2/2/25| Matthew 10:16-33| Sheep among wolves | Jesus Saves Bible Church | Jim Mudge |
1. The warnings of Jesus.
Matthew 10:16-23
Behold, I am sending you out as sheep in the midst of wolves, so be wise as serpents and innocent as doves.
They will deliver you over to courts and flog you in their synagogues, and you will be dragged before governors and kings. . . They will hate you for my name’s sake. When they persecute you in one town, flee to the next.
2. Don’t expect better treatment.
Matthew 10:24-25
A disciple is not above his teacher, nor a servant above his master. It is enough for the disciple to be like his teacher, and the servant like his master.
3. Be fully assured, the Lord has your back.
Matthew 10:26-33
So everyone who acknowledges me before men, I also will acknowledge before my Father who is in heaven, but whoever denies me before men, I also will deny before my Father who is in heaven.
4. Do not have false expectations.
Matthew 10:34-39
Do not think that I have come to bring peace to the earth. I have not come to bring peace, but a sword.
Whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me. Whoever finds his life will lose it, and whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.
5. Rewards.
Matthew 10:40-42
The one who receives a prophet because he is a prophet will receive a prophet's reward.
The one who receives a righteous person because he is a righteous person will receive a righteous person's reward. Whoever gives one of these little ones even a cup of cold water because he is a disciple, truly, I say to you, he will by no means lose his reward.
6. Opposition from the Jewish Council.
Acts 4:1-22
The captain of the temple and the Sadducees came upon them teaching the people.
They were greatly annoyed because they were proclaiming in Jesus the resurrection from the dead.
7. Peter and John before the Council.
They asked, “By what power or by what name did you do this?”
Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit replied,
“By the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead-by him this man is standing before you well.”
8. The believers prayed for boldness.
Acts 4:23-31
Psalm 2.
Why did the rulers gather against the Lord and his anointed?
They prayed, “Lord, look upon their threats and grant to your servants to continue to speak your word with all boldness.”
9. They will hate you and accuse you falsely.
Acts 6:8-15
They charged Stephen of speaking blasphemous words against Moses and God.
They falsely charged him before the high court of speaking words against the Temple and the law. For they falsely accused him of having said that Jesus of Nazareth would destroy the temple and He would change the customs that Moses commanded.
10. Stephen's defense to his accusers.
Acts 7:1-60
He repeated his teaching about the history of Israel from the Law - the first five books of the Bible.
He quoted from Amos and charged them of rebellion against God just like their stiff-necked ancestors. He charged them with the murder of the Christ. The Righteous one.
Conclusions:
Jesus warned his disciples He was sending them out as sheep in the midst of wolves.
They will be delivered to courts, flogged in synagogues and dragged before kings and governors.
When they are persecuted in one town they are to flee to the next.
Conclusions continued:
They should not expect to be treated different than Jesus.
Whoever confesses Jesus before men, Jesus will confess before his Father in heaven.
Whatever one gives for Jesus’ sake will be rewarded.
