’t heard and I learned a lot on the jury system
