Nice little project Michel. I started making one of these about a year ago, then I got side tracked with other projects. You have inspired me to pull it out and start working on it again. But, it will be after I get a few projects that I'm currently working on done.
What a lovely non-heavy anvil. I did use a large Russian shaper to flatten a piece of rail with a HSS tool. The chips came off in very tight, blue curls, and they pinged all over the workshop. Regards, Preso
Great video Rusty, I watched the whole thing this time. I need to source a drill press table and a hunk of track now. The Deckel works great as a horizontal machine too. I like your cover on top to keep oil from splashing out.
Great timing, I am just about to start my own rail iron anvil!! All I need is a milling machine - ah well, an angle grinder will have to do. :) Nice job Rusty.
i made an anvil from track some years ago but forgot the bloody pencil!!! i found the flame cut track very hard at times. good job , hope your mate loves it.👍👍
Nice, my dear old dad had a railway line anvil in his workshop, but it was maybe 3 times longer than that one and I had back home in Oz a smaller version made from a piece of Tram Track. 👍
Well done...fun fact for me...i bought almost the same size of rail at the scrapyard two weeks ago...just because it was there 😉 now i know what for... 😂 Thanks!
G'day Rusty. Is that the piece of rail that went missing on the bridge the other night 🌙 🤔 😅 Great job on the Restoration to make an anvil, so your Friend will enjoy himself making lots of noise at Midnight, 😅 Even the Rooster will be to tired to get up at Sunrise 🌅 😆 🤣 Now that really a Pencil, or a small Rolling pin for Pasta Dinner tonight. 😆 🤣 😂 Great job, keep up the good works 💪 👷♀️ 👍🏻
Time 00:45. Drill a suitable hole in it and use it for candles! We sell such on "my" veteran railroad! Some people use a chainsaw to make wooden sculptures.. Joking! To make a flat surface... The shaper. Don't know but guessed "the shaper"..... Joking! Time 05:30. Once made a converting piece, 4 sided to 6 sided. The object was a 4 sided Chrom Vanadium piece. 2 Tin-x coated mils bits cot ruined. A grinder had to finish the job. Then the guys lost it. 2 new were made out of more soft steel... To cut rails a roaring disc machine is used. Drilling holes for the joints are made using cooling liquid and an unknown type of 30-40 mm drill bits. Do did quite some cosmetic work... Thanks for the entertaining video Michel!
Rusti, Kurtis had a 1000 mm Klopp shaper and Matty was supposed to come and rebuild it. But my guess is that he sold it. The Jig Borer is still there. Maybe you can get it. Or better still, the French made milling machine that has the head that rotates to any angle from horizontal to verticle. He's not using either of them. He has now started to be an infomercial channel much like Abom79. Maybe you should get the junkyard where you always find material to sponsor you...???
I think curtis is too busy to have the time to restore and learn new machine, he already have enough work with his capacity so upgrade the shop even more may be not the best for him
My neighbor gave me a gift: the hand-made jeweler’s anvil from the estate of her grandfather, a watchmaker. It was cut from rail, on a bandsaw, and the top was beautifully flattened on a big shaper. It’s a treasure! 👍
My Dad had several of these, as he worked 40 Years @ NSW Railways, Sydney Australia, in Main Workshops, Scrap Rails were converted into these for the Upholstery Staff & Others @ Workshops to have on Bench, as sometimes some metal shaping was required when wrangling a Train Seat or Fittings, How they were made is not something I know, but yours looks at lot more "Designed" & Neat, Flat & Straight with a Stand, Dad's had 4 holes for bolts, Good Work .. Only thing I notice is under spike is Angled, NOT Rounded, but maybe that was for Upholstery ..
@@Rustinox Well not sure it matters, it is just different, Dad used his at home for lots of Upholstery Jobs, but a lot of Cobbler-ling, or Shoe or Boot Repairs, Heavy Leather/Saddle Work... I think it depends on what you use it for but I know it also helped with curving Metal plates before riveting repairs etc .. I should mention another variety, No Pointy bit, but a 8" "Tongue" about width of rail, just for shoe work ...
Hi Michel. Your friends are very lucky indeed. The anvil and pencil are both fabulous gifts and demonstrate your ingenuity and creativity. I also thank you for giving me an idea how to make my own much needed anvil from the same material. 👏👏👍😀 PS I hope Karen and Kurtis donated their unused giant shaper to you. Perhaps crowdfund the shipping 😮🥴
Nice job. I wish I knew where to get a piece of rail. However it did occur to me that cast iron might not be the best base to hammer on as it's known for being on the brittle side. It's probably fine for leather work but for heavy bashing I would make a wooden base.
Hi Michel, I'm surprised the badly pitted base and top surface weren't parallel - probably why 'they' cut that bit of track out and gave it to you to fix :)
In the early part of the video, didn't you say that you were going to make the horn round? I think that having the horn shaped like a cone is an important feature.
A lovely thing indeed ,I'm sure it will be appreciated ............... HOWEVER. Wear PPE when presenting the lady with her gift. helmet , goggles, something stab proof, running shoes, that sort of thing. I'm not a great engineer but trust me I know about ladies.
Always many uses for old railway track. 👍
Absolutely.
Love your "friend". . Reminds me of "Me, myself and I". . oh wait. .that's two friends. . . LOLOLOL
You never have too many friends :)
Everyone needs a friend like that. Karen and Kurtis I'm sure would be happy to send you their shaper ;).
I wouldn’t want to pay for the shipping. But I love seeing the shaper at work
That will be more expensive than just buy one over here :)
Thoroughly enjoyed this! Gifts like these are the most valuable kind -your friends are very lucky. 👍 🇬🇧
Thanks.
Nicely done buddy, your friend will be pleased, thank you for sharing
I hope so too. Thanks Ralfy.
Your videos always make me smile. Excellent!
That's nice. Thanks.
That's a great use for that piece of material - not to mention the old drill press table. You are very resourceful!
Thanks Stuart.
Your friend seems very nice. You should invite him over to do machining one day. 🙂
He knows he's welcome.

Ah yes, the side projects...
Hi Michelle, a great project, your friend is very lucky to have you as his friend. Have a great weekend!!
Try "Michel" next time. ;)
Thanks David.
Excellent job rusty, great video, keep'um coming.
Thanks. That's the plan.
13:25 I nearly spilt my glass of wine. You make me laugh so much.😂
Thanks.
A wonderful gift to make for a friend. Is it my imagination, but he does look a little bit like you 😂 Cheers Nobby
Thanks Nobby.
Enjoyed…your a good buddy and he will be wanting more now from you😂
Thanks Chuck.
You are so kind and thoughtful. It was so kind of you to make your friend's wife a special gift.
Well, it's fun to do.
What a lovely non-heavy anvil. I did use a large Russian shaper to flatten a piece of rail with a HSS tool. The chips came off in very tight, blue curls, and they pinged all over the workshop.

Thanks Preso. But my shaper is Dutch, so...
Thanks for teaching this old boiler maker new skills
Cheers sir!🇦🇺
Nice. Thanks.
good video rustinox
Thanks.
Very nice gifts Michel. Just worried about the train ,when it comes to the gap in the track.😀😀😀😀
Steve.
If you hear something about a train crash, just pretend you don't know me...
I've watched every video in order. Always excited to see a new chapter!
Not sure it's good for you health to watch every video :)

Wow, what a pencil. . Amazing. . Is she hard of seeing? Those will be BIG words. . LOVE IT. .
:)
I love the aesthetics of that! The contrast of the polished top with the patina of the base really looks the part. Great job!
Thanks.
Great job mate
Thanks Matty.
I made myself a similar anvil from rail road track many years ago and although I have a proper anvil now, the little one is still handy for many jobs!
It absolutely is.
I'd love to see Karen and Curtis post you their shaper... nice name drop... haha ❤
Don't think it will happen.
I have one of these that my grandfather made back in the 1920s. Handy little thing, it has one through-hole and one partial.
And it has a story.
Great video again! Keep them coming!
That's the plan.
Great timing, I am just about to start my own rail iron anvil!! All I need is a milling machine - ah well, an angle grinder will have to do. :) Nice job Rusty.

Trainkyou.
I bet your neighbours love you, Rustinox. Anvil looks great. Hope they don't start squabbling over their prezzies....😢
Thanks Tony.

Great idea, I have a piece of rail that I have been using as is, but now I might consider some mods like this!
Go for it.
I love this channel so much.

They also live on the antipode from where I am.
Hah this is right up my alley. I have two hunks of rail and am im need of two anvils of a jewelers size. Great job, really enjoy watching too
Thanks. Now you know what to do.
My neighbor gave me a gift: the hand-made jeweler’s anvil from the estate of her grandfather, a watchmaker. It was cut from rail, on a bandsaw, and the top was beautifully flattened on a big shaper. It’s a treasure! 👍
Sure is. Take care of it.

It will hold just fine. It's not made for sledge hammer use.
Very nice work ! Congrats.
Thanks.
Very nice work sir. I have made one and it took me ages to it’s hard work.
At least it kept you off the streets for a while :)
When machineing cast iron use a vacuum cleaner, best to make a adjustable bracket for the hose 🇬🇧👍.
That's an idea.
@@Rustinox To add to this when turning cast iron on a lathe, have the tool upside down so it goes straight in the vacuum hose, 🇬🇧😎
Hi Michel, I'm surprised the badly pitted base and top surface weren't parallel - probably why 'they' cut that bit of track out and gave it to you to fix :)
Could well be :)
Another Gem from junk, nice build Rusty !
So do we call it a Ranvil ?
Good idea.
how thoughtful of you. don't forget the woman.🤣 nice work again michel. the next time you have to work on hard stuff, reduce the speed and feed
I used 40 m/min cutting speed ans 0,5mm diep cuts. Worked just fine.
@@Rustinox 0.5 mm is quite a lot for interrupted cutting. That's probably why your point broke
Maybe yes,maybe not let´s try.Michel.Yes it works.Thank you.
It works...
Great addition to the shop, I am sure there are a million little jobs out there that will improve with the aid of the anvil. Cheers!
I have one in my shop. I use it a lot.
NICE :)
Thanks.
The rail is worn at an angle because train wheels are coneacle so they will follow the curves on tracks without bucking.
Indeed.
In the early part of the video, didn't you say that you were going to make the horn round? I think that having the horn shaped like a cone is an important feature.
Well, change of plans that didn't exist.
You made her a pencil? Well how in the world did you do that?
It's very easy.
The left guy in the intro looks much much better. Did he have a YT-channel ? 😂😅😊
He's also much younger :)
👍😎
Thanks.
👍
Thanks.

Well, I don't know about ladies.
Consider annealing the rail before grinding or machining.
That will take a lot of heat.
Nice work is your friend trading you something for it or is it just a gift for a brother ? Thanks
Birthday gift.
Hoera!
Yep!
Show us how to make the pencil!
Over here we say "please" when we ask something :)
@@Rustinox Pretty Please!!
Like it,looks great!
