I feel bad for her having to do that pool scence so many times. She had a chest infection. She was very sick. Her doctor prescribed medication and at least one months rest. Although, no one on set listened. Poor girl.

They knew when she undressed that it was the scene that would sell the movie and be on every magazine cover. They wanted it done to perfection, as did she. That is not a scene to feel sorry for her about. It's a scene to be cherished, of Marilyn Monroe in all her glory.

@kitty Tonic Marilyn really didn't care about Money at all...She voiced that she just wanted to be 'Wonderful'...and devastatingly Wonderful, she was!! And for the Record, Marilyn herself would do take after take after take to the annoyance of her Directors until she felt it was good because she wanted things done her way and not be dictated to (It was something that she felt strongly about thats why some said she was difficult to work with, but then she was more Magical than all the other Hollywood Actresses (George Cukor the Director of this Movie said this!!!)

@kitty Tonic Yes indeed Kitty 🙏🏾👍🏾! You are so right. Her background was different from most people around her so she didn’t fit in and was indeed very shy. She felt rejected from a very young age; being moved from Foster home to Foster home. As unreasonable as it was, when Robert Kennedy (rightly) decided to end their affair, the feelings of rejection reared their ugly head once again and she felt used so she became extremely angry! All-In-All such a moving, sad outcome ultimately 😒

Nope, I personally think the director just wanted to be a pervert but even then there are other factors.
-Marilyn was often late to set
-Marilyn was high off of drugs (prescribed by her doctor or not. I read somewhere that she had a gallbladder surgery and had to take about 3 weeks off and then she had ended up sick with severe sinusitis)
-Fox was running out of money due to the fact that this and Elizabeth Taylors overly expensive Cleopatra was being made at the same time.

Spending so much time in the water may have given her pneumonia... maybe that’s why she spent so much time off set, taking time off or arriving late... it’s easy to film a naked woman in a pool, but a frail person is more than likely to become ill... no one ever talked about that.... An old friend of mine is an award winning leading serious actress in U.K. In her very first TV drama shoot she said it was a nightmare. All she had to do was exit a car, and the second shot was pick up an old-style phone. She said it never occurred to her in advance most of her life would be these kind of shots and not the big dialogue scenes. They did so many takes on exiting the car she became so self conscious she finally fell out! The next day she apparently couldn’t pick up the phone naturally or elegantly enough and she was shaking so much there was talk of a stand in doing it. She was so self conscious of giant shots of her hands she started wearing gloves. Plus it was all shot out of order, scripts hadn’t been completed and she had no idea why she was doing any of this. In Series 3 they told her she had always secretly been a lesbian! It’s not as easy as you think and it’s not just about knowing your lines. Marilyn wasn’t great on remembering the lines but she absolutely understood the camera, lighting, emotion and the level of performance that would work in the finished edit. On those she was matchless.

Poor Marilyn, in 'Something's Got To Give' her stutter had returned, from her childhood. It still doesn't add up, that she got rehired to continue shooting this film until its end, her and DiMaggio were going to remarry, her career was on the up, she was due for her second wave of success. She'd recently got a higher paying contract for less movies. And all because she knew too much about state secrets, they made it look like a suicide.
Also what does she have in a sealed box that is so valuable and/or dangerous, that we all won't learn of its contents until the 1st of Janurary 2039?

Everybody in comment section talk about MM... But what about the greatest musical dancer in Hollywood of all time ? I mean Cyd Charisse... she was just marvelous actress here, too. And what about Dean Martin... -the funniest and the coolest singer from the Rat Pack ? Amazing and classy man indeed.
Sadly enough George Cukor -who by the way was two time not specially successful in directing Judy Garland in her epic movies- The Wizard of OZ- he was dropped and replaced by Victor Fleming, but George was instrumental in choosing the final Dorothy Gale image, her pigtails and ruby shoes including, and A star is born-1954 version... too long and some boring scenes... let alone James mason pick for the leading man role was very awkward to say the least.
MM was a work horse but the greatest and most exploited female actor in Hollywood history was by far wonderful Judy Garland.
    The rest is history.

at 17:58 theres an interesting moment I have a few theories about whats being said:
someone off camera (a producer I think) says something like "Don' you think she's scare of it?" presumably about the humor is the scene, hearing that she seems to say in joking disbelief "Scared of the humor" almost like wow they think I'm afraid to be funny.
someone off camera (a producer I think) says "What do you think shes scared of?", she overhears and chimes in with an answer to his question "Scared of the humor" referring to her fear of pulling off the situational comedy and the fear of getting laughs for the wrong reasons.
I use to think they were saying "Doesn't she look scared out there" and her reply was "Scareder than human" lol which is obviously not correct.
Anyone else have an idea of what going on and being said? I think the second theory is the best

I can imagine how painful it was to do multiple takes for the same scene ! I would lose interest and go blank face after 3 takes ! She had to do it again and again , it wasn’t fun and literally nerve wracking

All of these big studio movies from the 60s are just celebrations of the expanding wealth of American society at the time. People who'd survived the depression and war simply couldn't believe how good they had it and they wanted to see other Americans enjoying the wealth of boats, big houses, pools, big cars, and fancy clothes so they felt permission to do so themselves.

I feel so bad for those kids trying to shoot that scene getting yelled at. Marilyn must have had a hard time shooting with kids, since she couldn’t have any of her own.

Yes, Monroe was the adult and could defend herself, but those poor child actors were surely intimidated by the director. Not enough people are saying "those poor kids" - they're sympathising with Marilyn instead..

It would have been a charming movie, and certainly a hit, but whether it would have put the studio back on its feet in those pre-"Sound of Music" days is debatable. It's too bad there's no footage of Marilyn and Tom Tryon together. You can tell George Cukor hated those kids, who to be fair weren't exactly actors.

I find it peculiar that after two months, they offered her $1 million to come back and three days later she dies!
    Sure makes you wonder🤔🤔🤔………
    Footnote:
Anyone noticed that her voice was different in this movie? It sounds more normal and it might be her real sounding voice.
