The British Army are buying more new M270A1 or A2 Multiple Launch Rocket System (M270 MLRS) is an American armored self-propelled multiple launch rocket system Self-Propelled Loader/Launcher (SPLL). with a new M270 MLRS unit cost of $4.7 million (in 2023) compared to a new M142 HIMARS unit cost of $4.4 million (in 2023) too.
The SPLL is composed of three primary subsystems, namely the M269 Loader Launcher Module (LLM), which also houses the electronic Fire Control System, is mated to the M993 Carrier tracked vehicles,
The MoD should be buying for Royal Artillery instead, the M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) is a light multiple rocket launcher developed in the late 1990s for the United States Army and USMC.
Though the M142 HIMARS is mounted on a standard U.S. Army Family of Medium Tactical Vehicles (FMTV) M1140 diesel-powered 6x6 wheel frame all terrain truck, with a fully armoured control cab for a crew of three, a driver / loader, gunner / vehicle commander and radio-operator / loader.
The M142 HIMARS carries one pod, with either six Guided Multiple Launch Rocket System (GMLRS) rockets, or one US Army Tactical Missile System (ATACMS) missile, or will carry one new US Army
    Precision Strike Missile (PrSM).
Which is a short-range ballistic missile, developed by the United States Army to replace the MGM-140 ATACMS.
The PRSM will have a maximum range of in excess of 310 mi (500 km), carrying a warhead of 91 kilo's, plus with Supersonic flight capability in excess of Mach 3 (0.6 mi/s; 1.0 km/s) too.
Yes the MoD and Royal Artillery, should buy the new US Army Precision Strike Missile (PrSM), for the Royal Artillery existing ML270 MLRS tracked vehicles.
However buying more M270A2's is a wrong decision, they should be buying between 50 to 100 new M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS), mounted onto Rheinmetall MAN Military Vehicles (RMMV) Hx2 / HX 3 Tactical Military 6x6 or 8x8 wheeled trucks, with a fully armoured crew cab as the HIMAR Self-Propelled Loader/Launcher vehicle.
This would allow for at least one new Regular Royal Artillery HIMARS Regiment, with HQ Battery and Logistical Support Battery plus three Batteries each of 12 new M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) Self-Propelled Loader/Launcher vehicle, with four HIMARS Self-Propelled Loader/Launcher vehicles in reserve too.
Maybe a second new Reserve Royal Artillery HIMARS Regiment t oo, again with HQ Battery and Logistical Support Battery plus three Batteries (with two fire troops) each Battery of 12 new M142 High Mobility Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) Self-Propelled Loader/Launcher vehicle, with four HIMARS Self-Propelled Loader/Launcher vehicles in reserve too.
These two HIMARS Regiments, could support both the British Army Regiment Battle Groups and full Brigades overseas deployments, or Royal Marines overseas deployments too, by assigning independent HIMARS Batteries or Troops.
Equally these two HIMARS Regiments, could be deployed around the UK coastline, for Coastal Defence and Anti-Shipping duties, when armed with either ATACMS missile, or the newer PrSM missiles, providing protection out over the horizon and out to sea upto 300 miles.
Which would make the North Sea, the Irish Sea and the English Channel plus Western approaches, basically as no go areas for the likes of Russian Warships, equally large sections of the Norwegian Sea could be a similar no go ares too.
Along with a troop of HIMARS stationed between and around temporary launch sites, in the West and East Falklands Islands. Would give the Falkland Islands a 300 miles defence zone, against any approaching enemy warships too,
So buying HIMARS wheeled vehicles, over buying more MLRS tracked vehicles, makes more sense to artillery gunners, if the UK Politicians cannot see this for themselves.
