You have dialects and slang within countries and also between countries. I once saw a short about an american woman being angry hearing an englishman speaking english english. She screamed that he should learn how to speak real english. I don't think she had any idea where english come from. Why is there a country in Europe named England and why is there a language named english?
This is really a case of trying to create a language divide. 5 minutes is all it takes to explain a difference. Of course the real yawning gaps between the UK and the US have already been covered. It also ignores the fact that vowel sounds can alter almost at random across a stretch of land smaller than Wyoming. Nobody speaks the same as me 90 miles away.
