You must have been listening to Radio 3 at lunch-time, because I too heard Panufnik on the radio - in my case Sifonia Sacra - and thought I'd try some out this evening. :)
I have heard all the available recordings and this seems to me the most convincing, holding its own against the original Menuhin/Panufnik recording. Ebullient use of drama and tempo in the first movement, very tender and poetic lines in the second. Real understanding and humour and again masterly use of rhetoric and tempo in the last. The concerto has a recurring mantra-like character and it can easily be misunderstood as repetitive and boring, when really it should be meditative and entrancing. Thank you for this insight and for the service to this composer. Panufnik mentions in his book "Composing myself" that Stokowsky while playing his works used unexpected tempo variations to very convincing effect. They do it here again.
My exposure to Panufnik while going through the racks of the now-defunct J&R in NYC, and the joy I felt from such a random exposure, looms large in my feelings that we've lost a lot with the retail conversion from brick and mortar to online. I've bought a lot of Panufnik since then, but there's no real brick and mortar outlet for me to support. It's like I'm paying the beast that killed the good.
