Anna, excellent explanaition for trail side mechanics to straighten the wheel. Especially the pencil and rubberband. When I was a young mountain biker with not a lot of money, this method was what I used to keep my wheel close to true. Today, I have a truing stand to get the job done!
0:47 Kinda wrong for the tension. If the rear wheel is not asymmetrical, the tension will be higher on drive side, to pull whole wheel over the freehub body. If the front wheel hub has disc and wheel not asymmetrical, the tension will be higher on non drive side, to pull whole wheel over the disc. I used to think that wheel should be equally tensioned and when I finally put it on the bike, I found that I must release tension on one side to get it in the middle.
Always trying to get more business for the LBS. As long as you can check the wheel for true, centering and that there is no wobble from the axle making it off centre, which you can using a pencil, or even tie wraps on your bike, it's really easy to get the spoke tensioned correctly, or a spoke or nipple replacement. It really isn't that difficult to do this yourself. The only time you need a LBS or wheel builder is when you tacoed the rim and it's so out you can't do it. I build my own wheels, it's not impossible to learn.
If u taco a rim, no wheel builder can true that! Any more than about 0.5-1cm rim out of true, rim really needs replacing. So 'u' or L shaped rim is toast!
@@rupedog you obviously aren't on the ball here are you. If you taco a rim, you can have a new rim put onto your old hub. What you buy an entire wheel every time you taco a rim. Must cost you quite a lot. 🤦♂🤣
I had this happen to my brand new set of rebuilt mtbi 35 rims. Wobble... The Frame & Wheel Tire combo were so tight that when it wobbled And lightly rubbed. Come to find out the first bike shop tightened the spoke to 20... the spokes were DT Swiss racing.. the second shop Trued it up and tightened the spokes to 40 instead of 20 and the problem was solved.
Had to do it this week when a stick went through the rear wheel and ripped three of the spoke nipples right through the Ali rim and also bending the derailleur and the hanger 😭☹ I was able to temporarily true the wheel just enough in order to get me home. The rim then went straight in the scrap bin along with the derailleur and the hanger ☹Oh how I laughed....
Well, pretty sure I ripped my Nip and F'd my rim... R.I.P. to my Rim. Appreciate the advice, but UA-cam made me feel like I could "Fix" my bike and they lied lol like always 😒 lol. I appreciate your advice and content but I have learned my lesson. Off to the bike shop I go 🤟
Remember G T for tightening spokes... The G looks like a circular arrow... Go that way to "T'-ighten... (That's looking down the spoke to the rim) I haven't died yet spoking my own bikes... Maybe tomorrow... My Giant Faith 0 has lasted a couple of years now with a full respoke & new freehub.
Hoping I don't need this vid... but did have a big stick flick into my rear wheel yesterday, locking it. Spoke didn't break, but is slightly 'rippled' . Should probably replace it premptively....hmmmm
Basic physics. Clamp something one end, load it the other and as long as the load isn't passing through the clamp point there will be bending. Look up moment arm and you'll see what i mean. TBH pretty much everything is in bending, you just can't see it.
If you can put your wheel out of whack with regular riding (not casing a jump or hitting a square rock extra hard), then that wheel was never up to proper tension in the first place. 99% of OEM wheels from the factory are in this category.
Does anyone take this woman seriously? If you wonder why I ask this question, go watch her video on cleaning disk brakes. When she said that we should not use automotive brake cleaner because it may have lubricants in it, I lost all faith in her having brain cells. Be careful what you believe that comes out of her mouth.

Thanks for the support, Kevin! It's great how well a pencil and rubber band work for truing your wheels.
A pen and a rubber band is what I use! Awesome! That is a great temporary fix to get you off of the trail!🤘
Thanks Anna. Always detailed and easy to follow.
Anna did a brilliant job!
Anna is a good teacher
Anna certainly is!
Go watch her video on cleaning disk brakes and then tell me again that she is a good teacher.
BEST EXAMPLE ON UA-cam...Thank you 🥰
So amazing I feel like working with you watching from Africa Kenya
Solid and practical advice.
Anna certainly had some great advice in this one! Thanks for watching! 🙌
Very clear explanation Anna, I learned something today
Glad to hear it, Paul! Thank you for the support!
Thanks for the information-filled video lovely lady!
A timely reminder thanks Anna👊🇺🇦
Get them wheels trued! Haha! Thanks for the support!
incredible explanation and tips, thanks a lot!
Nothing worst than needing trail tire repairs. Another great vid 👌

if this is a series, its a great idea.
"Righty Tighty" - as you look at the Tire Tread on the Wheel. Say this to yourself a few times.
find an old rim and practice truing the rim.
I found zip tie better indicator during truing a wheel. less wobbly than pencil.
and more likely to have trailside
Thx! Just fixed my “adult” big-wheel.
This is a great video!

If I'm not mistaken, aren't you turning the spoke key counter clockwise in this demonstration?

Hey! That's so unfortunate. At least you're ok, when things happen like that it can send you over the bars!😅 Time to look for new parts! 😬
Excellent
Thanks! 🙌
Do I need to replace spokes and nipples when changing for a new hub? Thanks!! 😁

Lmao, heavy handed knob
Where do I strap the pencil if I'm putting it on the front wheel
Good.
Does this work if the wheel is going side to side wobbling?
This is timely, I have a wobbly wheel
Buy good wheels and never worry about a wobbly wheel again 😆 pro line 40 bon are solid man!!!!
Not everyone can afford top of the range stuff. Lucky if got a bike anyways as they expensive.

I have a question why do fork bend while comprensing?
Watch slowmotion fork test their fork is bending?

wait anna is back?
Anna never left! Hopefully she's here to stay :)
@@gmbntech oh ok i guess she just took a big break

@@RealMTBAddict i just build my own.
@@RealMTBAddict really? It takes an hour, maybe an hour and a half to build one wheel. You don't have a spare 3 hours every ten years?
@@RealMTBAddict damn. Sorry to hear that
Hello love
Too much tall and it takes not one, but two pencils (one on each side) to do a good job.
Those 'darn pesky' spokes😜
Where's Doddy??? Sorry.
Doddy is still on the channel, but he now shares it with Anna. :)
@@gmbntech Yes I know that. I'm just trying not to be rude.
