Been considering 360 cameras for several years now, but this is the best review and comparison of actual quality I've seen - by far! I think until the action cams get up to at least 8k I'll be holding off. The quality is just not good enough with less than that to justify buying the camera over a regular action cam. One of your best videos to date ! Well done Mic ! I own a GoPro Max and have been a member of their beta Software group for a couple of years. It's a great little camera for action sequences - especially when coupled with a wrist remote control. I've been really curious about the Insta360 products but time and money took me in the direction of a Qoocam EGO 3D camera ( thanks to you for the great video you did on the QC EGO) I'm glad you touched upon the difficulties dealing with 5.7K video files. It's been one of the biggest frustrations I've had with the GoPro Max 5.7K files. I've just upgraded my computer with a RTX 3080 GPU in hopes that I'll be finally able to play a CINEFORM file - albeit on my 1080P monitor. That is the conundrum with all of these cameras. These high resolution video file formats - above 4K are way beyond the average computer's ability to play them. I'd like to see you do a video on what software and equipment you need for these larger than 4K video file formats. How does someone ever watch these videos given that the average user has a 4K TV - at best. ( My fall back with the GoPro Max is to use HEVC encoding at 5.7K for 360 files - only to have them transcoded by UA-cam into a lesser quality for sharing with others. I can't even imagine what it would take to work with 8K or 12 K video.
Hi Daryll. Sure. What is your budget? If you just want something affordable, go for One X2 with the Dive Case. But you'll have that very large nadir. If you don't want to see that nadir, the most affordable option is 360Bubble, a goldfish-bowl shaped container that can fit many 360 cameras.
Really appreciate your videos, as someone newly interested in 360 they are very useful, thank you! If my primary intended usage is photos for restaurant reviews & street view additions, but wanted to do some occassional road trip video - what would you recommend out of SC2 or One X2? I think at retail price the One X2 would probably still win, but I can get the SC2 for only $220 USD on sale locally, so it's a hard decision...
Thanks Happy Skeptic. It sounds like you plan to use both photos and videos. Based on that, I would recommend Insta360 One X2 because the SC2's video capability is not very good (not as detailed and the stabilization is not good). SC2 also does not have a microphone option. Although the One X2 costs more, I believe you will recover the extra cost and you'll find it very well worth it.
