- The count of military personnel for the years 1900 to 2024. Military personnel are defined as troops under the command of the national government and are maintained in a state of readiness for combat. Troops in the reserves (unless mobilized for wartime service), colonial forces, irregular units such as civil defense groups, frontier guards, gendarmerie, and other quasi-military organizations are excluded from this assessment. I categorized (colored) countries into three main groups, each of which currently holds a significant presence in the list, especially during recent years: Muslim countries, Southeast Asian countries, and the remaining nations worldwide.

it's really interesting to see numbers climb up in preparation for wars then drop right after, that makes it also interesting to see which countries decide to keep larger armies right now and the contexts behind those armies.

Yeah, pretty sad. The worse thing is that you can literally pick any of these war leaders and they can write a poem on love and harmony but still they decide to focus on war. Again, it's much more complicated than how we're talking rn. Innocent lives are lost on both sides which promotes the need for revenge but hatred never dies. Even after revenge. I hope we find peace as humans.
6:16 Something is off with the timeline here. The Russia/Ukraine war officially started in 2022 and is ongoing, not from 2020 to 2022 as shown.
If you want to be specific, it really started in 2014 with the annexation of Crimea

Many of the countries represented here did not exist or have armies during some of the years covered in this video:
Sweden was part of Norway until 1905.
Turkey was part of the Ottoman Empire until 1923, and there wasn't a real "Turkish Army" until 1919.
The Russian Empire ceased to exist as a country in 1917. Are you just attributing White Army numbers to the Russian Empire?
You simultaneously show Weimar Germany and Nazi Germany in 1932. Nazi Germany is generally understood to have been established in 1933.
Iran was known as Persia until 1935. You list it as Iran starting in 1932.

The “Soviet Afghanistan war” is a bit of a misnomer, given that the USSR was always giving support to Afghanistan and trying to keep the current elected governments from being taken over by the mujahideen.

The numbers are staggering! The "top" armies have more soldiers than the populations of many countries... it puts things in perspective, eg. Russia has lost more soldiers in the last 2 years than the number of people that live in Luxembourg.
