BRAMHAM CUM OGLETHORPE: Leeds Parish #23 of 38

- This is located in something known as the Golden Triangle, a term commonly used by estate agents for the area of West and North Yorkshire lying between Harrogate, York and the North of Leeds.
Former pupils of the now closed college formed Bradford Football Club in 1863 - the club which would go on to be the modern day Bradford Park Avenue. As well as the Great North Road it sits on the Roman road from York through Tadcaster to Ilkley giving it another historical facet goes back to Roman times.
It has a Grade I listed country house surrounded by a 200 hectare landscaped park ornamented by a series of follies and avenues. The estate would pass into the hands of his son-in-Law George Fox-Lane, who was given the re-created title of Baron Bingley in 1763.
Today it remains a private residence while the park is the setting for the annual Horse Trials and the Leeds Festival, which moved here in 2003. There’s RAF history here, there was a battle here and there’s oodles of other interesting little bits to talk about here. It’s got everything, and then a bit more.
This is the wonderful corner of Leeds which goes by the name BRAMHAM CUM OGLETHORPE.

BRAMHAM CUM OGLETHORPE ADDITIONAL INFORMATION:
None yet
16:34 " Bramham has no Post Office" - it does indeed have a Post Office - you showed it at 11:32 - the Village Shop has a Post Office Counter, there is a Post Office logo to the left of the shop sign, a hanging sign to the right of the doorway and a sign with Post Office Services to the left of it 🙂
No standalone post office. Still scans (Y)
@@TheVillageIdiot Yes- as there are only 118 Crown branches and not a significant number of standalone agency branches in the country it's hardly surprising Bramham isn't one of them...
Well done Andy, you're doing well with your pronunciation! Oglethorpe is how you pronounced it, not Ogglethorpe. Oglethorpe is one of the school 'houses ' at nearby Tadcaster Grammar School. Headley HALL is where the aircraft hanger is, I've repaired farm machinery in there, part of Leeds University Farm. Only 4 or 5 miles from where I live, again I've learned something tonight, thank you.
Awesome stuff. Yes indeed Headley Hall. I was hoping to go see that but there's no public right of way close enough to it
Really enjoyed that one, too, Andy. A wealth of information for a parish that has had a lot going on. Must be a lot easier than small parishes without many talking points, but you always find something to say about those ones, too! 😉
Very interesting episode, thanks
Love the videos! There’s a post office in Bramham at the village shop.
Excellent video as always. I think that you did the village full justice.
Minor observations
At the top of Freely Lane is a relatively new road sign which incorrectly refers to Almshouse Hill as Almhouses Hill.
You also mentioned the ambulance station. This was situated in the fenced off area off Freely Lane (right next to Bramham House) before its closure in 2008. There is a web page containing photos post closure for anyone interested.
Finally Tenter Hill used to be a through road to Thorner prior to the A1 being upgraded to Motorway status.
Keep up the good work!
I wondered where that ambulance station was! Cheers Bob!
The white building at 9 minutes also used to be a pub, the Bay horse as depicted by the relief on the wall. It belonged to Bentley's Yorkshire Breweries of Woodlesford which eventually became Whitbread
Is that the company that owns Wetherspoons or am I thinking of some other chain?
EDIE: Yes I was, it's the company that owns Premier Inn Brewers Fayre and Beefeater
I forgot to say, the two pubs are referred to as the top pub, and the bottom pub.
Hasn't the red lion shutdown again?
Seemed very much open to me
@@TheVillageIdiot ah good a neighbour said Humphrey Smith had decided to close it again for foul language 😂
Yup, it’s closed at the moment. Signs still outside. Hopefully it won’t be long before someone else is brave enough to work for HS
I think the last people left of their own accord
