A primitive man went out in a thunderstorm to challenge God. He got hit by a lightning bolt and yelled "YOWEE!" Vowels weren't invented yet so they spelled it YHWH. ~ Mel Brooks
ah, yes, the age old: What's the difference between a Christian and an Atheist? ... The Atheist has _actually_ read the Bible.
@Theseustoo Astyages Yes, Stalin and Mao certainly did. 😐
@@stefanlaskowski6660 Neither was an "Atheist." Stalin was raised in Russian Orthodoxy. Mao, a budist/confucianist.
Perhaps a bit of searching before you make a claim.
And atheists do care about the truth. As seen here in this video.
Apologetics can overcome many atheistic arguments from science , history , philosophy and other branches of knowledge....is not as simple as many think...
How do you explain natural nanotechnology in all our cells without using imagination and Just so stories...
@@ivanivonovich9863 you denied communism is an atheistic regime because Stalin was raised Orthodox.??
Mmmm.....think better....many actual atheists were raised christians....so they can not be counted as atheists....faulty logic..
@@ivanivonovich9863 nope
..many like to change history to agree with naturalism and atheism...history of atheism implica denialism of hard empirical data and hiding contrary discoveries against atheism...Hitchens never hide fine tuning of the Universe...he said it was the best argument against atheism.....
Christians, will ask a non believer, You should read the bible. I would say - I have. This is why I believe that the Atheist argument is the most accurate.
"JUST READ THE BIBLE!", as mentioned in the vid, "Why do you think I'm an atheist?" "Buh, buh, bu..., millions have read it and have been influenced by it." "Yah, it influenced me too."
You should debate these people. I'd like to hear your opinion.
Christians tell me regularly, "Just ignore the old testament." I figure they haven't read it, so they can't defend it, or they know it doesn't support their version of a loving god. I bring up they should ignore the ten commandments, they get offended.
At a church I often attend (friends go and when they nicely ask or if they are having a hard time I'll go to support them) the pastor there has a "read the Bible in a year and you get a free dinner." Thing with him. I (along with some friends) read the whole thing together. What I got out of it was........very different to say the least
What are you talking about
@@klopcodez the ten commandments are given to Moses by God ie Old Testament. If they want to ignore O.T, then the commandments are out too.
@@shosty575 Seems straight-forward enough, who would have a problem underst ...., oh, never mind.
Ignore the OT, except that verse in Leviticus that they think says gays are evil. That one they like a whole lot
Really enjoyed this one which was thought-provoking and filled in a lot of gaps for me about some of the atrocities in the Old Testament that I was previously only superficially aware of. Josh was a really interesting guest so I'll forgive him for dissing one of my favourite TV show heroes, Monk! Monk was always proved right because at the end of each show he had found the evidence that demonstrated beyond reasonable doubt how the murderer committed the crime which is the polar opposite of how evangelicals think.
I love watching Monk, too. Great series.💯

The Friendly Atheist has been reading from Genesis. Pharaoh with an army of chariots pulled by horses when all the livestock in Egypt had died ...
Nah... couldn't be that... could it?
I asked the headmaster of my high school (who was also the youth pastor) where Cain’s wife came from. Not as a gotcha question; i had noticed it myself and wanted to know. I was told that despite apparent contradictions like that, the Bible is definitely literally true and to have more faith.
I love this kind of content.
Thanks again for your interview
Funny how the apologists final argument is "because the bible's says so". Yet they don't know what the bible says. They think believing in it and knowing its contents are the same thing.
@@raysalmon6566 "Places known only from scripture". I don't believe that's true. Ancient Greek historian Herodotus knew about Babylon and historians since, have believed it exists. What 19th century archaeologists did was find the actual location. You can write a work of fiction and mention real places. It's still fiction. Nineveh is another case: Modern Nineveh still exists, and the ancient city ruins are located right across the river Tigris. So it makes no sense to say we only know of it from scripture. The Western world has known about Nineveh from non biblical sources since the middle ages at the latest. I don't know what WFA is, but I'm quite skeptical of their assertions.

“In Larry Gonick's The Cartoon History of the Universe, the narrator suggests that YHWH might instead be pronounced "Yahoo Wahoo." The narrator is then shown being struck by lightning.”
Mario is showing us the true way!
I love reading Gonick’s cartoon histories. Funny and accurate! The most entertaining way to learn history, next to “Oversimplified”. Have you read the cartoon history of the US?
Well the word Jew itself is clearly derived from YHWH. In modern Hebrew it's pronounced "Yehudi" but in Arabic it's "Yahudi" pronounced "Yahoodee". So "Yahoowah" could indeed be a valid pronunciation...
11:19 This is so true, especially when it comes to English pronunciation of foreign names. Like the actual Dutch pronunciation of the Dutch post-impressionist painter who became influential only after his death. His name was never "van go," like a party vehicle that goes. But the actual name is so difficult for English speakers to pronounce (or more accurately, they're unaware of how the name is actually pronounced) that it has gotten completely mangled. Some local musicians I know called themselves "Go van go" even though the band was named Go van Gogh.
Between them Dr Josh and Aron showed just how much cognitive dissonance god believers and apologists suffer with, it's really sad people will try to justify the evil things their none existent god supposedly has done.
What a great talk!
Great stuff man! Big fan.

Thanks for this!
I stumped my 4th grade teacher on religion when I was young. I asked her how she could be a science teacher, teaching us all about the dinosaurs that lived millions of years ago and her religion says everything was created 6,000 years ago by a god. Pin drop, extended time, and then she said god has a different time clock than we do. I knew at that time it was the same as the tooth fairy. I actually spent time trying to believe because I thought somehow, some way, something must be wrong with me. Nope, I am fine. You must throw away everything you learn, from English, Math, Science, History, sight, hearing, etc, etc, to have faith. Religion is a fear based money maker because god broke his magic wand and can no longer print money.
Definitely buying that.
When Matt says that you don't claim what the bible says. You just go for the questions.
You don't ask "you actually believe that?". You ask "why you believe it?".
I had a crisis of faith and sought out answers in the Bible. I sat down and read the Bible from the beginning. By the time I got to Leviticus, I was no longer a Christian
I had a JW tell me that the virgin girls were kept because they would not have any VD...
But that really would only ever matter if the barbarians were going to encounter them sexually. Didn't they already have enough wives? Were they themselves completely free of VD? Surely not, so why should some more conquered people even matter? Doesn't make any sense.

The Jealousy Ordeal....Numbers 5:11-31. This is how those who wrote the Torah envisioned the types of laws and practices of the people who were ancient at the time they were writing. "Digital Hammurabi"...so..."Learn To Code"? BWAHAHAHAHA!
I know the bible says that no scripture is up for interpretation. Yet we have countless apologists, priests, preachers and bible thumpers interpreting it non stop. So what are we supposed to make of that? 2 Peter 1:20 is pretty clear.. "knowing this first, that no prophecy of Scripture is of any private interpretation..." Or is that being misinterpreted? Would an omni-everything being not communicate better then this? Don't shoot the messenger this is a direct bible quote.

Leon Festinger, Henery W Riecken, and Stanley Schachter When Prophecy Fais. Jason X Bible Problems: Contradictions, Factual Errors, and Evil Moral Teachings in the Bible. Steve Ebling, Julia Bristow Holy Bible-Best God Damned Version-The Book of Moses: For Atheists. These a few books that I have been studying to help me debate these fundamentalists but they are so deadlocked in their beliefs to the point of lying. We had these creationists interrupt our Geology club meeting in college and had to get them to leave and lock the door. We went to one of their films by Ken Ham and debated them after the film. They had us black listed to any of their future film events. Yet we had a hard time getting them to leave us alone. Yes, we get bullied but we bullied them right back. They have the political clout due to their rich parents giving huge sums to the college.
I'd like to read the Bible from front to back but I'm an atheist and I don't have the religious upbringing to really know what is significant to christians. Any sources you'd recommend to use while reading to give historical & theological context? Would the Atheists Handbook be helpful for that or would I just be confused?
@@steph7614 You need to study real history. The Church had its beginning in Rome. Constantine made it the dominant Roman religion. Yes, the Atheists handbook will help. But nothing is better than real history. Jospeh Cambell is a good start with the Power of Myth.

The old Testament would be hilarious if there weren't grown up adults who think it's worth basing their lives on.
Maybe in the U.S. I mean, religion is everywhere there. In Europe, you don't need to read the bible to become an atheist. You are born an atheist (not believing in any god), and then you have a fair chance to have 0 religious adults in your early life, and then you remain an atheist. Reading the bible is still entertaining, though. Mythology is fun

@@god_is_gay_for_satan the story goes that after God gave Moses the law, Moses carved it into tablets of stone. He came down from the mountain to find everyone else had made their own God to worship in the meantime. Moses was so angry that he smashed the tablets on which he had carved God's law.

I was raised CofE then a Jehovah's witness, one of my first 'doubts' was because they were so pedantic over taking the bible literally (6 days was *six days* etc) and teaching us it was of utmost importance to speak to/say gods Name.
And yet they all admitted that 'Jehovah' was the best *guestimate* of the tetragrammaton YHWH, no-one really knows how to pronounce it but that's okay. THE most important thing was to say gods name and yet it's okay to guess it! Hmm.
Then I started taking historical geography - let's talk about 6000yr old Earth and the flood shall we. 😉
Interesting video, thanks.
Its interesting to follow peoples different paths to doubt. My favourite counter apologetic is that nobody in their right mind can choose to believe something... anything. Whereas right in the heart of Christian doctrine, you are given the obvious expectation to treat your adopted belief as personal choice, and one that is predicated on the weight of eternal suffering or reward of eternal joy.
Now I'm no psychologist or detective, but that's emotional blackmail and bribery to except what would nominally be a factual claim on an entirely emotional basis. I call it the 'moral imperative'. Didn't that ever give you pause to question your dogma/doctrine; the sheer fact that it was sold as a personal choice and that beliefs just don't work that way?
To me nothing ever happens to be true just because you want it to, or that you're being threatened or bribed into believing it. How could such antics ever be convincing to a rational and reasoning mind? Yet that's the opening gambit of the Christian doctrine. Didn't that ever strike you as suspicious?
@@skepticusmaximus184 I love how you phrased this. While I cannot speak for anyone else, for me the "choice" aspect seemed perfectly "normal" to my child self, and only recognized as a problem well after I realized I was atheist. I had a very abusive mother who gaslighted a lot and a vivid imagination that was my primary escape; I could "believe" a better safer happier life, well aware of what I was doing and it worked. Considering how abusive some denominations can be (I know adults still terrified of demons and Hell) maybe some Christian children do something similar unaware and grow up feeling that's normal, never actually realizing (or even thinking about) what they actually *believe*. Like being indoctrinated to believe hateful abusive behavior is loving and vice versa. As you said, it's right in the heart of the teaching; indoctrinated early enough deeply enough one might never become aware of one's own emotions and knowledge. Of course, I'm not a professional either.
@@kathryngeeslin9509 Sorry to hear of your abusive background Kathryn. I don't think you particularly need to be a professional anything. The moral imperative seems to speak for itself. Interesting that you didn't recognise the bait and switch, until deconverted as an adult. I suspect many as children and adults alike, are ensnared in the delusion for want of basic reasoning skills. Well... 'want' isn’t quite the right word, since many avoid reasoning precisely for fear of its rational conclusions. The emotional motive can be seen overpowering the rational one. Glad you made it to the other side. 😉
@@skepticusmaximus184 Thank you. It was a long time ago. I walked out on the whole family in 1974, on her in 68-69.
