Cuttlefish, The Best Pet Cephalopod?
Вставка
- Опубліковано 3 жов 2024
- Cuttlefish have got to be on the short list of the coolest animals on the planet, though they are basically aliens. They are super intelligent invertebrate masters of camouflage. They are cephalopods like their cousins the octopus and squid, but I would argue that they might just be the best pets in that group. But is the cuttlefish a good pet? And is it the best pet cephalopod for you?

“Cuttlefish are not fish and don’t cuddle” -Clint’s Reptiles
If you get into what animals are named, like half the names are bad and wrong. I'm still annoyed with the fact birds are technically lizard hipped dinosaurs due to phylogeny, even though they definitionally have bird like hips. And then the stereotypical saurischian hips, don't even look anything like lizard hips.
@LaumiRez "Killer whales" Orca dolphins are both whale and dolphin, All dolphins are whales but not all whales are dolphins. Red pandas are the original panda, that got the name panda First, panda is from the Nepal language meaning bamboo eater/eater of bamboo. "Panda bears" original names before "Panda bear" was spotted bear, Bamboo bear i prefer this name, even in modern China wear they are native there Chinese name translates as Giant bear cat not Panda.
@Jordon Carlson With the cuddle part i believe Clint was JK. The word cuttle comes from the old English word cudele, meaning pouch/Sack, referring to the ink sack.
proof that if you discover it, you get to make up whatever name you want
@LaumiRez killer whales are whales. Dolphins are a kind of whale.

I've spent a lot of my life around saltwater creatures. I used to scuba dive with my dad and have had a saltwater aquarium for about 10 years. I'm glad that you discussed a lot of the important basics of caring for a saltwater system- all of the people I've talked with that didn't have extensive experience didn't always know that you have to use RODI (basically totally pure) water and mix it with special ocean salt, and all of them were surprised to hear that copper kills basically everything in an aquarium. When I have to treat fish with ick and other diseases, people wonder why I have to set up a separate tank instead of just treating them in the main tank. It's because copper is highly toxic to everything, especially corals, which I have in the main tank, and the copper treatments that you can get for your fish are definitely going to kill anything that isn't a fish in your tank.
A lot of people don't think about things like this and cycling a tank before impulse buying a fish or something similar. Again, I am glad that you brought up a lot of the basics about saltwater tanks instead of just getting people hyped up about how cool cuttlefish are without explaining any of the basic care and setup they'd need.
Anyone notice the fish get scared when he yelled "POP on over there!" 4:58
Yeah, I laughed as well
Am I the only one captivated by how quickly this channel's diversified from just doing videos on reptiles?
As soon as I saw this video I watched and read everything I could about keeping saltwater tanks, cephalopods, etc. Ten months ago I'd only ever had fresh water tanks. I bought all the stuff, an RO/DI unit, protein skimmer etc. My cuttlefish eggs hatched about two weeks ago and I currently have about 8 baby cuttlefish and several more eggs that look about ready to hatch. This has been the coolest project I've ever taken on and I can't thank Clint enough.
Watching the cuttlefish "walk" with two of their arms, the rapid color changes, waving arms above themselves like if a tiny elephant was a snake charmer, catching live shrimp with their tiny arms they shoot out like a frog tongue... they have been so enjoyable!
I want to have some so bad, I would spend so long at their tank in the aquarium because they're so curious and like interacting with me/different things I show them through the glass! Do they recognize you?
@@Snowstar837 Yes they definitely did! One in particular that outlived the others. It would start blowing water out of the tank, waving his arms, doing anything to get my attention as soon as I walked into the room. Very awesome!
My wife and I are bringing home a Ball Python today thanks to your wonderful videos! Thank you!
I'm so glad we could help! That's a great choice :)
Name it Clint ! XD
Joking, but still xD
A friend of mine has a pet ball python, and thanks to him, I've started to actually find snakes to be surprisingly cute
So I don't have reptiles, couldn't accommodate reptiles, don't really want reptiles. Yet I enjoy watching almost every one of Clint's videos. I also think about this every time. Yet here I am lol
Well, good thing it's not a reptile this time xD
I think that even if you have no interest in owning the animals these videos are fantastic to watch for the pure educational value. I love watching Clint's Reptiles, Kamp Kenan and other reptile/animal channels with my nephew as he is as crazy about animals as I am and Clint is particularly good as he just has so much information and he makes that information accessible for all ages from my nephew (6) right up to "grown-ups" like myself (a bit older than 6 lol!)
9 months later i wonder... Is that still true?
I just saw that Clint wore a blue tie to an aquarium. It's just great how he coordinates this stuff!!
The tie, not aquarium. Although, that's pretty neat too.
You're very observant :)
4:59 When Clint scared the fish in the aquarium behind him by saying “POP on over there”. I was wondering whether that aquarium was green screen this also confirmed that it is not.
Or maybe some well timed movie magic...
I do not own a reptile, but you have no idea how much this channel made me appreciate them. I've had so many misconceptions about these wonderful creatures and their care. Please keep doing what you're doing. Your admiration for these animals is an inspiration.

As someone planning on keeping Dwarf cuttlefish in the far future, thank you for making this video!
It's just an opinion, but I used to want a pet octopus until I saw My Octopus Teacher. Everything in that film, plus the fact you need to give them puzzles and interactive environments or else they lose motivation, means they're way too intelligent to justify housing in anything but the most expansive and engaging environment possible. If I were rich, this would definitely be a fun hobby.
Yay Cuttlefish! While doing my masters thesis at the Gothenburg maritime museum and aquarium i loved to look at the baby Cuttlefish they were raising in the back. They were adorabe, if sometimes hard to spot.
"that would turn an alive cuttlefish into a dead one" don't know why that was kind of funny.
Cephalopod nerd here... one of the two main suborders of octopuses actually DO have a shell (of sorts). These are the Cirrata, as opposed to the Incirrata which you showed. Cirrate octopuses have a small internal shell and strands/hairs (cirri) on their arms, and look even MORE like a crazy alien than Incirrata octopus. Great video as always though mate, can't wait for that shark content! :D
Had a friendly group of these come up to me whilst scuba diving a couple of months ago and put on a display. Super cool things.

nice job, i like this guy. I encountered these snorkeling a few times. They will study you, just patiently waiting and flashing colors. It's so incredible to swim with them in the ocean
Never thought of having one as a pet but now I want one! I found one while at the SE coast of England as a young child. I cupped it in my hands, it was tiny! So cool though, especially as it turned blood red in my hands. I quickly put it back and it turned to the colour of the sand and shot off at an amazing speed and puffed a few clouds of ink as it went. Amazing experience and better than the enormous crab my dad was trying to pick up (he got pinched several times I think).
Sounds like an amazing day!
I once scooped up a cuttlefish at a beach at Chincoteague island. My adopted son had lost his glasses in the water and I was doing a futile task of dragging my hands across the sandy bottom in the general area. The water was looking gray and mixed as it was a fairly rough surf. I felt something in my hand and eagerly brought it to the surface. It was a cuttlefish. Its color at the time was a deep, mottled gray. The funny part is that I knew I had something alive but when I saw its eyes, looking back at me with some sort of intelligence, I reacted like a little girl and screamed and threw it back in. I still wonder if it told its friends about an alien abduction and how the strange alien made a loud shriek and threw it far away. Lol
@@jkishhabi I love chincoteague.
Had some family in the military living over there and one of my favorite memories of the place is the time I was kayaking in the salt marshes about fifteen feet away from the wild ponies.

You should do more aquatic things maybe "Reef Aquarium, the best aquarium?"
I like that idea a lot!
Something I've always wanted to to if I ever get into aquariums is a artificial reef theme, like the wreck of the titanic. Their has to be some cool stuff you can do with that premise but I have found nothing online and only seen it in a few sand tiger/ nurse shark tanks in aquariums.
Just did my AP bio presentation on the immune system of cephalopods. The common octopus was found to have actually developed a humoral response where a protein will bind to a pathogen to alert their hemocytes to consume the pathogen. It was so interesting, because being invertebrates they don't have an adaptive immune response, but they have developed a very similar mechanism despite being so phylogenetically different from humans.
A video on jellies would be really cool! Also, I seriously nerded out when you made the head-foot joke

I would love to hear more about there intelligence. Great video!! Cephalopods are MY ABSOLUTE FAVORITE ANIMALS.
Cuttlefish is my favorite marine animal, together with the Dolphin. They are both so unbelievably smart and majestic!
(Well, unbelievably smart compared to all other non-human animals. There's obviously an abyss between us and them)
That could potentially be debatable in the case of cephalopods. Mostly because we don't know how to test their intelligence effectively, which is unfortunate. And also because they have evolved so differently to us. Our last common ancestor lived about 400 million years ago. So it's been a while.

The plural of "octopus" is "octopuses." It is not "octopi," because it is a Greek-derivative word, not Latin. A direct translation would be "octopodes," but that form is transformed into the form we are more familiar with in every other case, so "octopuses" it is.
The plural of "octopus" being "octopus" has no etymological standing.
