    Very cool! I was speaking with the Omax guy at a trade show. I told him not to waste his time talking to me, as I was never going to be be able to afford one. He was a great guy and chatted anyway. It's a shame the machines are so darn complex/expensive!
    I didn't know they could remove the draft the cut puts on by using a 4th axis and figured that was just a limitation of the technology.. The guys do some great stuff in that shop and have all the toys to make it happen too. Hats off! Thanks for posting.

    At a trade show over 20 years ago they were cutting wedding cake with a water jet as a handout. It didn't disturb the curls of frosting on the top, and you couldn't detect any wetness on the cut pieces.

    Tom's Autometric looks like it has found a good home. Thanks for the shop tour and the overview of the waterjet. You can certainly see why for speed and cost stamping these parts would be the way to go if you were doing very many.

  • @RGSneaker
    @RGSneaker 8 років тому +1

    Wouldn't it be possible to wash out the garnet material from the tank and re-use it? Maybe like gold washing with a rotating bowl or something, or separating metal shavings/dust with an electromagnet.

    • @nils1953
      @nils1953 8 років тому

      I thought the same, maybe the garnet brakes when hitting the metal?

    • @RGSneaker
      @RGSneaker 8 років тому

      Wouldn't the garnet be selected for its hardness - being higher than that of the metal ?

    • @nils1953
      @nils1953 8 років тому

      Ahh true! Maybe it's not cost efficient draining the water everytime? Well I guess that doesn't make sense.

    • @derKarl_stp
      @derKarl_stp 8 років тому +1

      +RGSneaker from what I know it is a bit complicated... as you have the same issues with grinding wheels that the abbrasive can't be used again it is the same on those systems... sure, it still is there but it is not in the same sharp condition anymore
      to "grind" away material you need sharp edges, now you smashed those things with the water jet onto the metal and this sure takes out the metal but at the same time roundover itself as well
      and if you would be using the same garnet again you would have to clean it... now this is the bigger issue, a lot of heavy material and you would waste a lot of the cutting leftovers as well... the residue can be processed to get metal out again... and bigger companies do that... and by not draining and refilling you save a lot of water as well... but this is what some engineers over here in Europe told me about hydrojetting

    • @RGSneaker
      @RGSneaker 8 років тому +1

      Maybe SMW can try to make an Arduino project that mechanically filters the water and removes magnetic material. I understand that the garnet will deteriorate, but the economical potential lies in how many trips through the nozzle the garnet actually CAN take while still cutting with an acceptable tolerance and quality.

    Is the garnet wasted after the first use, or is it possible to recycle it?

    • @dannooo548
      @dannooo548 6 років тому +1

      In larger shops, the garnet is filtered out of the tank and then recycled. Since it is hard to separate the metal dust from the garnet, it isn't immediately reused.

  • @troutbum8699
    @troutbum8699 8 років тому

    One thing he probably left out is the amount a down time with them. They burst tubes all the time and the seals go often. But then again it may be ours that cuts at 87k psi.

    • @troutbum8699
      @troutbum8699 8 років тому

      +NYC CNC Flow water jet mach3. 10'x6.5' cutting envelope. Down time is bad enough that we have a toolbox full of extra parts. Short of having a new pump on hand, we have at least one of every tube and seal on the machine. It's not if it will leak or go out, it's when it does do u have the parts to fix it.

    This was cool but for the time it took to cut those parts it is so impractical. The parts would be perfect to do on a laser. I could have cut about 8 sets of those parts or more in the time it took to cut that one. Hey John If you want me to cut some out for you send me the dxf file and I'll cut you some no charge. Let me know.

  • @izzy6300
    @izzy6300 7 років тому

    Why don't you Manually nest your parts instead of auto nesting and nest your parts going long ways along x axis so your parts won't fall in the tank so that way you don't have to tab them in and why did it take so long to cut

    Hi mate. That is some investment capital he has got sitting there. How can a bloke make any money out of that. Those machines should be running 24 hours a day. Except for the engraving, I think that a plasma cam is a lot more practical than a water jet, or am I of my trolley in that thought.

      Agreed. Took one look at the shop and thought, "Yeah, this guy is going to be broke in no time."
      Sure enough, can't find an operating business presence two years later. And some of the stuff I've seen posted in the past... Like, why would you hob out massive sections of titanium plate instead of cutting and saving useful sizes? Then complain that it wasted your tool? Several hundred dollars of material and tooling turned to chips and scrap.
