Descensus is their "Deftones self-titled album" moment. Really heavy and almost stresses the "hardcore" in their "post-hardcore" sound.

this was their best album by far. It's a little bit more of a challenge to unlock because it's so much more subtle. Forget everything else they've done and listen with fresh ears and an open mind as if this is the first album you have ever listened to. Maybe that will help.

Man this album has some of their best work ever. I can understand taking issue with the mix, but that was I heard a creative decision on Anthony's part, not wanting to be so prominent and blend more. Dunno know if I agree with that choice, but this album is as good as their best work.

Rites of investiture, dark pools and the title track are some of the songs I love the most in my entire life.

I think the only great track on this record is "Stay". Love the vocals and the addicting riffs on there.

i find the album to be a grower!!..Stay reminds me of an earlier song by them called "suitcase"....similar in pace and tone..i think it's on Violent Waves? and thanks for all the loves!!

Very nice editing. It's a shame channels with much more subscribers don't put nearly as much effort in their videos as you do

try2catchup Thank you for saying that 😊 I'm sure some do, others don't. All channels have to start somewhere though.

You need to listen to Descensus. Very underrated. I thought Violent Waves and Blue Sky Noise were also sorta boring and Descensus kinda broke that mold. But this album was not really for me either. There are some good moments but no GREAT songs.

I really appreciate that you did a review of this album! I'm agreeing with a lot of the points your making. It was mostly boring to listen to besides a few standout tracks (eg Premonition of the Hex, The Amulet), and I there were very few moments in the album that pulled me into the emotions they were trying to convey. It's sad that they have to be compared to their first three albums so often, but after listening to albums like this one, or Violent Waves, all I can think about is everything they did wrong in these albums and how much they did right in their old ones. I wish they could take the production from their first albums and combine them with the songwriting of the newer ones but I suspect that they see that as an artistic copout.

Robert Slocumbe I actually think there were some solid songs on Violent Waves 🌊 But it is still one of their weaker efforts in my mind too. Some bands just lose that special thing after some time. You can really hear it on the structure of their songs, the melodies, the vocals, all of that is toned down and less inventive 😓 Well at least they did leave a string of epic albums, and i'm thankful for that! Thank you for resonating.

Ha, again a Philly band, too bad this album is not that good this time. Nice review tho! I'm going to see these bands soon: Hidden Trails( B) check them out! & Suma ( Sweden) hiddentrailsband.bandcamp.com/releases . And Jett Rebel who is also a huge TR fan, and is trying to come to Toddstock! ua-cam.com/video/wcLH53oHztQ/v-deo.html. Hope you like these suggestions.

I am actually a little bummed out by this album. I love Circa Survive so I still support this, but y'know I think that there's a definite decline in their energy which is probably the biggest attraction to Circa Survive's music for me. I have to wonder if Anthony Green's voice is getting worn at this point in his career because this album just doesn't have what the other albums have vocally. Just my (most likely unpopular) opinion. Still love Circa Survive and still have mad respect for every member of the band.

Amanda Starkey Then we're on the same page Amanda. I remember this happened to Cedrik Baxler Zavala from The Mars Volta during their last album Noctourniquet. He used to reach for incredible pitches with his voice too. But then he just couldn't anymore. They still managed to create an amazing album though. Check it out if you want 😉
