    I'd be really interested in seeing a series of videos about how you use the Es and Os and Benchmarks as your starting point and build a lesson plan or progression of lesson plans. In other words - how do you turn all of this into an actual learning experience.

    I know this was posted almost a year ago, but I am an elementary school teacher in the USA and I have been considering moving to Scotland to teach. While I am at the beginning phases of learning how my degree will transfer, how to apply for a work visa, etc, I have also taken a dive into understanding the key differences and similarities between the CFE in the UK and the Formative Assessment practices we follow here in my state of Arizona. Broadly speaking, I see so much that speaks to what is being done in the USA within your explanation of the Curriculum for Excellence. While I am unsure if I can manage a move of this size, I am certainly going to continue learning and your video was my first exploration into the voice of the teachers in the UK. Thank you for taking the time to make this video. I am more than eager to keep going.

    Hi Hollie. Thanks for posting this. I appreciate your video. It did give me a basic history of the policy and a general outline of how it functions specifically for teachers (which I assume is your intended audience). As a parent (and an American parent of a Scottish pupil) I will need to dig a lot more into how it is actually implemented at my sons school. My journey into understanding this is specially from a parents perspective. I have become extremely frustrated with all the copy/paste jargon his teachers use to justify their curriculum, along with their complete inability to answer basic questions about the goals of their classes and the progression of the students. This video helped me understand that I am not alone in this criticism. The Benchmark portion was incredibly interesting to me. As a parent I have never seen any reference to this in the materials we are shown. Everything presented to us is incredibly vague and any attempts to ascertain specifics about what is being taught, and what the expected outcome of the courses are is met with resistance leaving me with no clear metrics from which to judge my sons progression and skills. This combined with the dramatic deemphasis on homework makes it nearly impossible to keep track of, support or supplement, or provide assistance to my son in the areas he may be struggling.
    As the son of teacher I know how bureaucracy and assessments can exhaust teachers and it can be weaponised against them to justify funding cuts etc, but surely there has got to be some metrics presented by which to evaluate the performance of a school and its staff. Can you recommend any resources which should be publicly available to parents for all schools in Scotland to asses this?

      Thank you for your comment! I have just posted a video this evening about the planning process; that video might give you more of an insight into how these documents are used and the steps that teachers *generally* need to follow when planning for a term of teaching. In the description section of that video, I have also left links to the Curriculum Benchmarks, Experiences and Outcomes which you may want to look over

    Brilliant video. I have a question though. Do Scottish schools (primary in particular) have prescribed textbooks by the government? At what grade students start to carry textbooks issued by the school and tested upon? I come from a country where there is a textbook for every single subject in all grades which is issued by the ministry of education. All students in all schools have exactly the same textbook in their respective grades.

    • @HollieMcRae
      @HollieMcRae  2 роки тому

      There are numeracy textbooks which match up to the first and second level Es and Os but I've not seen any for other subjects. Pupils do not have their own textbooks, they stay in the school for when they are needed. As teachers, we are also encouraged not to teach from the textbooks. Instead, we are only to use them occasionally to accompany lessons

    I grew up with Standard Grades. Had to do 8 subjects and RME. I didn't know at the time but I had specific learning difficulties - dyspraxia and mild dyslexia. How does the CfE address is these issues?

    • @HollieMcRae
      @HollieMcRae  4 роки тому +1

      Ametrine Moon the equivalent of standard grades falls within the ‘senior phase’ in the curriculum for excellence, which was not discussed in this video. The curriculum doesn’t set out what to do to assist those with learning differences, it is at the discretion of the school/teacher and the training they have received

    Hello there! As a graduate from Brazil who had an experience as an exchange student in Scotland (Aberdeen more specifically), I found these facts about the Curriculum very interesting! I didn’t have any experience with primary-levels or high school education but in university I think the system is really well-designed and functional. I just have one question/curiosity: as someone who grew up inside that system and it’s now teaching it, do you think that it has actually worked? From a theoretical point of view it seems wonderful but I am intrigued as to how realistic all those principles are. Thank u! 😘

    • @HollieMcRae

      Matheus de Carvalho Santos I’m glad you enjoyed the video! The curriculum for excellence was introduced then I was in p4/5 and at that point, I wasn’t really aware of the ‘curriculum’ and how I was being taught. I was just going to school and getting taught by teachers. Teaching it, however, there are obviously advantages and challenges but then again, I don’t have anything else to compare it to when teaching

    Brilliant video! However, I have a few questions.
    An Undergraduate course in English for 3 years, Masters degree in English(for 2 years) and B.Ed(Bachelor of Education around 10 months).
    1) Would it be enough to be eligible for Scotland? Or would I still have to do PGDE?
    2) Do I have to do PGDE in the UK only in order to be eligible? Or is it okay to do it in other countries if available and still be eligible for Scotland?
    3) Do I need to do any other courses aside from PGDE?
    4) Are there any scholarships available regarding PGDE for people not from Europe?

    CfE cannot be implemented in Scotland. Economic inequalities in Scotland are huge and school attainment gap is a big problem. CfE is a vision which ignores the economic and social problems as well as class issues. The children of established middle class will continue to perform well under CfE. Without solving housing problems, economic problems, social programs, CfE itself will not improve education in Scotland.
