I have grown up playing Mario, super Mario world was the first game I have ever played while I varied and played some of Nintendo's other franchises eventually playing indie as well so I've played great titles like Zelda, Metroid, Kirby but I've also played spelunky, cave story the binding of Isaac, shovel knight and other games. I agree that Odyssey is overrated but not by much it's still a great game nonetheless I accept your opinion but saying that someone else's opinion is fake because it's purely based on nostalgia is a faulty claim.
Mario became a success for it being a fun side scrolling platformer which then had a few great 3D games, in each new 3d Mario game there was a new mechanic or idea implemented Mario 64 advanced the 2D side scrolled to a 3D platformer, with an open area for exploration, Mario sunshine brought you to a tropic island to stray away from the location being the typical lava, water, grass, forest, and cloud worlds while adding the f.l.u.d.d. an advance water gun/jet pack/jet ski/rocket.
Mario Galaxy 1&2 which brought you to space making the atmosphere more bouncy and giving small worlds to explore while not adding many things to Mario's mechanic besides his double jump to make it feel less complicated.
Nintendo even catered too the audience that liked 3D game but also preferred them being more linear in Mario 3D World.
Now we have Odyssey bringing back with his old moves and bringing new ones, and cappy.
The game may have great success because everywhere that Mario has traveled seemed so imaginary and unreal, but now we see him in a world resembling our own, showing every character is different where ever you go.
Mario Odyssey may be overrated, but not because nostalgia it's because Nintendo is taking it's franchises to a new turn, making them more human and relatable for better or for worst.
What pisses me off is how Nintendo give kids the fake impression of "open worlds" because they use 3D technology, yet they obviously always have linear level design to their games. Mario Odyssey tries to look like a big game. It's not. It's just repetitive for its large amount of collectable items.
With that being said obviously Nintendo turns to younger kids. Which is great, games like Mario can be used as stepping stone to bigger and more adult games later for each person. But grownup people are seriously coming out saying Mario Odyssey is the best game of the year or something.

@@oonkymppa5923 I have an opinion and have played lots of Mario on Famicom, and Zelda is off-topic because we're talking about Odyssey but even if Nintendo did make an open world it's the same concept as they always do: repetition. Repeat, repeat, repeat. Little moments or little things over and over, they're just stacked across a big area. Collect items, break weapons, mountain climbing etc. But sure Zelda do have side quest stories that's right. I'm not saying it's bad, it's just mediocre. Odyssey is in poor taste that's all.

There's nothing TO explore, you're just suppose to find the moons and they're not hard to come by. It's a monotonous task for kids who wanna feel smart yet they aren't, which is patronizing to kids because Nintendo in their heyday encouraged kids to get over their insecurities in going through a level. Take a big leap over that gorge in faith.

I agree... to many moons and the majority of them aren't even hard to get. Bring back games like mario 64 where Stars were the main tobjective to get in each phase. Botw was fun at 1st but the open wide world was way over done with not enough rewarding and just got repetitive and boring like the majority of zelda games....

I can't believe so many people are impressed by a damn "frisbee cap". My homie beat Odyssey in ONE DAY!!!!! And he tried to convince himself that its okay because every Mario game is about the "end-game" content.
The fact that somebody can speed run this game in 90 minutes just goes to show how RUSHED the game was. Nintendo needed a Mario game for the holiday season to sell hardware or else they would’ve got destroyed by the Xbox One X alone.

HERE'S MY REVIEW FOR THIS GAME BUT WARNING IT'S LONG! ENJOY!
Before I start this review I only want to say that this is my personal opinion. If you do like this game and it's great to see that you guys can enjoy it while I can't! I really tries to like this game but I couldn't and you will see why.
Sooo.... Here we go.....
When I first heard of Oddysey I was so exited like everybody else who one a switch. I mean, we finally get to see a new main Mario title aver so many years! I saw all trailers and couldn't wait longer to finally get a copy of this game!
Acer work I immediately ran to the store to buy it with other guys who were as exited as I was.
The only thing that I wanted in this moment more than anything else is to play this game!!
I thought that this was going to be the best game ever created.
But boy was I wrong
The first level of the game looked ok to me. At this point I was still excited for the game. But then the first problem came with the tutorial. This game has foreced motion controls....
I was really disappointed by that when you have other switch title were you can turn them off. But the game was still fun so far.
Until I got to the second kingdom.
First of all, what the hell is up with the grass?
I don't mind retired grass but please put more effort in it. The place itself was so boring looking and too easy which is one of the main problems in this game. Like, where are the enemies?? Where are the platform sections from the previous games. Cuz jumping on an higher place does not count as platform section. At the top of the world problem number 2 star
These bosses, wete one of the most ugly things I've ever seen in my life. Their designs are absolutely horrible. And ,surprise their were too easy too! Oh and I forgot to mention the moon you have to collect. They are too easy to find! There literally everywhere! Also it was so unsatisfying too collect them. They now feel like collecting coins. Lol the coins are now more worth than the moons!
Anyway afterer finishing the level I got to the desert kingdom, which was the most fun and beautiful level so far but no WOW moment. Oh yeah I totally forgot to mention the capture function of Cappy. It was the most fun feature in the game but sadly there was nothing speacial to do with it. It was only there to get from point A to B. Aver playing a while I got to a mini ice level. And thus the real horror started. When I got into this section I was shocked, who ugly the background looked. This was N64 level of grafics. I was like" ...are they serious...??"
I usually don't mind grafics so much as long as they look good but this is really not ok. You can't be so lazy with grafics in 2017! This is an absolute no go!
After beating another boss I went to next 2 kingdoms which were also the last one for me.
Why you may ask? Because everything mayor problem I had with this game were literally summarized in these two kingdoms. This water kingdom.....this was not a world at all! It has no enemies and nearly no platform section! This was by far the most boring level I've ever played in an video game!! But sadly the torture wasn't over yet.
Then I started my final level...
I just couldn't believe what I saw. This was one of the most ugliest level I 've ever seen!
( I know I'm using I've ever seen very often her. Sorry!) I literally started to cringe because of this level! I 've just never seen something so ugly and uninspiring than this. And again we had a wonderful pixelated background which perfectly matches the ugly pixelated grass and the lifeless ugly trees. It was that very moment where I knew I wasn't able to handle this garbage game anymore. I stopped playing the game and went at the next day to the store to bring It back. I instead bought Arms, because it was on sale and believe me when I said that this game was 1000 times more fun than Super Mario Oddysey! Why? Because unlike this trash game Arms was actually fun! It has amazing character designs and very beautiful fighting levels. And it is actually challenging unlike Mario Oddysey which has no difficulty at all.
Combined with a great soundtrack Arms just feel even more action packed! But where was the music in Super Mario Oddysey? I wasn't too often no soundtrack at all?! Seriously? And speaking of music: Remember the amazing soundtrack of Super Mario Galaxy, (the game itself was amazing too😗😗) where you got goosebumps because of how incredible it was? Well, you will feel exactly notthing of it in Super Mario Oddysey because of how forgettable it was! The whole game is so forgettable in my opinion.
