I remember being upset with one of my classmates because she kept on telling everyone she has OCD which is why she wants things in order. My friend asked her if she was actually diagnosed by a Doctor and she answered him, "No, but I have the symptoms though". My friend got so upset over her diagnosing herself because that's just not a right thing to do and being from a family full of medical professionals, he lectured her about OCD being a real disorder and not just something that anyone could freely use in order to excuse their perfectionism. He said that some people are actually suffering from this disorder and that affects how they live their life so no one should be using that word freely without any medical professionals actually diagnosing them. I was so proud of him that day (because he's just quiet most of the time and he rarely voices out his opinions).

The thing is..some people don’t go to the doctor and still have OCD. You don’t know if she actually had it or not but you both assumed she didn’t which could easily cause issues for her in the long run. All he really had to say was if you think you’re OCD you should get a check up rather than going on a tangent about it. Most diagnosis and check ups start with an inkling that something is not as it seems and as the internet becomes more abundant more people are realizing they probably have disorders and they didn’t know it. So I don’t think he was in the right at all. At best tell her to get a check up at worst tell her she shouldn’t say she has it for sure but instead say she suspects she has it.

@@tired6971 I agree with you. Bc for them to say ''I have symptoms though'' means that they have already researched the disorder. I too struggle with symptoms of OCD but I am not diagnosed bc I don't have the means to do so. Although I want to get tested, I cannot do it at the moment. So yeah, I also don't think that it is right to assume that they do not have OCD but it is best to advise them to get tested if they have the means.

I hate it when people lie about having OCD either because they want attention or believe it means "neat" and that they like things orderly. I am always tempted to ask "have you spent 2 hours opening and closing a drawer until you break down in sobs because you feel that you have lost complete control of yourself?" or "have you stayed awake at night crying and vomiting out of depression and terror of the consequences of not doing what the voice in your head is telling you?". I appreciate this, but perfectionism is also a huge thing in some people’s lives can be debilitating. Idk I just feel like both of these situations may be very hard, and this video did not accurately represent perfectionism at all.

    • @dustbitten
      @dustbitten 2 місяці тому

      @@annoyingmusiclover1936
I know I’m 3 yrs late but if your perfectionism is “debilitating” then there might legitimately be something more going on worth discussing with a doctor. Typically the requirement for being diagnosed with a disorder, aside from showing symptoms, is that it affects your quality of life and/or your ability to function. Most people will present with symptoms of any particular mental disorder at some point in their lives but they wouldn’t get diagnosed because it doesn’t affect their quality of life. For example in the video Rae can’t eat lunch before washing her hands, it’s a source of anxiety, BUT it doesn’t affect her ability to walk away from the sink after washing her hands just once. Whereas Lauren’s symptoms are truly debilitating because she washes her hands raw. I feel like maybe the video should’ve emphasized that difference. They BOTH have symptoms but one can’t self-regulate them. And also even if you’re not this extreme it doesn’t mean you can’t have a mild case.

Exactly. I've been diagnosed with these 3 same mental health issues some years, it's an actual hell.
With OCD I feel like I lose myself because of intrusive thoughts that I can't control and end at all and because of the fact that endless rituals take away a huge amount of time in my daily life.
With anxiety I find myself to not being able to do even simple things anymore, like doing a phone call or going out of home. Where is my life going?
With depression I lose myself because I lose will to live, I lose hope, I lose my passions.
I've been going to therapy for more than 6 years and taking meds for 5-ish years, I haven't gotten better with OCD but at least sometimes or periods anxiety and depression hit a little less harder.

Oh My God thank you finally someone addressed this. As someone who actually does have OCD, you have made me very very happy. My compulsions though don't really revolve around avoiding catastrophic clutter but they do definitely revolve around hypochondria. I always carry anti bac and use it every time I touch something, I can't eat until I wash my hands cause I'm worried about getting sick. Last week my prof told me she was sick and in between lecture and tutorial I actually ran to grab surgical masks so I wouldn't catch anything. The car thing is also something I would totally do. I've had instances where I thought I may have forgotten to empty my locker on the last day at school so I walked all the way back there to make sure I had in fact emptied it of all the garbage. Or do you ever get that feeling that you've forgotten something? That's enough to make me turn right around and head back just to double check. And I always do the numbers thing. But it revolves around 3 or 7 or a combination of the two. Stuff like that. And it really bothers me when people say "I have OCD cause I dropped this thing and when I pick it up it has to be facing the same way as it was before" Everyone does that you know.

Perfectionism also deserves compassion and understanding - not everyone is a perfectionist. Washing your hands before you eat or dismissing the thought you hit someone with your car is not perfectionism. The term is so loosely thrown around nowadays that people forget it is debilitating. Perfectionism is to do with having an abject fear of failure. That something bad will happen if this person fails by their own omission. It is to do with having unattainably high standards that have been set by the person having grown as a result of developing silly coping mechanisms. It can cause severe anxiety in daily life; affect the ability to sleep and have a normal life. Dumbing it down like this only adds to the negative stereotype of perfectionism.

The disorder is generalised anxiety and mental health symptoms recognised are depression, both ranging from moderate to severe, however, the problem is perfectionism/fear of failure and it needs to addressed in therapy as such. For example, I'm not a diagnosed "perfectionist" - I have severe anxiety and moderate depression which are my symptoms if you like, but my problem has presented itself through perfectionist ideals/setting such barriers as coping mechanisms, and is being treated through CBT therapy - unlearning all that I have "learned" through setting these ideals for myself and coming to terms with why and how this has developed slowly throughout my teenage years (I am 25 and a postgraduate student now). Of course, perfectionist ideals do affect people differently and other people are more able to cope with it. At least, this is my interpretation and what I've learned anyway :)

Correct. Perfectionism is indeed a disorder. I, sadly, have been struggling since I was a very young child. My disorder often upsets people around me, which i don't fully understand why. It's not like I walk up to them and say their face is ugly, then spit on them. I often comment about how people are not living to their fullest potential, and why they do not do the best possible. I dislike this video. It makes it seem as if perfectionism is easy, and that everyone has it. That is insanely incorrect. I believe that the creators of this video do not understand the daily struggles of people with this disorder. I will give them a bit of freedom, saying that maybe they don't know anyone with perfectionism, but that is no excuse. If that is the case, they should have done more research.

Yes I agree ocd shouldn't be used as an adjective and should be seen as a condition that deserves compassion and understanding, but this video makes it seem like perfectionism is normal and easy. I'm a perfectionist and its really hard to deal with beating yourself up every time I dont do something "perfect." For example, I'm trying to learn guitar. Whenever I make a mistake I play the whole song over until I play the whole song without any mistakes. Sometimes when I just cant play a song right I get fustrated and give up on guitar for a while. The thought of making a mistake while playing the guitar makes me wanna rip my hair out and cry.

I know it sounds like ocd, but its not like the kinda thing whereas a person with ocd keep checking things a certain number of times to be certain that it won't cause harm in the future, I dont have repeated unwanted thoughts, I dont count things to relieve anxiety, I just strive to be as perfect as possible. On the guitar I only play songs over again to get it as perfect as possible so I feel gud about myself. Also I try to be as accurate as possible so I dont cause misunderstandings, tho this is a problem sometimes cuz I correct my mom alot which I feel bad about. And at school I try to get the highest grade in a class to also feel gud about myself. For me not being perfect doesnt really cause me anxiety like it wud a person with ocd, its just irritating.
And even if I did have ocd I dont really see a point in getting an official diagnosis cuz its not really causing me any real problems.
Ps. Sorry if this is alot

I never insisted or even thought of claiming that i have OCD, but being unable to do something perfectly enough causes me anxiety too 😕 and it’s very difficult to keep my mind off of anything i might’ve done wrong, I cannot just dismiss the thought, it isn’t that easy.
Although perfectionism is still something hard to deal with, or more accurately the lack of perfection is, it’s clear OCD is a serious and troubling condition and shouldn’t be taken lightly by anybody. Everyone has issues they deal with and I think what matters most is that we show respect and don’t take other people’s struggles lightly.

I agree. I actually have obsessive-compulsive disorder, arithmomania, fear of schizophrenia, and obsessive thinking disorder- all linked to OCD. I'm tired of seeing different people on the internet exaggerating about this serious topic. Literally, I see someone on the internet that says. "That tile on the floor is uneven, I'm so OCD about that!" I HATE these people, and don't take that lightly. If you're one of these people, STOP IT. People with OCD are so frustrated about you people. OCD is a serious topic. When I try to tell someone, like a family member or friend about my OCD, due to the large amounts of exaggeration they've heard about OCD, they don't want to listen to me. If it weren't for these people, I could have my large amounts of anxiety cleared up and nearly cured by now. Like I said before, stop it. Whoever read this until the end, thank you so much. Like I said before, if someone you know is one of these people, please talk to them about this problem that they have. Feel free to reply to this comment and share your thoughts. :)

I had a friend once say I don't have it because she doesn't see me constantly wash my hands and I'm not organized. First off prior to therapy and meds I was constantly washing my hands I'm not neat and organized because I'm also ADD and its too overwhelming because I don't have a clue where to start. I don't like getting rid of things because I have hoarding tendencies. Though I'm a lot better I'm constantly having intrusive repetitive thoughts and every day is a struggle. I would count have rituals fear death if I didn't abide by those rituals but no because someone reads a text book definition or watched this show monk lets just assume that person doesn't fit the criteria.

If I forget about one or two I HAVE to do it or else I end up with a panic attack. I've gotten in trouble at school for taking too long outside because I have to make sure I don't step on anything the wrong way or if I do step on something (grass, twig, crack, different color carpet, ect) I have to step on it the same exact way with my other foot. I read a book called "OCDaniel" before. It's one of my fav books. Even though I don't have OCD, I could actually feel how the main character, Daniel, feels the pain and anxiety each night and day. His OCD affected him a lot and I can actually feel it from the book. It was a very touching story of how at first Daniel didn't know he had OCD and thought he was just crazy, for all the OCD thoughts he had. For example, he had to wash his hands and scrub it with soup so hard and many numbers of times bc he thought that if he didn't, the world would end and his gut feeling knew that that was probably not true, but he couldn't shake off the anxiety. If he went to sleep without doing his Ritual, he would actually be crying himself to sleep and in the end he still could not defeat it and has to do it again until 4 or 5 in the morning. Like I said, I don't have OCD, but I'm pretty sure I have a feeling of what OCD people would feel like and I hope those people are rlly OK. God bless them.

Im glad I found this... I have Ocd. Not perfectionism but Ocd. People are scared to recognize Mental illnesses , and for some reason its almost like they are scared of when someone has them, but what they should really be doing is Acknowledging that we are all imperfect, its not our fault and instead of being scared of it, DEAL WITH IT. HELP. TRY TO UNDERSTAND. Im not scared of my Ocd, Its life ... and it doesn't define me. Thank you to those who work hard to put these skits together..I don't feel alone and it gives me a sense of normality in the sense that Its okay to have it . More people should understand that :)

I'm a perfectionist I have never said im a little ocd because i have adhd and i hate and just cant take when people that fidget a little or cant always focus say they are a little adhd so,I have never thought about saying that because its so annoying so whenever some onesays they are a little ADHD or a little OCD I always ask have you gone to a neuroligst or for ADHD I might also say have you had any scans done or If you think you have adhd or ocd tell a parent and try to make a neuroligy appointment of course i always say it politely but most of the time I have such a deep feeling to the point that I'm 97 percent sure they are not adhd because I know how itsl feels even if I now am on medication I still feel symptoms just its easeir to control and I can actually function and focuse and get stuff done

I had to get back on adhd medication after being off 3 months and unemployed as soon as I did I got a job within a week. It was nearly impossible to sit there and have any idea where to start without meds. I stopped taking OCD meds and noticed I started doing this scratching thing and had intrusive thoughts that disturbed my sleep. I got on some meds to help and I have been better but im still checking things like crazy. I started to put a tally so I know I really did check it.

I have symptoms of ADHD but I dont know if I have it or not and what happens if i go get a brain scan and they say I do have it will they put me on weird medication? Oh and my symptoms are attention span issues forgetting things constantly and having anxiety the whole day my teachers all have said the same thing "your daughter doesn't pay attention and never listens and forgets" one of my teachers even said you sure there is nothing wrong with you? I denied it cause I dont think i had any issue with my brain I can't pay attention at all and my mind wanders during random time in the day during a shower during helping out my mother it happens a lot I have extremely random thoughts and my thoughts never are the same they change and I forget stuff so often I overheard my classmates talking about how I forget everything help

Isabel Allen OCPD is basically a bridge between the two, but with the severity of OCD. So perfectionism can indeed become a medical disorder as well, but it takes up hours of your day just like OCD.

OCD has to be diagnosed to someone so no one can say “I’m so OCD” if they are not diagnosed and if they think they are OCD then they should see someone to confirm or deny them. I only know that because my cousin has OCD and the doctor he saw when he was 5 years old said they have to be diagnosed. My cousin has 7 disorders/disabilities: OCD, ODD, ADHD, Autism, Dyslexia, Epilepsy, and type one diabetes so I know a lot about all those disorders. He also had brain cancer from 1-7 years old. Btw my cousin is now 15 years old.

Nobody cares about you invading your cousin's privacy on UA-cam, but thanks for reminding people to get diagnosed.
And yes, it is possible to having multiple diagnoses. That many are seldom heard of at once, but mental illnesses can indeed come in multiples. They can happen to those with autoimmune problems who more prone to diseases such as cancer and heart failure. I've had cancer and mental illnesses. Considering 1 in 3 people get cancer in their lifetime and 1 in 5 get a mental illness, having cancer and a mental illness at the same time isn't actually THAT out of the ordinary. Thankfully my cancer was very easy to deal with though, just requiring 2 tests, a surgery, and 3 check-ups. Sucks to hear about your cousin's brain cancer though.

Yeah. I agree 100%. I have OCD and said something about it in class and one girl was like “Same!” but I wish people understood it more. The reason I’m in all honors classes is because of my OCD. I go to therapy because of my OCD. I am in my parents’ room with my homework instead of my room right now because my tassels on my rug are messed up and I get nervous looking at them like that. I have to be the best at everything because of my OCD. I have BDD because of my OCD. OCD sucks and it pisses me off when people throw the word around like it’s nothing.

Ugh I hate when people are like "this triggers my OCD" or "I'm having OCD rn". It's so annoying. People who actually have OCD probably don't want it so stop using it as an adjective because ITS NOT AN ADJECTIVE.

idk but when i go to sleep i put all the pillows near the walls (like until they cover up the hard surfaces) i even cover up the tiniest spots left. and i can't fall asleep without doing that. i stayed up for like 30 mins by doingg that because i have a thought of hitting my head against the wall and eventually die lol wtf

    • @k3japan

That's likely a form of sleep anxiety. It's more common than many people think. OCD doesn't just happen at night. Anxiety is more random.

it's your own sleeping ritual, which might help you with anxiety thoughts... if it affects your personal life, work, school, relatioships, and causes distress, then it might be a form of anxiety disorder

can someone help me? I don't know if I do or don't have OCD. I just know that I have anxiety since I was a kid. Now that I've read about OCD, I feel like it explains a lot about me. But still I have no idea. Tell me if any of you do things like me.
    1. I overuse soap, shampoo, and always washing my face and brushing teeth repeatedly 3 to 4 times because I'm scared there still some germs left on me
    2. I pick my skin and hair even if it hurts so bad I cant stop, it happens everyday (doesnt matter if I'm working or doing nothing my hands seem like to have me in control)
    3. I keep checking words 5 to 6 times just to make sure what I've read or write was right (like right now)
    4. I get angry and sometimes start shouting when people (even if it's my parents) move my stuff because I want it to always be in the same place, neat and organized
    5. I took 5 to 10 minutes to take a pee, and I usually go back to the bathroom even after I lay down in bed
    6. I put things straight in line
    7. I get mad when I hear 3 or more voices (including electronics) or when people trying to talk to me when I'm doing something (I shut them off or make faces)
    8. I count numbers over and over, and triple check everything I do
    9. I repeat my self when I talk
    10. I tell my friends the same story over and over again and only stop when they say "I know, you told me about it a few times already"

Widaad Bawahab The issue you describe in your second point is called "body-focused repetitive behavior" or BFRB. It is kind of a subset of OCD, and many people diagnosed with OCD suffer from BFRBs, as well as people without full-blown OCD (like myself.) Specifically, obsessive-compulsively picking at the skin (especially to the point of damaging the skin or feeling pain) is called excoriation disorder or dermatillomania. Pulling out hair is called trichatillomania. There are other types of BFRBs, and while I am not a doctor or someone with any type of medical license, I will say that it sounds to me like you do suffer from a couple of specific BFRBs. I have done permanent damage to my body due to my excoriation disorder, so I have personal experiences with BFRBs. Again, this is just my opinion.
I can't comment on the other stuff because like I said, I'm not a medical professional nor do I have full-blown OCD. I highly encourage you to seek professional help from a mental health expert who can officially diagnose you and provide help and guidance with what you are dealing with. :)

I wasn't clinically diagnosed with OCD. But, back when I was in highschool I was fixated with the number 60. My daily activities have been affected by counting in each task I do and if I missed a number I would repeat it again until I am satisfied. I didn't really paid much attention about it, but it turned out that if affected me mentally and socially. I always come in school late, sleep late at night because I'm having too much thoughts running in my mind and worse it causes me too much anxiety that I feel helpless most of the time. My family is not aware of it because having OCD or other mental illness is not commonly discussed or should I say still socially unacceptable even up to this day. Eventually, I had the initiative to change my habit and made my own path to redirect myself to a better mental state. Sometimes you don't need someone to help you. Help yourself first before others do.

Okay. I get this but there are different levels of OCD. I have OCD but it isn't so bad and I can function normally but there are still little bumpy bits along the way. All that I do though is having to revolve everything around 6. I count every six steps I shake the juice carton six times. I blink 6 times at a time ect. It's not that bad and when you claim you have OCD you might just so. Just on a different level with different diagnoses.
