- Dig Deeper Episode 46 celebrates the first public display of a 400 year old Roman Lock Pistol in the Nathalie P. & Alan M. Voorhees Archaearium Museum at Historic Jamestowne.
In Part 1 - David Givens (Director of Archaeology at Jamestown Rediscovery) describes why finding artifacts in a well can be very rewarding. In addition, he describes his successful recovery of a loaded pistol from the bottom of a Jamestown well dug c. 1611.
In Part 2 (to be released mid-March 2002), Michael D. Lavin, Jamestown Rediscovery’s Director of Collections & Conservation, provides information on the types of firearms used 400 years ago at Jamestown. This information includes a detailed description of the 400 year old Roman Lock Pistol and why it is a uniquely rare find.
In Part 3 (to be released end of March 2022), Jamestown Rediscovery Conservator, Dr. James (Chris) Wilkins explains how this unique pistol was conserved over a 15 year period and why this effort was particularly challenging.
Finally, should you be interested in learning about the wood present in the pistol stock please view our previously released UA-cam video, “Wood identification on the pistol stock recovered in 2006” at • Wood identification on...

Sharing the process is one thing, but sharing the emotion of the team is so much more! This is how you inspire to aspire! Thank you.
Too cool!!! Just dug a ton of artifacts today as well. Came home to rest and relax by watching others uncover more artifacts!
This would be a great story to tell your grandchildren.
These are so wonderful to listen to and watch.
Does anyone else love the sound of the scrapping on the dirt at the introduction?
Me!! 🙆♂️
I do. I’m glad you mentioned it. I always wondered who’s doing it. 🙋♀️🇺🇸
I can only imagine the excitement you must have experienced as you lifted such a treasure from that well. I like the well display highlighting the artifacts you’ve found. Great video. Mary
Who doesn't love archeology ? 😎
Can't think of a more exciting job than unearthing historical items
I hope the discoveries keep coming ! Thanks for having this channel and what you do to preserve our history.
Can't wait to visit the museum one day
Congratulations! What a find! Makes it all worth it!
Both the halberd and pistol were among the most mesmerizing finds.
What a fantastic find! Thank you so much for sharing!
So amazing.... please show more of this dig
Is there an xray of the pistol? I'd love to see the inner workings. Do you think someone tossed it in the well to hide it from someone else? Perhaps a Jamestown murder mystery? I'd love to visit someday and see all the artifacts. My relatives supposedly arrived through Jamestown.
Me: “O’ Pistol of the Well, tell us your secrets!”
Pistol of the well: “I’m a literal pistol that’s been stuck in a well for nearly half a millennia…”
Is a roman lock similar to a snaphaunce lock? What is the difference? I look forward to your videos and never fail to learn something new each time. Thank You!
Please explain what a “Roman” lock pistol is. Thanks.
I wish people would pronounce the Powatan Natives as they were originally called: POE uh tahn.
Sorry. This seems to be about you,.. not the artifact. How about why important and useful items are in a well.?
