I have watched JD Vance for a long time. I read his book right after it was published in 2016. Whenever I have heard him speak, I have a strong feeling of insincerity. It is like he tunes into what people want to hear and adjust his speech accordingly. in the beginning when Trump was a longshot, he spoke one way. Now that Trump has power he speaks another way. You can’t fool all the people all the time, which will be his downfall.

A narcissist like Trump would not seem to have any real forethought going on or a "vision" to continue when everything is about him. I feel like it was primarily 1) an attempt to solidify the base in electorally relevant states, 2) have a VP that will be appropriately obedient (unlike Pence), and 3) he likely does see his own squalid image in Vance and is drawn for that simple reason
