Since getting into football in 1993, I'd never really had the chance to have a REASON to hate Pitt. Kinda like Penn State never had a reason to hate WVU when they still played every year.
Pitt was either a speed bump, or we sucked so bad, it didn't matter.
But, this game gave me some motivation to name my turd before I flush it now. "So long, Pitt!" .

I had mad friends who had already called and made reservations at the Sheraton in Nawlins and had to cancel. Pitt didn't beat us; the team beat itself. Then he made a logical decision in taking the Michigan job with more money, better AD, more prestige, better recruits, and the whole 9... I hated on Rod big time at first, but as I've gotten older, I completely understand why he did what he did.

His mind was elsewhere, but I don't think the national championship game. Lloyd Carr had already retired and Michigan was looking for a new coach. Rich Rodriguez wasn't going to stick around for the NC game. If it was, he'd have stayed to see West Virginia spank the Sooners, something everyone thought would go the other way because of the coach situation. I think that Bill Stewart will do a good job with West Virginia, though. But we will see.

He had something good, but left to take a chance on Michigan, a team with a completely different culture in a completely different style of conference play.

Pitt is academically and athletically a better university than west virginia easily. the basketball program is in a rebuilding year and still competes, and the football program is on the way back to its prime again. Deon Lewis is gonna rock the Backyard Brawl next year.

To me, here's what happened. A few phone calls were made and the rest is history. The BCS wanted LSU in the title game instead of lowly West Virginia. Rich Rod left because he knew he would never contend for a National Championship at West Virginia.

He would use these other schools for leverage to build his program! He made WVU great and wanted paid for it. Wanted better facilities, wanted to leave the big east cause he saw what was coming....! But know let him go cause WVU is too cheap to keep a real coach! Then just a few years after the man leaves. Bring in Dana Holgorsen.... and give him everything Rich asked for... Alot of really dumb commenter comments Sports brings out some deplorables who write before they speak.
This was a really good team that had a really bad game. They ended up humiliating Oklahoma as a huge underdog in the Fiesta Bowl a few weeks later. They had just throttled Connecticut who had beaten Pittsburgh by 2 or 3 touchdowns. So, the outcome of this game still leaves people scratching their heads.
Had they beaten Pittsburgh, they would have been a favorite versus Ohio State in the championship.
For the haters and deplorables, they beat Georgia, Oklahoma, and Clemson in major bowl games. They also neat Georgia Tech and North Carolina in 2nd tier bowl games during the Pat White period.
There are "blue Chip" and ESPN darling schools that have not done anything close to that. But, sports is political like everything else.
Do your research before spouting nonsense.
This might have the best team that year. It was a shame, though beating Oklahoma by 3 touchdowns was some consolation.
They lost at home as a 28.5 point favorite to a 4-7 Pitt team. They obviously weren’t that good.

Some power rating systems based on score differential still rate WVU as the best team that season. But you can't lose to a team like Pitt and make any real argument for being national champions.
