Google is awful at notifications for videos, so I hope it pops up, so I remember to watch! Congratulations. My personal bet will be that you bought one of those Suburbans, because you seemed to love it.
People in dire straights might eat wallpaper paste back then knowing it was made of wheat. Those murals are called Large Letter Murals.. They were photographed and sold to tourists as postcards 1902 was earliest example that I could find. Great post.
If that paste smelled like the paste we used in the 60s…mmm! (The boys tended to use a ton and eat it. 🤣) Wonderhussy stayed in the Clown Motel. 🤡 It’s fun video. Great video as always, Tristan. 👍🏻
Old recipe for paste made out of flour ... make playdough out of flour also (I added dry jello for coloring) so depends what you use. RIP paste eatin' guy.
I look at that and think, “my youngest son would try to jump right in to go swimming. Where’s the barrier?” But then again, it’s in the middle of Nevada, which as we all know, is highly underrated.
The postcard town mural is painted in a style called “Large Letter” and was popular through the mid-20th century. Loved the horses, almost trying to run with you! Also thank you for the history behind everywhere you go! Edited to include my favorite part was Diana’s punch bowl! The geothermal activity and geology in general of the western US is on the top most amazing things about our country (in my nerdy opinion).
Thank you Tristan, that was an extremely enjoyable episode! You do such a good job. Always a great way to start my Saturday. I live in Vegas, now I need to go see Diana's Punchbowl, that was incredible.
When on road trips, I like to tune into local radio stations. By far, KGFN... Goldfield radio station. I enjoyed the station most of the way to Death Valley. I still listen in over the net.
I was a printer for 18 years at The Citadel, The Military College of South Carolina. The type font that you're looking for is called 'Coffee Tin'.It was also used on a road sign for the turnoff from I-26 in South Carolina to the historic town of Ninety-six.
I think my favorite part were the wild horses but loved it all. I was bummed you weren't going to go into the clown office. I'm glad you did..lol I would say the punch bowl was close to my favorite but nothing can beat those gorgeous horses! This was such a great video(every minute of it)! Thank you!♡
If you love old towns and mines; please go see, ghost town living, Brent is amazing. You need permission to see Cerro Gordo, but you and your viewers will love it. Free camping on his private property. He bought the town.
Stayed in Tonapa before, interesting place. We ate at a cafe where current miners were eating. Food wasn't to bad, but the miners came straight the mines muddy boots and all haha
I share your love of Nevada. Especially the areas of central Nevada. I've been exploring this state for 48 years and continue to be surprised by its secret places. Thanks for sharing this very special place! ❤️
I used to go down in a mine near Goldfield with my neighbor when I lived in Vegas. He had been going to the place since the 1960s there was a petrified rabbit that looked alive had been sitting in a corner for 100 yrs. I love that part of the world thanks for sharing
Awesome! I may never travel to, or within Nevada, so I appreciate the "tour." Favorite part: The cave art was/is amazing. But, I have to go with the horses. There's something comforting about knowing some of them still run wild.
Seems like you and Wonderhussey are covering the same territory but many of your hiking adventures are Epic. Your unique process is art. I’m not saying stick to what you do best. I want to encourage you to push the envelope think outside the box and don’t go changing. Nothing but love for you and the wife.Peace
Diana's Punch Bowl reminds me of my country's famous volcano "Mount Pinatubo". The crater looks like a bowl with water at the center. However, it's hotness is tolerable like a spa lake. Filipinos just loved swimming on it. The volcano is also attractive to foreign tourist. They love swimming in there as well. Thank you for tagging us along. It's nice to see different places virtually without spending huge money just to see those beautiful places. 😊😊
That tiny basket on the end of the boom on the truck is mine rescue equipment. It wasn't meant for normal lowering and raising men into a mine. The Tonopah Mining museum is excellent for seeing things like this. At night that tall hotel has had its sign restored - its the Mizpah - and the sign is visible at night for many many miles.
I was in Tonopah in my early teens and the grandparents we went to visit there lived literally in the middle of nowhere. About 100 yd away there was a lone cemetery that had a wrought-iron fence around it... right oit of a horror movie. It was one of the creepiest and most beautiful places I've ever seen.
Lovely stuff mate, I lived in a car back in 1983 for 6 months with a mate. We did Route 66 and ran out of money in the first 5 weeks, we had some adventures after that. America has it all, deserts, mountains, forests, oceans, swamps, cities, long long rods, and still more, with all of the beauty along the way,. Thanks for touching on the history of the place. I love trekking and have endless tales around the world, what you are doing is a good thing, I am from the old Backpacking era and going out there and taking a look of the value of the ground you are walking on is rare today. Thank you , I watch many of you videos.
Diana’s punchbowl is my favorite! Is this from a meteorite? Oh and the wild horses, wow! I really loved this episode and love to see some of the more aknown places in the USA.
Awesome! Goldfield is one of our favorites but sadly we didn't have time for the Goldfield cemetery while there. It would appear we missed out on some very interesting things. Library paste is something I've not yet seen on a headstone I have to say. The Mitzpah Hotel is actually pretty lovely inside. We've stayed twice now and is one of our favorite historic hotels. Somehow we missed the castle, cave or Diana's Punchbowl though (probably due to the location as you stated) so onto our list they go! Very much appreciate the info about them.
Just drove through the area last week going from Eli to Tonopah and one can see that Nevada really does have more Mountain Ranges than any other state. The other thing that stood out to me was that the gas stations in Tonopah all had the exact same prices for their gas.
Thanks for the adventure! I live in So. Cal. and I have always wanted to explore! I especially enjoy walking through old cemeteries. I fnd them fascinating.
Back in the 40-50's, in high schools everywhere, the first course in tech (pre-engineering) was drafting, in which boys learned that square-edge lettering.
As an almost native nevadan of 45 years, I've travelled on highway 95 many many times from Reno to Vegas passing thru goldfield and tonopah....like stepping back in history.. my fav place in goldfield is what I call pigeon house..hundreds roost on the front porch roof every fall.!
A few years back I wanted to go to the Toquima Cave and check out the rock art but I thought the road was too sketchy for my car. Instead I went past Austin and checked out the Hickison Petroglyphs. The Petroglyphs were very nice and they have a small campground there.
WOW Tristan!!! Out of the many videos you have made over the last few years, this one called my attention deeply into many different things! I love your question about the style of the graffiti, great question! Loved the shafts, the punch bowl (scary) and you have me nightmares with those clowns! So I feel like "returning the favor": have you considered that each of those clowns was not the only piece ever produced but part of some amount of mass- produced clowns? Multiply the number you saw in there by the total amount of clowns ever made... now the world sounds like one of the scariest places in the universe, we are surrounded! Brrrrrr
Really great episode, loved the mix of historic sites and natural wonders. Amazing footage of the wild horses. Being a fan of geological oddities, the punchbowl gets the gold for me here, but it was all really interesting.
Fantastic video! Your video perfectly encapsulates why I love Nevada so much. There are so many nooks and crannies to explore. I'll be looking forward to your SUV reveal this week and your trip to the Rubies!
Thanks for another fun trip, Tristan! I'm no graphic arts expert, but you'd have to think some of the earliest examples of that block letter style that got wide exposure were the early and mid-century movie studio logos from films of that era . . .
That’s a great video with spectacular destinations. I drove through NV from UT with my two sons in June, and we ended up going through the town of Tonopah. We passed the “Extraterrestrial highway” on the way there, but didn’t have time to explore it. I agree that NV is underrated. It’s arid, but it has its own beauty for sure!
We agree with you, Nevada is underrated. We drove Hwy 50 back in June and we were pleasantly surprised with what we saw. Enjoy your videos; keep exploring!
My first experience with Goldfield was driving through at night. I could tell there was a town but there were so few lights on in any of the structures that it was very eerie. And then I drove by the massive, dark Goldfield Hotel. Very trippy and weird. I visited later that year take photos of the town in daylight. Hard to believe it's a county seat! Nevada is indeed very underrated. It's not quite for everyone's tastes, but for those who can appreciate the big expansive lands and little unique features throughout, it's amazing.
Great video thanks for sharing. Takes me back 50 plus years to my childhood when we used to do nothing but camping all over the place especially Nevada being that I grew up in Southern California now reside in Colorado
Tonopah is a nice town and since it is still very much alive, it is the county seat,, there is enough there to stay and visit. The Mizpah Hotel was the tallest building in Nevada for a number of years. The hotels in Los Vegas at that point were 2-3 story sprawling structures, rather than tall. And it is gorgeous inside, fully updated but with antiques too. Yes, I've been there.
I drove from North Rim up through St George Cedar City and got a good idea of the landscape. Your campsite reminded me how beautiful the high desert can be
That was all very good/weird and interesting! Loved the Punchbowl and the horses. Clowns 🤡 yuck. But good to know. I love the music - you always find beautiful and appropriate music for your pieces. What was that? A slide guitar? How do you find it?
Montezuma’s well in AZ (just off of I-17) is similar to the punch bowl. It was a cavern with an underground spring until the roof collapsed. There are cliff dwellings there and a stairway leading to the bottom. The water doesn’t have any oxygen in it, so not a lot of life, but the natives believe it to be sacred. The water leaves through a small crevice near the bottom of the stairs and the natives hand-hewed a canal to water their crops. Great spot to visit.
Next time you see horses running like that ... can you chase them with the drone? That would be awesome! You could act like you're shooting ... an old western. Very nice video.
Wow those pictographs really caught my attention and gave me a feeling of the depiction of a catastrophe. 19:20 seemed to depict fireball and fire on the land 19:30 gives me the impression of a meteor shower and chaos 19:40 looks to depict the sun, mars on the other side, Venus and the Earth with the moon, these are visible in the night sky. After when you mentioned it was more of a shelter, it gave some confirmation to my initial gut feeling.
I bought a new SUV last week! Check back at 6 am (Pacific time) on Tuesday for the video reveal!
Wow cool! My guess is Subaru Forester.
Congrats! Looking forward to seeing your new camper. 😎
Google is awful at notifications for videos, so I hope it pops up, so I remember to watch! Congratulations. My personal bet will be that you bought one of those Suburbans, because you seemed to love it.
Congrats! Excited to see what the choice was!
toyota ftw
Loved the wild horses!

@@lindadechiazza2924 The paste probably plugged him up.
That punch bowl was just crazy! I wonder if anyone just dove in not realizing it was near boiling hot.
I thought the same. Or if a person was just driving would they know it’s ahead
I'm sure that's how they originally found out! Lol
I look at that and think, “my youngest son would try to jump right in to go swimming. Where’s the barrier?”
But then again, it’s in the middle of Nevada, which as we all know, is highly underrated.

We live in Nevada so we enjoyed the whole video. My wife loved seeing the wild mustangs running alone next to your SUV.
The postcard town mural is painted in a style called “Large Letter” and was popular through the mid-20th century.
Loved the horses, almost trying to run with you! Also thank you for the history behind everywhere you go!

I LOVED THIS TRISTAN!!!!
I think that style came from old historic post card art. Thank you for covering Nevada - the best state in the country, IMHO!
I have several postcards with that art.

Horses were magnificent!
Adventures of A&K just mentioned the artists that do the 'postcard' city signs in their North Dakota episode.👍

Amazing pictographs. Interesting oddities, thank you for sharing. Just curious: how many miles does your rav have on it?
Diana’s Punchbowl was one of the coolest things you’ve shown ever. Though the cave with the petroglyphs came close.

Not far from where I live, there is a property that has a riding lawnmower graveyard. Lots of them. Just sitting randomly in a stand of trees.
There is something like that here in Ohio but it’s on private, unoccupied, home site. There must be 200 plus mowers with weeds growing everywhere.

Perfect music at the end of your time in Goldfield.
Back in the day we made essentially paper mache forms for taxidermied animals. We mixed arsenic in the paste to kill bugs that will try to eat it.
