The Simserhof Fort is one of the largest forts of the Maginot Line, located in Moselle, in northeastern France. It is part of the fortified sector of Rohrbach and was constructed in the 1930s as an integral part of the French defensive line aimed at preventing a German invasion. Here are some key aspects of Simserhof Fort:
    Key Features
    1. **Construction and Structure**:
    - Built between 1929 and 1938, Simserhof Fort consists of several combat blocks, entry blocks, and an extensive underground infrastructure connected by kilometers of tunnels.
    - The combat blocks are equipped with anti-tank guns, mortars, and machine guns, designed to withstand heavy bombardments.
    2. **Strategic Position**:
    - Located near the Franco-German border, it was designed to prevent enemy forces from advancing into the heart of France.
    - The fort is surrounded by other fortifications and casemates that were part of the integrated defensive system.
    3. **Role During World War II**:
    - The fort was partially activated during the "Phoney War" (1939-1940).
    - During the German invasion in 1940, Simserhof resisted direct attacks but was bypassed by German forces, leading to the French capitulation.
    - It was reoccupied by German forces and subsequently used by them during the occupation.
    4. **Post-War Period**:
    - After World War II, the fort was modernized and integrated into the new French defense against the Soviet threat during the Cold War.
    - It was decommissioned in the 1970s as strategic needs changed.
    5. **Today**:
    - Simserhof Fort is now open to the public and functions as a museum. It offers guided tours that allow visitors to explore the interior of the fort, military equipment, and the living conditions of the soldiers stationed there.
    - The site is an important testament to military architecture and the history of 20th-century conflicts in Europe.
    Visiting and Tourism
    - **Accessibility**: Easily accessible from major cities like Metz and Strasbourg.
    - **Facilities**: Visitors can see the casemates, combat blocks, command posts, and living quarters. Interactive exhibits and audiovisual presentations enhance the experience.
    - **Historical Importance**: Simserhof provides a unique perspective on French military strategy and defensive efforts during a critical period of European history.
Simserhof Fort is a fascinating example of military engineering and a poignant testament to the defensive efforts undertaken by France during the tumultuous periods of the first half of the 20th century.
