I would be wonderful if when a squirrel attempted to eat out of the feeder it would initiate a loud scary sound to chase away the squirrels. 🍂🍁💚🙃

The audible alarm system is to scare away the squirrels. I'm sure the capability to speak to it is also for the squirrels or other critters.

I've used bird feeders in the past & ultimately took them down.
Even in your video, you see birds picking & choosing their choice of food and tossing out of the feeder what they don't want.
This makes quite a mess on the ground, which brings in the mice, as well as other non desirable birds which chase away the very birds I would prefer.
I believe I'll stick with selecting flowers for pollination, trees with berries for the birds & bird baths .
    Have a great weekend 🍒

For me this would be a squirrel feeder. I couldn't figure out how to keep the squirrels out of my feeder and then they recommended you take them down this year because of bird flu. I like the idea of this, maybe one day.

I find giving in a little bit and leaving sunflower seeds on my fence rail with a couple peanuts every day is enough to redirect them off the feeder. I will say there’s only 3 squirrels who live on my block, so I may have it easy.

Looks like a great idea. I wonder if there is a way to connect with Google ID or something? I don't use those software, but definitely something to consider.
I imagine you could attach a small nectar tube to attract humming birds as well.
Obviously they repurposed the doorbell cam idea, but it really is a smart idea.

This is a good idea for a feeder. We have a feeder mounted to the kitchen window so we can watch up close and I have taken pictures of birds and squirrels in the feeder. Of course I didn't think of something like this that could have been a business for me. Oh well there is still gardening to be done anyway. Cool vid Jason. Thanks.

Jason, thanks for another interesting video. I like the idea of the camera for the birds, but frankly, it seems rather complicated and I don't know if I would purchase it. If I did, it would be for my daughter and son-in-law who live adjacent to a federally protected area of woods. They get a huge variety of wildlife that they really enjoyatching and identifying.

I was given this camera as a gift. Haven't installed it anywhere yet. I guess you don't have a squirrel problem. I do. That's my issue of trying to figure out where to put this device. I also didn't get the solar panel which is too bad. They says a charged battery will last six months. We'll see!

Hi, I hope you did eventually find a suitable place for your camera-bird feeder. I am curious to know if you did find a way to prevent squirrels from hogging the feed? In my situation, I don't mind if the little creatures take a few meals now and then, but obviously I would prefer to have the birds at the camera the majority of the time.

Jason, Great Video! Auto Bird Identification is the main function of Birdfy.
When you save the AI picture, the phone will save two pictures - the original image and the bird ID image. Andriod phone can only save the original image now, but it will update soon, please wait for the new APP version.

Will this work without wi fi ( internet) ? Can you use just with phone service? Thanks for sharing. Different foods attract different birds. Try Expermenting with that. Also try hanging some with bird cakes. Your going to love this at your farm!

Thanks. The focal length on these doorbell cams is typically made for longer than the 10" or so of the feeder, so I was thinking that hanging a bird cake or suet a couple of feet away might improve the footage too.

Due to avian flue, which is a big problem in the Fraser Valley, it’s been advised to not stock feeders! They become major transmission points as birds congregate at them.

    • @FraserValleyRoseFarm
      @FraserValleyRoseFarm  Рік тому

Thanks for adding this. I do keep an eye on bulletins from the CFIA (because of plant health advisories mainly, but they're the regulatory body in Canada for domestic livestock as well). APHIS (their US counterpart) and CFIA have only recommended that feeders are removed from areas open to domestic poultry - and then also offered some advice on proper sanitation (updated as of August 2022). Birds Canada and Cornell's AllAboutBirds.org offer similar advice and their research ( www.birdscanada.org/help-respond-to-the-avian-influenza-outbreak and www.allaboutbirds.org/news/avian-influenza-outbreak-should-you-take-down-your-bird-feeders/ ) although I'm sure they'd follow the APHIS and CFIA recommendations if those were to change. The news stories in BC seem to come from an advisory from the local SPCA spca.bc.ca/news/bc-spca-asks-public-to-remove-bird-feeders-due-to-avian-influenza-outbreak/ where their information seems to vary a bit from actual public health officials. In any case, it seem that they were only offering advice for the main part of the fall migration, and still (seem) to recommend feeding "in winter between October and March" further down in the article. Thanks for the heads up - it was worth a read!

@@FraserValleyRoseFarm Those are good sources, I was going from a recommendation from the British Columbia Waterfowl society. Just shows how many difference sources there are!

You're right. Basic doorbell cameras (which is the tech it's based on) are pretty inexpensive now, so for this one you'd be paying a premium for the extras... the solar panel, birdhouse and of course the ID app. I'll bet there's a less expensive version on the market soon if not already.

A great gadget if i still live in the country. When i was a kid, we had lots of colourful birds coming out once in awhile from the nypa swamp. I think for it will be awesome if the software can be install in pc too.
I just realized how great it is if it can be used in Biodiversity field trip. When i was a Biology student, i took an elective course from Forestry Dept called Intro to Biodiversity. We set traps for medium to small animals amd mist nets for birds. Mist net were nasty things. It was long, tall and durable but it was also so fine we could easily entangled in it. One wrong moves and if it get ripped, bye bye saving$. We caught lots of birds we never seen before including the smallest kingfisher in the world, a gorgeous red coloured trogon but the most shocking to the lecturers and other students was the tiny hawk my group caught. It was my turn to check the net with my group leader. Since i had took a compulsory Bio subject, Biodiversity of Vertebrates i was able to identify the hawk several metres away. My leader was a bit disbelieve when told him we got a hawk and needed to don gloves to release it. It was a "fun" half an hour process, between dodging the hawk's razor beaks and claws and making sure our buttons and zipper heads didn't get caught in the mist net. The only thing this gadget can't do is the tagging process we did to all the birds caught. But in terms of identifying birds in natural settings this sure beats the net. No problem if the AI can't do the identification, we bought field guide to help in that department.
