I know this may sound strange but I’m so glad they allowed the girls to choose their own dolls. Some parents feel the need to pick a doll the same race as their child. I have seen it in other stores here in Canada. One little girl she was about 4 years old, was forced by the mother to choose a black doll. The little girl kept saying I want to brush the hair and the mother forced her to buy the doll with tight frizzy hair and the little girl was crying and because she cried the mother told her she’s not getting any doll. Instead of saying anything I used my daughter as an example so maybe the mother would over hear me saying pick the dolly you like. Here’s one you can comb her hair, or this one has curls but you can still buy a head band or barrettes for the dolly’s hair. It’s important to teach your child about their culture but let them also learn about other cultures as well. 💙
Representation is powerful. It has been proven that kids pick dolls based on their ideas of beauty and they grow up with those if it is not instilled in you at home.
I agree. There's nothing wrong giving a doll that resembles them as a gift but if you say it's going to be your choice let them make their choice. Give them the other doll for another day. Let them have variety. And yes appreciate many cultures.
