    SSTGT HANDY did an excellent audition. When I was with the 215th we didn't have such an audition. I wouldn't have gotten into that unit. For me, I got in, and learned, and became more. Hopefully, I was remembered.

    SSGT Handy, I know this video is years old but I am glad to see you made the audition. Were you a re-class or did you initially start out as an army musician?

    Sounding great! I’m hopefully auditioning soon for the national guard and I’m a little nervous. It’s nice to be able to watch others to calm my nerves.

      How did it go?

    • @chelseareneeG
      @chelseareneeG 4 роки тому +2

      Gabe Vargas I messed it up cause I was super nervous. But they told me to retry after some private lessons (since I’d never had them). I’m close but not quite there yet.

    I’m an Army trumpeter myself. I served 15 years Active and am currently in the Reserves as a bandsman. This is the old AMPA audition process. It has been updated and they don’t require as much. Overall, good playing. A lot of missed notes, rushing and lack of dynamics. I’m a firm believer that as an Army trumpeter bugle calls should ALWAYS be perfect...WITHOUT any fracks!!!
    Donna Lee is a tough jazz standard. I’ll give you that. Could use some work. Again, overall good playing but as far as your audition score... I would give you a 18 at best. I’m not trying to be mean in my comment just realistic. They are extremely strict when they grade musicians for the AMPA. And since this was an ALC audition, back then you needed at least a passing score of at least a 24 to achieve course standards. If I remember correctly the new updated AMPA requirement is lower. Anyway, just my opinion on what I would score this audition. I’m a Staff Sergeant and have been playing trumpet professionally for 25 years.

      Ok but who asked?

    • @josephhandy2283
      @josephhandy2283  3 роки тому +4

      Hello. Just for Clarity..... That audition tape got a 26. And it is correct that the new audition is different but the bugle calls are the same. My most recent score was a 32. I don't think they're as critical as you say.

      @danstine5446 3 роки тому

      @@josephhandy2283 Maybe so. But in my experience they were extremely critical.

    Hey, I’m currently a clarinet player in high school and I don’t consider myself that great but how hard are the pieces you have to play during auditions? And would it be smart to get a college degree first instead of straight out of high school? Thanks!

    • @josephhandy2283
      @josephhandy2283  Рік тому +1

      The songs you choose for your audition don't have to be very difficult. Choose songs that display your playing strengths and make sure you are really comfortable with the piece. In my opinion I don't think you need to get a degree first. I would suggest taking some lessons with a professional who can advise you on the best way to approach your audition and go for it!

    Whoever ordered this review needs to be counseled and demoted. This man is purely proficient.This is not a Army Band audition, it is clearly a Proficiency audition to keep him in.

      @@josephhandy2283 Good for you! you worked hard to get where you are! Anyone who knows about playing the trumpet knows that this instrument can be described in one word "unforgiving"! Every day you don't play is a day you go backwards. 45 year music teacher. Good luck and keep on playing that horn and making people happy! You sound great and very polished.

    How do you join the army band? Do you have to go through boot camp?

    • @josephhandy2283
      @josephhandy2283  3 роки тому

      Find a military band that's close to you and call their office. They may schedule a time for you to come observe a rehearsal and speak to someone about joining. You can also find a recruiter and they will walk you through the process. Basic training and AIT are required for all bandsmen. It is very challenging but after basic is over things get much easier.

    • @evanbradley2790
      @evanbradley2790 3 роки тому +2

      You'll have to audition on your own tuba, but while in the bands, they have tubas for you to rent. Typically, people have their own concert tubas. They have sousaphones for you too.

      I think The Airmen of Note (Air Force)started using hip-hop vocalists in the last few years. Army probably also has some in at least one of their ensembles.

    I swear if he had touched that spit valve one more time...... 👿 Empty it once then leave it! I'm not going... Damn, he just emptied it again!... So I'm not going to trash the guy, we've all been there. The tone isn't bad. So I thought you auditioned be fore you enlisted so why the fatigues or... Will you quit with three spit valve?!?!... Or was I mistaken about when you audition?. Does anyone know if he made it?

      Current members are eligible to audition and change MOS if they make the cut.
