Does Sciatica Pain Move OR Shift Around?!

  • It's common that people with unresolved back, butt, and sciatica pain describe symptoms that shift, dance, or move around. Oftentimes, pain starts on one side, then it travels to the other side or even upwards into the mid back for unknown reason. To some this is confusing, but if we understand that pain is often a danger signal created by the brain- then it makes sense that symptoms could shift randomly around to different sides or parts of the body without clear physical reason.
And the longer we're in pain, the more random or less mechanical symptoms can become.
Simply put, sciatica or lower back pain symptoms that move around without clear cause are a sign that symptoms are more psychological in origin than physical. And it makes sense...
Discs aren't bulged on one side one day, then reabsorb and bulge on the other side the next day. Arthritis on one side isn't present one day and then clears up/moves locations the next.
Structural problems in the body do not behave in this way.
So, if you're confused about symptoms that seem funky, are jumping or moving around, and it seems like you're stuck chasing them- then this is a sign that your symptoms are more of the mind rather than the body.

Thank you for addressing the mind-body connection! Sometimes I feel like I'm playing Whac-A-Mole with my sciatica pain, and it creates even more anxiety. It does seem to lessen when I'm calmer. I need to learn to chill! 😊

More than 3 years suffering of sciatica symptoms in my right leg , not always with same intensity but always there ( like you describe L5-S1). Really i tried exercices, massage, walking , and really i'm sooo tired to see that nothing work.
All my money goes to PTs and i lost hope . Maybe there is no solution and i just need to accept pain :(

Does sciatica always go down the leg? Because I have pain in the butt and cloe to the tailbone but it never goes down the leg.

    • @drcharliejohnson

@@debcatz8445 hey! sciatica (radicular pain involving the nerve) is characterized by symptoms that are present below the level of the knee into the foot- which travel in a very narrow band, often described as electric, shooting, burning or numb/tingly... and reproduced with stretch of the sciatic nerve (straight leg raise) Symptoms that remain in the butt only are VERY unlikely to be due to sciatica.
