Skaven252 - Beyond the Network (beyond_the_network.it) - Bejeweled II Music / Visualization (1080p)

- This is a song in Bejeweled II, called Beyond the Network, by Skaven252 (Peter Hajba). I really like this song, so I made a visualization based on the pattern data of the song, in 1080p.
This song on The Mod Archive: modarchive.org/index.php?reque...
And there is a remastered version, which probably sounds better than this one: skaven252.bandcamp.com/album/b...
I modified Schism Tracker to make it dump the time, the row data, and the volume of each channel as it exports the song, then constructed a visualization from these data. I used HTML5 Canvas to generate each frame as a PNG file, then convert these files to WebM. The intermediate file took ~174 GB :P. The color of each note shows the velocity of the active voice on that channel.
The audio is rendered in Schism Tracker from the .IT file, and is not altered, except the looping and fade out at the end.
0:00 1. Beyond the Network
1:05 2. The Journey Begins
2:50 3. Rain of Lights
4:18 4. LightStorm
6:22 5. Sea of Amorphity
8:46 6. Masked Intentions
11:54 7. Routinoid
14:24 8. Tunnel Society v2.0
18:24 9. A New Beginning (intro 2)
18:55 10. Silent Conquest
21:31 11. Schein
23:46 12. Choose and Contemplate
25:46 13. Breathing Love
28:27 14. Jewels of Denial - Ігри
Do you still have that modified version of Schism Tracker by chance?
I left the source code in an old MacBook from 8 years ago and didn't upload it anywhere. Recently I dumped the hard disk and the source code has been recovered, and now released. github.com/dtinth/2012-beyondthenetwork-visualization
@@flicknote Thanks! :)
wasn't expecting to see you here
holy shit its twitter user the essem
I find it hard to believe this was produced in 2004. Skaven was decades ahead of his time and world class. Criminally underrated
Bejeweled soundtrack: can listen to for hours at a time.
Candy crush soundtrack: gets irritating after the first 8 seconds.
God I miss games like this. I remember when I first played it on my mom's laptop around 12 years ago, we both got hooked on it lol. I feel so old now.
I found this game way back in 2008. Have been playing ever since. The puzzle mode, the endless mode (am at level 1300+ now). Good old times. Screw candy crush and mobile games.
My mom played Bejeweled 3 and Zuma's though.
I've always thought all those games copied Bejeweled, and correct if I'm wrong, but I think Bejeweled is the original three-matching game of its kind. They even tried to create new ways and gems to play, and some are cool ngl, but Bejeweled's simply better even though the play is so simple.
@@danielnu389 maybe not the first of its kind, but the first to have an established franchise! And it's funny how there probably hasn't been any other Match-3s that implements a complete change in its gameplay other than Bejeweled Twist. It's usually just gimmicks that are added. PopCap was able to create a completely different play style for a Match-3 game even before the games of the Mobile Match-3 Monopoly era, which are quite literally just copies of one another, with no creativity whatsoever.
The sad thing is that Bejeweled Blitz has actually changed its instrumentation massively since the Bejeweled 3 era and it massively resembles generic OST music from the likes of Candy Crush while still keeping the same melody. It sounds so off.
this retrofuturism gives me live, I remember hacking my iPod video to play this and even tho it worked it lagged so hard, i often left the game on to listen to the soundtrack
Am I the only one imagining a great adventure while listening to all of these?
FrostMonolith you are not the only one
I think of a distant galaxy real far away and it looks amazing
(Imagination)
5 Suns connect through lava flow and the plant binta and zeon both have 5 to 6 ring layer's and there rings cross one an other like a + and the other 7096782 planets in the background all have mysterious colors not invented yet but I call them xoranda, maladiner, vonaconimesticat, melameterimort, galacatonimor,a lasendry, pabis, lagor, fondima, lageretant, lapeezent, anerotimentor, logah, jaman, panor, lageter, lagester,

Uh... wow I just named 7096782 mysterious colors not invented yet...

AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAW!!!! This comment is probably a little bit to long now I sent it... ok then... uh... bye...
Lol my comment😂😂😂
Can I use your idea for something I wanna write for my friends
@@AdrianJBlanco Beautiful Comment 👍👌😂
For some reason, i always plays this while Exploring regions in EVE Online
18:55 And memories of using every hint on every puzzle come flooding back to me... and memories of how much I raged when the full checkerboard puzzle showed up, which had no hints.
Therm6000 Same here! :D
Therm6000 THAT BLUE-WHITE
Therm6000 Now I know I"m not alone!
+FrostMonolith i actually managed 2 solve dat blue-white checkerboard with no solution
It took me so long to pass...
Having tracked a bit myself, the control on the score/pattern is amazing. The choice of samples. How it's melodic and harmonical at the same time. And almost minimalistic at the same time.
Also, few people do arpeggio commands over as many channels.
Mind blown that the bejeweled 2 soundtrack was made by Skaven from Future Crew.
Not just for Bejeweled 2
He worked on pretty much every single mainline Bejeweled game including 1 and Twist
@@luckybeast1234 Yeah, and he even did the Hamsterball OST as well!
A fair number of earlier PopCap games used Skaven's music. In fact, the starting track "Beyond the Network" refers to his song "Network", which was used in Bejeweled 1.
@@luckybeast1234 He also did Razorback Unreal Mix for UT99.
Skaven also composed the music for Alchemy.
I love the transition between Breathing Love and Jewels of Denial.
The wave of nostalgia pouring in. I remember playing Bejeweled 2 so long ago. I have such faint memories of the puzzles, and the endless mode, and the teleportation when you filled up a world. Back when we had Windows XP, and that 3D pinball game... darn, I'm old.
Back when UA-cam was filled with those notepad tutorial videos, "Unregistered HyperCam 2", Windows XP "Bliss" background and 009 Dreamscape... around the same time (2008) I discovered this game.
I love this. My favorite is Jewels of Denial
Breathing love is a freaking bop
The song name, "Beyond the Network" fits the visualization perfectly. It's like you're in a data string that just is neverending. It's an interesting experience.
0:00 beyond the network & 1:05 the journey begins. These are my two all-time favorite soundtracks from this game, I just love the way they made it sound like it almost takes you to a whole new world it's amazing!
Remember when Match 3 wasn't a bunch of micro-transaction filled garbage made by King? Pepperidge farms remembers.
Rain of Lights sounds like chiller Toob Race Hamsterball and Masked Intentions sounds like a variation of the same theme (key signature, chord progressions, bassline/faint melody)
Up to Tunnel Society now and it seems that he really likes that theme
Choose and Contemplate (and the rest of it tbh) sounds very fantasy but with synth type instruments
Now reached the end, too bad it's too short and I NEED MOAR!!!
Bejeweled 2 is one of those soundtracks that you could not hate. It’s very relaxing and also very energetic.
Dude Bejeweled 2 Damn 🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥
Love this, thank you!
This Makes my Day!! Thank You so Much!!
If you watch this on a 4K TV, you'll be surprised
Musical genius encapsulated!
I watched and listened for the whole 30 min. The first time because I found it so mesmerizing!!! I LOVE IT!!!!
Sounds different from ingame
Well observed
It's charmingly beautiful.
This is the proggest video game soundtrack you could possibly hope for.
Excellent.
Masked Intentions Remeands me To Bejeweled Twist
bejeweled 2 and twist are nearly using the same sounds
check out jazz jackrabbit too 2 (made by alexander brandon, the one who helped skaven making bejeweled 3 music)
Incredible
I love it sooooo much..... I like the journey begins, shecin and choose and contemplate
Espectacular!!! o_O
Breathing love is favourite part
Played this game on my iPod touch like a decade ago, amazing soundtrack
I remember bejeweled now
The father (or maybe even grandfather) of CandyCrush
It's amazing how you can use the programing to make a Master piece, it's sounds better and great for writting code specially the track 12 or relax your mind.
this is having a resurgence
Disliking the Schism Tracker rendition, because the filter is not as accurate as from OpenMPT or XMPlay/BASS (the lib that Bejeweled 2 use in-game) and lacks DX echo effect the song uses.
I’ve always thought Rain of Lights sounded badass, especially at 3:53.
Lightstorm and Routinoid are absolute bangers
14:24 Halo 2 Anniversary vibes
In LightStorm, I've been spending hours determining if it sounds like a train track, or a pipe, or a metal banging, or a pan, but i still don't know....
i have this on loop when playing the real game
Everyone who plays the game does ._.
Shiskit I meant the video. If I remember I think the computer that I played BJ2 on didn’t sound as good so I just had the video on loop. Sorry if it wasn’t clear lol
@@T3PP4N oh, I see. Heheh, sorry man
This sounds slightly different because it's using a different software.
I love "choose and contemplate song"
Looks like in behind memory
I'll click 👍
someone knows what music type is the ost?i really love the ost and it kinda remind me of the synthwave genre(and variations) ( srry for my bad english)
tracker music maybe?
Wiwowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowowow Genial
You can still search for the APK, depending on your phone it may or not run. Runs OK on my Pixel 5 in android 13, but for example in my Redmi Note 5 pro with android 9 doesn'r even start. In a Redmi note 9 pro it worked without music but when I upgraded to android 12 it plays normally. Impressive being an app released over 10 years ago. Candy Crush can't hold a candle to Bejeweled 2
is there any interpolation in this video?
Its like a music is same
The longest module... ever.
PrekiFromPoland Imagine the size of this beast... eight entire megabytes. Wowzers.
Converting it to a PCM wave will result in a one gigabyte file :D
PrekiFromPoland Uncompressed? More than a gigabyte, surely! :P
Also, the module is 4.3MB in size.
31 min long
PrekiFromPoland meanwhile I have the file from the games files and it's named BeyondNetwork.mo3 a file from a program named OpenMPT and it's only about 400 kb
On more thing is that this song weights 459 KB in mo3
The whole game is only 53 MB in size, doesn't hog computers' RAM and yet packs infinite gameplay potential. It was already considered quite small at the time, considering that NFS Most Wanted that was released a year after this game, is around 2.5 GB.
Nowadays, you're lucky to find a PC game less than 500 MB. Even mobile games now can go up to 5 GB.
Is there a way to turn this from a module to a midi?
Yes, there is. It doesn't sound nearly as good though. I tried my best, feel free to tweak this to sound better. a.pomf.cat/mxflcb.mid
How did you modify schism to do this?
+PatrickAndFriendsPRO I added few lines of code into Schism’s exporting routine to write the note data, as long as the current playing velocity of each channel, to a file as it exports the whole song.
❤❤❤❤❤Schein ❤❤❤❤❤
great tune, great upload. some effects and instruments are a bit off tho
This is music goes perfectly with weed :O
omg imagine it with lsd
Janne Rinne
That's why feels so good lol
Wat
I found the comment again, after six years I found it again.
(I was the account above me back then)
It sounds a little different here, like some sounds are too loud...
its cuz the game's songs are compressed to save space and therefore it doesnt have such a dynamic depth
19:06 when the number one rip hits you
And they say Dr Wily Stage 1 is the best song to be featured in a sequel game...
Is this what the mysterious MO3 file contains?
Only thing it's missing is 60fps. Regardless, good job! :)
Where’s the sheet music? I rather read the notes while it’s playing.
Is this MIDI?
No. It's a module file. He uses a "Tracker"
Does anyone have the time codes for each of the songs?
-aaa I'd search through it but I'm too much of a lazy son of a 16-bit pixel to care.-
beg harder lol
@@Khunark This comment was from 7 years ago.
I'm pretty sure I was, like. 11 when I posted this.
How did you do the visuals?
I love it!
Instructions?
Think it's an app
Yes, Schism Tracker.
But it looks different here!
@@finalityfran8759 ah, mk
Bejeweld 2 brought me here
probably the resonance is too high.
It sounds off compared to the actual game
I can tell people are just BEGGING to make SiIvaGunner rips out of this soundtrack.
It's a bit too beepy, more than the original soundtrack.
+TheGrandMaster110 This version is exported using Schism Tracker which may not sound like the original soundtrack. For best sound experience, I recommend buying the OST! :)
***** Thanks for the explanation. It's still good nonetheless, great job!
+flicknote wait so you re-created this masterpiece on Schism Tracker software? I've always wondered how someone would actually go about trying to create this soundtrack.
the schism tracker does not support VSTs, which are usually used to give certain instruments certain effects such as echo. there is an echo effect applied to some of the instruments in the original tracker files. OpenMPT will play this module just fine though as it does support VSTs.
@@andrewsercer9538 no he didn't, he simply used Schism to open and play the original tracker music.
This version of my favorite song sounds horrible 😒
Well, it's because the begining part is from the iOS/Android version of Bejeweled 2
Man I only use to play this game because of it's music. 🥹
