- Join our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan for people who love and support our veterans, service members, and their families. It has info on a significant event in military and/or intel history, a funny military joke, an update on a current event I'm following, something I'm doing that week in my life, a book I'm reading, a look at an upcoming interview, a reflection on a past episode and more.
Today we have a unique episode where I (Ryan Fugit) share my own combat story as SOB Tactical founder and retired Delta Force Sergeant Major John “Shrek” McPhee interviews yours truly.
Do not be fooled, however. Although John helps me tell my origin story growing up overseas, and going on to be an Apache helicopter pilot and CIA officer, we hear more amazing insights from John’s career as well.
In this episode, John and I talk about combat, losing friends, growing up, and swapping stories about our experiences as a pilot and Delta operator that many outside the profession have never heard...such as ‘flying the bag’ and the ‘Mr. Goodbar’ test. John even takes a moment to put on a sweater that used to belong to Saddam Hussein.
I hope you enjoy this wide ranging, real, and whiskey-filled interview as much as we did.

Who else wants ten more episodes of Ryan and John? Such great chemistry here!!
Right!?
Yes Please! Haha!
I want them to just do a daily show :)
@@LeftyRC Absolutely!
Awesome duo
Great great stuff. They could deff make a show happen.
*JOHN PULLS OUT A SADAM SWEATER*
John: “I wear this on Christmas Eve” 😂😂😂
Ikr like he casually has Sadam Hussein’s sweater
I’m waiting to see him in the hat in Target on a Tuesday....
Shrek: "I got an Air Medal, you dont?"
hahaha
BDE God level power move...
John is like this killing machine and big kid, all wrapped up in one.
I friggin love the Sgt.Major. He’s so hilarious, and such a verified, legit bad ass. This guy has done things in theater that no one else on earth has ever done before. I seriously wish he was able to give detailed accounts of his career. I understand he can’t but damn I wish he could.
This is some of the most fascinating content on the internet. Probably the best Shrek interview ever.
Fascinating 4 sure
True.
I’ve only seen 3/4 with John. This is by far the best one

My closest friend and l met on a ship on our way to Vietnam in 1972. We have been closer than brothers for 49 years now, sharing life and death together. We have conversations similar to this one.
It's easy on the ears to hear younger men's points of view about serving our Country honorably. Thanks
I need a whiskey!
john mcphee needs to co-present combat stories . the to and fro is exceptional
Agreed. He has so much enthusiasm and has so much common sense. He and Ryan mesh really well - they're a great team.
This is just awesome. I thought to myself, "man, John should do an interview on your story" and here it is. Well done and thank you for your time guys.
oh wow, I never expected to find you here, I love your videos by the way
If you haven't seen part 1 check out! Both of these guys are legends!
@@3User Thank you :) Ryan has a great channel. I must have watched all his videos by now.
@@Montweezy I have :)
@@SurvivalRussia if you like this channel then you should also check out mike ritland's podcast and the cleared hot podcast
He ain’t lying, mission planing in aviation is slow. All that changed when we moved in to JSOC compound and lived amongst all the teams. Going from working out in the gym, or playing Xbox to been wheels up in 15mins. Nothing short of the best time of my life as a new private from 12thCAB attached as a door gunner for their CH47 asset and logging in over 600+hrs of combat missions with the best in the world; can’t ask more of life after that. God bless all of our past, present and future warriors.
We love John,thank you!
I’m an Infantry Sgt that deployed to Afghanistan. Awesome interview. Made me think about getting ahold of my buddies. I’m bad about it. Jumping in Normandy for D-Day would be a dream come true.
Absolutely one of the most entertaining things I have ever watched in my 50 yrs on this planet!! We definitely need more!! Well done!!
I watch a lot of UA-cam and this is without a doubt, the best segment I've ever seen. Instead of an interview it felt like I was eavesdropping on two old friends trading war stories over a drink (which I guess, technically I was). Ryan, your ability to extract meaningful information from a target subject has clearly followed you beyond the CIA. My background is corporate America and the Silicon Valley and your comment at the end was not lost on me. I have no doubt that if you and Shrek created a training program that packaged your skills and applied them to the boardroom it would be wildly successful. Regardless of what you decide, please consider a round three for this series.
This should be a full time podcast with you two. You two would kill the podcast space just sharing your experiences
By far the best video on YT.. John just wanted to be an airplane mechanic and ends up one of the baddest, most laidback MoFos around with the best stories that he tells so nonchalantly
The best interview ever on Combat Story... Glad you brought back the SOB for more entertainment!
Shrek is realy special and brave, he went alone in recon in dangerus area.
He did hundreds of those missions
sneaky like a fox
Thank you for serving! God bless! I just lost my brother who served in the army. Love you! Thank you!
John is an absolute legend. His personality and genuineness is intoxicating.
Ok this is gold! Thank you both, I really love the special episode.
Instant classic interview. Every second was gold.
The back and forth on this was amazing! So entertaining to listen to both of you guys. 3rd time needs to happen, for sure
You two guys have the best chemistry I’ve ever seen in any interviews. Both videos are the best interviews & talking I’ve ever seen. Let’s make this a regular thing.
Honestly the best interview I have seen to date. I loved every minute of it and would have watched 10 hours more of it. Ryan you did an amazing job man. Both of you are legends in your own right.
You guys took it further. Thanks. Seriously thanks! Keep taking this even further please, it's that good. Best in the game by a mile!
LOVE THE CONVERSATION TODAY!! Full of gratitude for you two dudes for your valiant service, stories, candor, and phenomenal humor.
I listen to some of the most popular podcasts and you two have the juxtaposition, chemistry, stories and respect for each other that would make a world class podcast. You've both got to do more of these together. I was rivited, informed and so happy I stumbled across this podcast.
The actual, real deal, back and forth conversation was incredibly satisfying and enlightening. 3rd installment needed!
Probably one of the best interviews to date. Fantastic. Awesome to finally hear your story
Absolutely the best podcast I have sat through ........Thanks !
This is so awesome, what a time we live in to be able to hear these stories.
I've watched every Combat Story Podcast- this episode for me was THE BEST. Thank You Sir, Thank You CSM.
I love you guys, y’all are the Real deal. I love the way y’all are so easy to listen and learn things. Great Job!
this episode is awesome as was Round 1. love your story ryan and also love john's. There needs to be a part 3. Thank you both for your service to our country.
These two together are my new favorite dialogue. Refreshing to listen to the humility they have compared to all the current ex military podcasts
NO WAY! I'm fired up for this one. I've been hoping you'd share more of your story, Ryan. So cool!
Appreciate it Lance!
John seems like the kind of guy who casually did Ranger course just for fun😅
Absolutely great podcast! Hope John comes back for part 3!!!!
He's so funny the way he details his stories. His expressions and chuckles during his stories makes it even better! He acts like somebody everyone gravitated toward because he's the life of the party! I could watch a couple hours of him each day! 💯
Shrek low key going hard on Lone Survivor story haha
Bro when he was talking about the bronze star and he went out by himself and snatched up a guy and the lone survivor guy had a whole team and couldn’t do it I was like ohhhh shit the rivalry is real haha mad respect for all Special operators wild ass stories
@@wiley8976 Tier 2 is just not on the same level.
He talked about it in another podcast. The lone survivor story did have holes in its story and a lot of reports contradict Lutrell's story.
@@metalloproteases Yep, it's a lot of bullshit I bet. I know the "rescue" wasnt much of a rescue to my knowledge.
@@operationNOBO really? I’ve never heard that. I thought they spun up assets from all over the place for that rescue? Do you have any links I can read?
John and Ryan, thank you for keeping our country safe and doing everything you’ve had to do.
Thank you for sharing stories of what its really like and hearing the in-depth stories of the detail things you guys did makes me want to support you because now I know how hard you have worked. It’s easy to support you guys with knowing what you did. So thank you on the behalf of Central South Dakota. Pump out more
Man I have heard some amazing stories about John and now after listening to him he is a amazing guy yes you will always be remembered you guys are Appreciated big time and my family and friends
I could listen to you guys all day long. Episode 3 please!
Another great podcast and I think the two of you are a great team together. Looking forward to the third episode and hopefully more!
What a great interview. I was pleased to hear your side as well. Nothing compares to the mission and that team of folks we served with. The big money may draw you, but it won't keep you. Excellent work. Thank you.
We need more of this…Cant wait for the next one.
EPIC!!! Please do more together!!! This made my day!!!
Listening to this brought me back to Iraq and Afghanistan and totally understand some aspects of missing it. Had a big smile on my face listening to round one and two and cannot wait for ROUND TREE! 🖐🏽 from Netherlands.
These are GREAT talks. I like Shrek so much I took a carbine class with him. He is as genuine in person as he is on screen. A true American Hero and one hell of a guy.
Ryan is such a thoughtful, humble, and considerate person. Wish we would’ve got a chance to hear his story.
Oh lord please please do another 10 episodes, these 2 are totally captivating, it’s hard thinking of any other interviews that absolutely grab my full attention the way these have, you are both great story tellers, I would watch you 2 for 24 hours straight given the opportunity, with bathroom breaks and meal preparation being the only time I’d pause it, like for real, I love both of your podcasts separately, so to have both of you on one podcast is amazing to me, ok enough rambling, great podcast!!!
Will happily sit through a few more hours of these dudes chatting. Loved it
That was the best podcast I’ve ever watched
Great interview. I loved it.
I’m waiting for part 3! These conversations are great!
You guys have great synergy, thank you for both of service to our nation.
You guys have excellent chemistry together. You could EASILY have your own podcast show together. John is such an imposing and intimidating force, and you are much more reserved and softer spoken. You guys compliment each other perfectly. Well done.
Definitely need a Round 3, y'all. 👍🏼
100th episode is all J Shrek
Best I've seen anywhere!
I could Watch these Guys everyday, and being a Vet makes it all the more Special to hear........🤝🏾🇺🇸💪🏾 Thanks a MILLION for the Stories John and Ryan. And THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE TO OUR COUNTRY.......
I honestly did not want this podcast to ever end!
John needs to write a book on leadership. I enjoy Jocko, but John resonates so much more with me. He's the team leader I'd run through a wall for.
More laid back and realistic, intense when it's required.
Californian vs. Illonois personality types.
These two chats you’ve had are outstanding. Should take it on the road , but the best quote is about the jumper “I wear it on Christmas Eve . Outstanding. Thanks
Great work! I can relate a lot with both of you guys. Thank you for a tour of real life experiences.
Amazing episode, can’t wait for the next episode
The rugby conversation was a fun surprising relatable talk. It's a blast to play, I agree.
We need a round three... And then a regular podcast. This was outstanding, just like your previous interview.
This was epic. Thank you both.
Thankful for these videos/ conversations!!!!
Hey man - thank you so much for this. I’ve only found your work recently with the Tom Satterly interview, which was outstanding. These with John McPhee have been so eye-opening, so interesting, and so easy to listen to. I can’t thank you enough.
Great conversation-thank you veterans.
Watching this channel has caused me to reach out to all my old Ranger buddies, and it's just been super fun. Thanks in large part from listening to The Sherrif's RIP stories.
One funny note, John "yeah you can't get a medal in the Unit" also John "Yeah I got an air medal".
Again... Epic podcast, Ryan. Great job as always. Love, love, love this. Please setup more episodes with John. I also really liked your story, Ryan! I wish I could buy you a beer and listen to your story!
Incredible please have John on as much as possible
Watching the both of you go back and forth was awesome. I definitely grabbed some bourbon early on to adjust. SOB is a trip and you are very calming to listen to. Thank you, Gents! 1*
Most interesting interview I've ever watched! We need more on a regular basis
I say yall can do this at least once every month and I promise you I'll listen to it.. Not only that I will make sure I send it out to everybody else that I know to watch it.. I've enjoyed many of your guests but this one has been a special kind of fun
As an Iraqi I’m happy that guy was there and watched the whole thing it’s awesome funny and definitely learned a lot
Man, this is such good shit. I love watching John drink and tell stories, just has a good energy. It's crazy how down to earth some of these guys can be despite being at the top of their craft
This should be its own segment- too good!
Thank you Ryan, for these interviews. As a civilian, who reads and studies military history and world events,I find It’s really fascinating for me to observe the differences in attitude between one vet and another. I am really interested in the human and emotional side as to how the vets deal with all the killing and unpredictability of shocking situations they’re faced with and being there without any degree of comfort or familiarity. Thank you. I wish that the millennials I teach were required to hear these podcasts and write essays on what they are hearing. You are providing a great historical and behavioral service for us civilians.
Just listened to this. So badass, best one yet!
Amazing stuff, every minute was worth it!
Absolutely amazing.... Have seen 1, 2 and 3 (Even with it's slight flaws) and they are the best I have seen... Thank you both!
This guy is the real deal! No bullshit, always straight to the point
That was an awesome fvcking conversation! Thank you!
Loved the first interview and the second is just as great! Can't wait for more from you guys and appreciate all that you're doing 🙏 and yeah, we still are listening haha
Had another night filled with those terrors, real tough, but waking up to both of your mugs staring me in the face drinking whiskey made me smile. This is great, thanks for the freedom back then, and thanks for the laughs today, Shrek/Ryan!
Edit: Guys, I’ve learned a lot from both of you. I would love a regular chat. I would also love to see Shrek take Ryan to the range!
So cool. Ty both.
Keep em coming. What a thrill.
Great conversation. Round 3 needed!
Absolutely superb guys, thank you
So pumped I found this podcast yesterday. I’ve already listened to 8 episodes 😅
John and his whiskey fascination cracks me up!
This is my favourite guy in the world I can say that! Late at seeing this episode obviously but I could watch and listen to this guy talk all day long , super smart guy ! Talking about John , Ryan also tho super smart and these guys together I can tell have a good time just telling story’s ! Awesome to see !
keep em coming.
great to be a fly on the wall for these conversations and personal stories.
Thank you both!
Thanks brother!
Cheers mate! Loved it! Thx for sharing your stories.
cannot like this enough. thank you both for your service!
It’s so awesome to see a delta guy & a cia guy just chillin , have a conversation like it’s nothing - absolutely mind blown !
May Allah swt bless , forgive & protect the both of you .
Thanks for creating this pod cast Ryan. I have watched/listened to most of the shows, many multiple times(VanSant, Schreck, Tom Satterly, Beau Wise to name a few) I laugh at Schrek's initial interview has over 1M views, and the 2nd is at 85K. 2nd is better! The stores and insights you share here, have helped me to grow in my own life. These stories need to be shared, more people need to hear this. Thank You.
Everything you guys talk about applies to everyone and everyday life as well. Love the genuine real discussion about tough stuff
