  • Bondi Beach was impacted by very large waves and a high tide sending sea water over footpaths and onto the roadway.
    Locals ran for cover as waves crashed over the promenade. Waverley council and police closed parts of the footpath to keep onlookers safe.

    What a show! Seeing this incredibly popular swim spot become a tempest is incredible. The ocean really seems like a living being, 'toying' with folks who get complacent. I wish people would take it more seriously, especially those putting their pets at risk.
    We get storms like this on Lake Superior and they are a humbling sight. I can only imagine the amount of erosion this is causing.

      This is just how the east còast beaches of Australia (at least south of the Great Barrier Reef that begins in southern Queensland) move on a seasonal cycle.i grew up surfing in the 70's & there'd be at least 3 or 4 similar m a ssive southerly/ south east swells every winter , when whole beaches would disappear, to slowly return between swells. This was just the natural cycle of the dand (and still is where ever man's interferance is absent, as the only real erosion occurs where people have broken that natural cycle. I've witnessed lakes being closed permanently at the natural mouth / opening tothe sea & even in one case filling with sand and ceasing to exist, except for a yidal trickle òf water due to dredging for silica sand, with Lake Illawarra being a perfect example of man's destruction of his natural environment, resulting in the death of a massive sea grass / fish & pràwn breeding area being wiped out ovér more than a decade until ad a last resort to save a foshing infustry , huge amounts were spent to reopen the mouth resulting in an unnatural opening & a lake that was teeming with fish & prawns/shrimp now being a distant memory. Ssame old same old , nothing mew under the sun.

    I lived literally a two minute walk from Bondi Beach in a dingy two bedroom apartment down a concrete flight of stairs with my soon to be husband and his mate, it was 1979 and from what I can see things haven't changed all that much except the waves are much much bigger at the moment. I miss Bondi Beach sometimes but wouldn't like to be paying for the rent for that dingy little flat now!

    Wow - Thats some serious shoreline run-up there. People don't realize the dangers of wave induced surge. Here in the states in Oct 1991 (and again in Oct 2012 with Hurricane Sandy), I saw this first-hand in FL with the "distant" effects of the "Perfect Storm" off the NE USA (1000+ miles away) wrecked havoc with 30 foot waves on a calm and clear day. And, yes, in my early 20's (my good days) I was one of those "crazy dudes" do try to surf on that! Distance isn't always your friend as "wave energy" sure can "send it" :)

    Is there a specific reason for the waves to be this high?

    • @jb-es5zj
      @jb-es5zj 2 роки тому +4

      its all got to do with the wind when the wind blows across the water it cerates swell if the distance that wind crosses water is very long it maker the waves very powerfull and the stronger the winds the bigger the waves this is a combiation of the two and then you have high tide on top of that and you will get impact onto land

      @@dbn52 it only matters what the fool says if you choose to listen. Cops are there to police laws enacted by a legislative process. There use for any other purpose, particularly on the pretence that its for our safety is a slippery slope to authoritarianism because it leaves politicians and worse, civil servants to determine what is safe and unsafe for you. Go onto your local council office. Look at the person behind the counter and know that that person may be the person who decides what is safe for you.
