Yes. 100% do NOT forget how awesome the neck pickup on a Jazz bass is. I recently became obsessed with Ron Wood's bass tone from when he was the bassist on the early Jeff Beck and Rod Stewart albums. Yep. Ronnie was an awesome bass player in the 60s before he played guitar with The Faces and then The Rolling Stones. The neck pickup on a Jazz bass with some dirt can very closely nail Wood's overdriven 51 P-Bass tone.

I played one of those gold fender jazz basses back the early eighties in a music store in st. louis, and it was one of the nicest fenders I have ever laid hands on!!!! It was bright and punchy with good midrange, and that deep growly low end, they were not just good looking basses, but played just as good as it looked!!!! They were a limited run,not a standard stock model.they were expensive back then, haven't seen one since then, but would love to have one, that's for sure....

  • @dangracia7805

Was cool to see that video and how Ian went a bit nuts over the Gold 1981 Jazz with maple-neck and white pickups that are in the 70's era spacing (4" center to center).
I just happen to have a 1982 Jazz Bass in Olympic White with a white-bound maple neck and stark white pickguard, pickups, and control knobs (strat-style numbered knobs). I bought it in 1985 when I had gone back to college and was working part time at a music store when some guy traded it in for an Aria Pro II. I bought it because it had the same neck shape, profile, and radius as my 1965 Jazz did that I bought in 1966 and toured with in the early 70's. That was stolen from me along with all my touring gear in 1976 and it took me almost 10-years to find a bass with that same type of neck (60's slim c-shape with 7.25" radius). All the basses I tried before this were just too fat and felt weird to me. Pulled this one off the wall and played it and it felt like coming home. Didn't really start gigging with it again until 1997 because I had 3 kids and no amp.
This bass sounds different than most Jazz Basses due to both the 70's era pickup spacing, which gives it a little brighter sound than my '65 had, and the all maple neck with black dot fret markers gives it great sustain - far better sustain than my '65 with its maple neck and rosewood fretboard had. Mine is in far better shape than Ian's '81. The Olympic White has mellowed to a cream color over the years but there's none of the wear around the top of the body nor is finish checkered at all. It has an S 8xxxxx serial number, which Fender says should make it a late 1977 or early 1978 bass but none of those had binding on the neck nor did the all maple neck come standard on them. I finally dated the bass to early 1982 by the part number on the tone pot. It's a CTS pot that was made on the 4th week of 1982, which is late January. Since Fender didn't keep a large number of these on hand (typically ordered on a monthly basis) odds are it was made within 2-months of that date. Since the control panel had all original wiring on it, 1982 is the oldest it could be. I just love the sound of this Jazz.

From the giveaway this is the bass Îd like to get the most I think. I have got a 83 jazz in white a few years ago. Killer sounding, neck shape was perfect, has the 70's spacing for the pickups. However the neck was too unstable and was moving too much for it, I had the readjust too often to my taste so unfortunately I had to get rid of it, Movers gotta move... I am missing this bass a bit. I agree the neck pickup on these 80's is killer sounding.

Can I ask about early 80’s and earlier Jazz bass bodies? I bought one in ‘85 from a college mate. It was just the body with a non original fretless neck. It was already a frankenbass and I was young so I stripped/ sanded it down to the wood. It was some kind of maybe burgundy or red originally. The neck cavity is shaped like the bridge cavity BUT it’s a bit wider. The pickup cable route is hidden ( not top routed ) . Do you have any idea what year / era of Jazz body I may have? Thx.

That's the quickest way to make me go spend my money somewhere else. Doesn't matter if it was last year or not. Even with those cool basses they had.

Wow, I guess you aren’t suffering from lung disease and still have to quarantine to save yourself. Thanks to anti-masking, I’ve become a shut-in. People don’t care about civic duty, these days.

I’m going to be that guy. If you’re in someone’s shop and they’re nice enough to let you try their very expensive inventory , take off anything on your upper body that could potentially scratch the instruments finish , like a jacket with metal buttons or a zipper, or a back pack with the adjustment clips by the upper horn. I get that it’s unlikely that severe damage will happen but why not get that risk down to zero?
