This is actually decently accurate. In code the mounted spud gun fires the projectile at an initial speed of between 125 - 135 m/s or 450kph - 486kph. Also, the mounted gun doesn't take into account of the velocity of the object its placed on, (so it assumes its being fired stationary) so you could have placed one on your vehicle and just shot it at those speeds, and if the spud stays with your vehicle, you know you are at the same speed as it.
18:17 I looked in the description of the speedometer in the new legend mod and if you press E on it you can have it output a signal if you go over a certain speed.
Tip: low friction blocks still have friction, and it’s more than you think. If you delete most of them and only keep enough so that every part of your vehicle except the low friction blocks is off the ground you can like triple in speed
@@thestick9078 the guy that I replied to, persun, used to be a big commenter on scrapman’s videos back in 2020/2021. He stopped for a while. I was just making a joke with him cause I saw his comment on this video. As to why it’s ok for me to make that joke, we’re best friends.
Because spud guns have a random bullet speed, some more or some less speed is transfered into vertical motion because of the angle, decreasing their speed a little bit plus the random loss. This is why the spuds flew at different velocities.
I noticed you use the 3 logic gate method for spud rapid fire. However, if you use a timer and 2 logic gates, you can optimize the fire rate, and by hooking 1 spudgun into the timer and 1 into the gate that powers the timer, you can also get perfect alternating fire.
@pascal2085 He did triple logic gate from the very beginning, plus using a timer and 2 logic gates makes the fire rate better for single spudgun as well as double.
@pascal2085 that's possible if the fourth is included in the loop. But at that point, you might as well use a timer because one of the four gates is set to and/or which just relays the previous signal. The timer also allows adjusting the fire rate if you wanted it slower, not that you would in this case.

I haven't watched the whole video yet, but by the looks of it, this wasn't super exact. The method I'd likely use is, first calculate the size of a block, and then place two sensors at a known distance from each other. Using a timer, you can calculate the time it takes for the potato to travel the known distance, thereby having the speed of said potato.
True....but these videos are not so much to show the correct answer in the best way they are more so to see something cool and maybe learn something about the game. Just measuring although effective it whouldnt make an entertaining video for most people. Just my thought.
I'd like to see a video with at least 3 youtubers where you all build a vehicle for a couple different challenges, like a car, a tank, a boat, a plane, etc, but then for each challenge you have to choose one of your friend's design instead. Gotta guess who you think made the best one based on looks!
Face the spudgun firing backwards on the sled. When you reach the same speed as the potatoes' speed you'll just see a spinning potato slowly dropping towards the floor.
This gives me the idea for a Multiplayer Monday. Building a low friction vehicle with brakes. Points awarded for top speed AND shortest brake distance. 3 tries each with adjustments allowed to pistons, bearings etc between each try.
I bet the speed at the end changed because the slopes were placed on the other face. Also you could find tune the speed by slowly removing low friction blocks on the bottom
I would love to see a multiplayer scrap mechanic episode where you have to build a speed sledge/hoover/car and drive with full speed to the end of the map, and who bounces back the furthest wins!
spud guns always shoot at the same speed relative to the world no matter how fast the gun is moving, so it would shoot at double the firing speed relative to the sled.
Day 20 of asking ScrapMan to make a 2v2 video where each team makes a cargo plane that launches a glider one person makes the glider another makes the cargo plane and whoever's glider goes the most far wins then each round both teams get 1-5 mins to upgrade the builds but they cant communicate while building so u have to be very careful with what u change. The cargo plane would launch the glider at a certain point or after a certain amount of time idk what would work better. I think this would be a great video and I really want to see it, keep up the amazing work you make my day every time I watch one of your videos.
It would be epic if you attach a spud gun facing backwards on the sled then when you reach the shooting speed, fire the gun and see if the spud just drops straight down. You will need a second player though. And do the same with rockets
Sadly the mounted gun doesn't take into account of the velocity of the object its placed on, (so it assumes its being fired stationary), so it would actually go backwards, goofy ahh physics
If you can take the output of the speedometer then you could potentially use that to put a speed cap on the sled (I don't know how that mod works though so idk).
A: Why didn't you go down the edge of the map instead of the middle? That way you could align yourself on the wall. B: To go the speed of spud guns you need to use spud power for propulsion, obviously. (Which is assuming that not only does the speed of a moving vehicle transfer to the spuds - which according to other commenters it doesn't - but also that the force gets reduced along with the speed of the spud.)
You could use minimum power thrusters for reverse, or you could have 1 side have an extra block to further match the spuds speed. Or Although not as fun, you can take the measurement of each block and set the spud gun to zero degrees and take the average distance of, say, 10 spuds. From there, take the time it takes to hit the ground to find the average velocity of the spud. Or You can use the speed at which you both passed the spud and the speed at which you started or, in this case, the speed after you crossed the spud gun. Subtracting from your initial speed to your final speed and then taking the time it took to reach your final speed, you can then find your accleration. At which point you can find where you passed the spud. From here, you can dial down on the velocity of the spud by dividing or multiplying the acceleration by the interval of time where you passed the spud and didn't. And that is your spuds velocity. Anyway, I don't know why I wrote this, I guess I just like mathematics .
If 1 side had an extra block, it would rotate due to the unbalanced friction. You could also just look at the code and find that the speed is 125-135 m/s (450-486 km/h)
@vibaj16 don't know anything about the code part. The friction can probably be offset somehow without being detrimental to the acceleration. But, would the rotation to one side be enough to create a spin out or be detrimental to its velocity and accleration in the first place.
You should make a fireworks display. Like a whole show. Its a weird concept because you are making something that needs to break in a certain way. Simple yet interesting
Ohhh good experiment, never even thought about how fast they are. The slight variation in spud speed and direction is why it's really really hard/near impossible to make a reliable wireless logic system in vanilla scrap mechanic by the way, real shame :(
Well, there's the wireless connection glitch, and it shouldn't be too hard to make reliable spud-communication as long as you give it enough room for error
So is there recoil on the mounted spud guns? If there is then that might explain the difference in muzzle velocity. Bearing strength is janky, as everyone knows, so it could be that the firing is making the whole thing wobble at a controlled frequency which is varying the exit velocity of each gun's spuds consistently. I think if you had multiples of the same single gun setup as your control, you'd get a better idea if spud velocity varies or if it's your setup that might be doing that.
I just did the math and a 250 gram potato traveling at 460 km/h would have a kinetic energy of 2000 joules. For reference a .44 Magnum bullet has a kinetic energy of 1400 joules. The scrap mechanic spud gun has the power of a real revolver.
7:00 going frame by frame (on youtube can can pause the video and press < and > to switch frames) your top speed was 1071.04 km/h. and your avatar went outside the world border lmao.

Just put the same amount of thrusters in reverse and forward, and put the reverse on a switch. When you reach the desired speed, turn the rev thrusters on...
I'm not sure what to think about the established velocity range for the spuds. Originally, I thought that the whole point of the spud guns was to be nonlethal, but a potato moving at that speed will instantly mash not only itself, but any other organic matter it collides with. But then, we have also established that Scrap Mechanic doesn't have realistic physics to the same degree as Trailmakers, so I suppose these results are to be expected...?
You could use suspension stabilizer so the vehicle doesn't turn. Also if you match a thruster with the speed the frictiction want's to slow you down, you could cap your speed by turning of the other thrusters.
I was experimenting with spotnet trying to crank up the communications speed. and I did notice that some of the potatoes arrived at different times. bou it is nice to actually see how much difference there is.
I wonder how many people are gonna watch this through, then get a big fat urge to try to find a way to smuggle Spud Guns and Spud Ammo outta Scrap Mechanic and into Trailmakers to get a PvP Advantage...? :P Also, I think it makes sense for them to have inconsistent speeds per shot, cause Spuds are naturally lumpy and non-standardized in shape, sol they're gonna have lumpy and non-standardized way for the Firing Forces to impact them as they're shot out by the Spud Gun. :P
What if you mount a spud gun on the vehicle, start with one thruster, shot the spud gun, but on the same button you activate all other thrusters. Could this work?
This is actually decently accurate. In code the mounted spud gun fires the projectile at an initial speed of between 125 - 135 m/s or 450kph - 486kph.
