Hello and thanks for the comment. You can continue to get flushes as long as the substrate has nutrients and you avoid contamination with bacteria or moulds. Each flush will get smaller so it's a matter of whether you think it's worth the work. I will go for three flushes probably and then I will put the spent straw into my garden as mulch. Might get some more mushrooms popping up in there, will see!
I never did have contamination, but then again blue oysters are really vigorous and colonize fast so probably not as susceptible. If you get contamination I probably would throw out the substrate and start again. I plan to try king oysters this fall because they are top fruiting mushrooms so I'm hoping for a better size flush. Hello there, sorry for the late reply but this question got lost. To be honest I was disappointed with the blue oyster monotub. We did get mushrooms but the flushes weren't really worth the effort. I tried pots but then you need a humidity tent or garbage bag to keep in the moisture. When I did more research it seems blue oysters aren't top fruiting mushrooms. Apparently king oysters are top fruiters and they will grow on straw/hardwood shavings. So, my plan this fall is to use the monotub with hardwood heating pellets and king oyster spawn. Hopefully that will work better. The search for an easier method goes on! I keep you posted!
Nice! How many times can you re-hydrate and harvest? Is it a function of the nutrients in the straw or lifecycle of the mycelium?
