  • Ok Haunt Fam, so you've seen the rams horns laying on my workbench for months. Now is the time to try and mold these beautiful pieces from mother nature!
How in the world do you even go about making a mold this detailed with compound curves and curls? With a brush on silicone mold! Will it work? Is something that complicated even able to be molded? I couldn't tell ya but we are going to give it a shot. We will be using Plat Sil 71-11 silicone from Bity Mold Supply to try and tackle this feat. Special thanks to Loyd Kirkpatrick at Dead End Yard Haunt for suggesting this silicone. As always links are below. Until we meet again...keep it evil!

Way back before the Internet was as advanced as it is now, I remember getting advice from some FX site and one of the things it suggested you would learn a lot from are costly mistakes. You’ll learn from those quickly it said. How very true. From the beginning I was curious as to how this was going to work, it appeared you were asking way too much from the silicone but props to you for going for it. Even knowing as I know about molding and casting and the like, I’m still not sure the appropriate way to approach a horn with such a dramatic shape.

Lol, I blew it on this one! Hahahaha. I think had I used a different silicone it might have gone better but I'm gonna finish remolding them and see if i get lucky. It's a complex curve for sure but eventually I'll get it. I had to show the fail though. No slick editing or fancy lights where every project comes out perfect on this channel. I gotta keep it real!

Epic, YES. Fail, NO. This was new for you and you made something. Maybe the results are not what you had hoped for but you at least did something. Most people don’t get that far. Furthermore you got 2 usable castings and you learned some things. I learned some things as well. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you Joe. I try to be open and honest with the builds. They dont always get the W so I have to show the loses. I'm already back on the horse doing a second molding with different techniques this time so maybe I'll be step closer to sweet success!

demolding tip: use dish soap as mold release (slightly diluted, brush on, let dry completely) then when you demold get some water into it and squeeze it around to loosen everything up. keep adding water and you might be able to pull it out like a corkscrew

    • @CobwebsandCandlesticks

I'm totally gonna try that when I get some more silicone for these big boys! A corkscrew pull out would be ideal.

Also, thanks for posting the vid anyway - it's educational. ...and I was curious where all of the swearing was. I am SHOCKED at how much swearing my projects entail.

I think your gonna need to zipper cut your glove mold. Also, tint you different layers of brush up silicone so you can see where you have been. Helps to eliminate thin areas due to the layers being the same color. If they are different, you know what needs coverage.

It's refreshing to watch someone who doesn't deceive and give off the illusion that the planets align on every build. Sometimes things just don't work out and that's life and ok. I think it is so important, especially with new people starting out that, everyone, EVERYONE makes mistakes and, it's ok! What builds character is failure yet picking up and still moving on. In saying that, seems you could have got it back together? The detail didn't look that bad to me. Damn now I want to play with silicone!

    • @CobwebsandCandlesticks
      @CobwebsandCandlesticks  3 роки тому +1

Not every build works out! Silicone is an expensive medium to fail with but it just teaches a more valuable lesson...dont fock up!!! I'm expensive!!! Hahahaha
Brother Dave you know the Trio keeps it real even when we face plant. If people can learn from our mistakes then we all become better builders. The horns I did get from the mold are ok, they need work but the mold overall wasn't a success so back to drawing board!

Ahhhhh, hey brother I gotta admit I was cringing watching cuz I know how extremely difficult something like this can be to mold! And I was watching your approach with one eye open, haha, but I gotta say dude you really almost pulled it off! But damn, these are tough shapes to do without creating a multiple piece mold! The mold sock might actually work though if you used a silicone with way better elongation properties like Dragon skin or something similar from smooth on? Those are silicones designed for puppet skins and can stretch like crazy with a high tear strength! Otherwise you might think about breaking this down into a multiple piece mold!? Hit me up anytime my friend if you ever need any mold tips, always happy to help! But seriously nice try man, you were so dang close! Cheers😄👍

I am all ears Steve!! I've never touched dragonskin yet. I'm sure starting with rams horns was probably shooting my self in the foot, lol. I've already started the second thin coat on the second molding. I'm gonna do multiple thin layers and maybe just thicken just the last one before the jacket. If I jack this attempt up I'm gonna be all up in your ears lol. I. Sincerely appreciate the help!

I am.actually half way through the molding process with 2 coats of silicone on them 7 or 8 months ago. Because I waited so long I'm probably gonna have to pull it off and start over with fresh silicone but this time with Dragonskin silicone!

@@CobwebsandCandlesticks I would love to see the end result. I think I put too many coats of silicone on. I could not roll it off the horn as I also made a wall for the hard casing so I would know where to cut the mold. I ended up cutting right through. Please post a video when you do this process. Your video is the ONLY one I can find on the internet about the process

    • @CobwebsandCandlesticks

@@verushkavanjaarsveld550 so your very first coat of silicone should be brushed on into the details. Your second and third coat should be thickened with a silicone thickener like thi-vex or tin-thix. I always do a 4th runny regular coat not thickened then move onto a shell mold around it. REBOUND 25 is a great brush on silicone by Smooth On.
