  • Gustav Mahler - 7th Symphony (piano solo) with score
Arranged and performed by Iain Farrington

Gustav Mahler (1860-1911) composed his 7th Symphony in 1904-5 while he was music director at the Vienna State Opera. It was written at Mahler's composing hut in Maiernigg near the Wörthersee, and he conducted the premiere in 1908 in Prague. The Symphony is notable for its inner movements that evoke the night: two subdued slow movements separated by a biting and sarcastic waltz. These contrast strongly with the opening movement (notable for its frequent use of ascending or descending fourths) and a consistently joyous Finale. The opening jagged rhythm of the piece was supposedly inspired by the sound of oars while Mahler was rowing on the Wörthersee. Mahler compared the first Nachtmusik to the Rembrandt painting The Night Watch, with a continuation of the major/minor conflict from the Sixth Symphony. The Schattenhaft movement is a grotesque nightmare that parodies the Viennese waltz, followed by the calm serenade quality of the second Nachtmusik. The Finale is filled with a sunny and optimistic mood, with hymn-like brass themes that seem to reference Wagner's Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg. There is no Classical key scheme for the Symphony, instead each movement inhabits its own tonal world. With its unorthodox structure and unexpected dissonant harmony, the work was not an initial success. However, one early admirer of the Symphony was the composer Arnold Schoenberg, who became a staunch admirer of Mahler's music after hearing a performance in Vienna.
An arrangement for solo piano of Mahler's work brings the music close to its compositional origins. In each one of his composing 'huts', Mahler had a piano at his disposal. His sketches are often on two or three staves of music, and can be read directly on the piano. Mahler often played his latest works on the piano to friends and colleagues, and his early training as a pianist left him with a good virtuoso technique. By performing the music in this way, it enabled the first listeners to hear the melodies and harmonies unadorned.
Mahler also 'recorded' some of his music onto piano rolls: the first movement of the 5th symphony, the last movement of the 4th symphony and several songs. These demonstrate Mahler's 'orchestral' piano technique, full in texture and tone, carrying the general sweep and drama of the music.
This solo piano arrangement of Symphony No. 7 is not just a literal transcription of the notes onto two staves, but a transformation into pianistic texture of the full sonic landscape. Hearing Mahler's music in this way allows us to take in the content as 'pure' music. In Mahler's lifetime, piano duet versions of the Symphonies were published, but very few for solo piano. This arrangement allows one player the opportunity to perform and study them.

I can't thank you enough. Mahler's music means a lot to me. It mentally heals me. You've done invaluable work arranging the symphonies. Such nice pieces are now available for solo performance. Bless you!

I clicked on this video with some scepticism. A piano arrangement of a Mahler symphony seemed as if it couldn't possibly work, what with the enourmous forces and complexity of the music. I thought it couldn't be done convincingly, but your videos have absolutely proved me wrong. Fantastic arrangements that not only do justice to the symphonies but allow further appreciation by offering a birds-eye view via piano arrangement. Outstanding playing too. Your ability to conjure an orchestra of sounds from one piano and delineate the various voices is tremendous. Excellent work, bravo!

No.7 contains my favorite introduction of all the Mahler symphonies. And they all have great opening themes.

Listening to Mahler's work, I feel almost as if I am seeing the face of God and hearing the music beyond the spheres. I've listened to as many of these piano arrangements of Mahler symphonies as I could find. I loved them all. But this one, for some reason, has me the most enthralled. Each movement gives you that X-ray sonic-picture of the interior of the work, blood vessels, bones and muscles, if not the heart and the brain. I commend Iain Farrington for his magnificently inspiring work, both as the arranger and the performer.

In fact, I love this transcription the best among your wonderful Mahler transcriptions. It is sad that this does not get the same viewership as your other videos simply due to 7th being not so popular.
Anyways, thanks to your great transcription and playing!

Pure geniusses at work! Mahler as well as Farrington, both as arranger and performer. It's just incredible! It borders mere insanity (in a totally positive way), how you manage to deliver the energetic process as well as the complex details with such precision and clarity. It's f****** unbelievable!

Thank you, that's great to know! I'm certainly planning to do some movements of Mahler 2. I would need a choir for the last movement, so that part won't be possible to record (along with the 8th Symphony).

@@iainfarrington It's good to hear you are arranging the 2nd. I've been enjoying all your scores and was disappointed there was only an arrangement of the first movement available. The other scores are brilliant so I look forward to it!
(By the way, I myself am arranging the 2nd symphony right now but having a go at the last movement too. It's proving an extreme challenge but parts of it are going well. I look forward to your score for comparison and hearing you play it since you will surely make it worthwhile. I'm not sure I can do my own arrangement justice!)

Hi you could also consider the Mahler 4 4th movement as a sing along piece, similar to the Mahler piano rolls but Mahler did not leave space for vocals.
