It's just my personal guess but it feels like this was a worked shoot. Punk was probably addressing real problems he had with the company similar to his pipebomb from before. He addressed wrestlers who worked for different companies and we know wwe doesnt really like bringing up their competition.
While all of this was a storyline, CM Punk has confirmed many times since that he really meant everything he said and that his frustrations with WWE were real life.
I believe paul heyman was the one that advised punk to channel his frustrations into promos and make himself a star. Punk's promos are incredibly similar to heyman's promos about the death of ecw and the attitude era

That's the best part about it. It wouldn't have worked for anyone else. He was probably the only one that had the guts to say that in front of a live crowd on television to Vince McMahon's face. He nailed it.
The fact that CM Punk could play the crowd and get pops like that while being a heel was definitely something special. The crowds didn't care how he was aligned in the storylines at that point.

WWE really dropped the ball by letting CM Punk and Bad News Barrett go. Those 2 could've been 2 of the best on the mic in the last decade (if creative let them).

This entire story between Punk-Cena-McMahon was S tier television. The match at MITB was icing on the already amazing cake. Proof that WWE always has potential to be this great. No matter how much I personally enjoy AEW, I'll never fully give up on Vince.
Sometimes I go back and look at the promos of matches from 10 to 15 years ago and wonder how WWE got here because even after 2008 when they officially became PG they still had some great newcomers and storylines from old and new talent.
@@dansal4726 technically the only “”””new”””” talent they were pushing during this 2011-12 era were Sheamus, Daniel Bryant and Alberto Del Rio… every other main eventer was from another era, wether it was CM Punk, Mark Henry, John Cena, The Miz, Christian or Randy Orton. Personally one of my favourite stories from the post PG era is CM Punk vs Jeff Hardy in 2009 (gotta rewatch the entire feud it’ll surprise you how good it was), even then it is a Ruthless Aggression era dude in Punk against an Attitude Era one in Jeff..
They haven't been able to curate a storyline this good since. A mix of realism/ entertainment that was hot as anything in the wrestling world at the time. 2011 was really underrated when I think about it, the Triple H COO/ Walk out was also well done
Punk was literally the hottest thing in all of pro wrestling.. After 9 years, he's still the most polarizing star that the WWE could possibly bring back
WWE didn't know how to handle him or his character. Same thing happened recently to Matt Hardy and his Broken gimmick. WWE cannot handle something they cannot control since both gimmicks were brought into WWE by respective wrestlers and WWE had absolutely no control over them.

Yo I really love cm punk’s promo. But, I don’t understand this yankees, Celtics comparison. Is he comparing American football clubs ? Wanna explain in detail ?? I have watched this promo probably 4-5 times and that Yankees stuff goes over my head.
@@user-yu2cq9hq5u yankees are the most winning-est team and has the most championships. They went from being one of the worst teams to being the best, like how John Cena was
@user-yu2cq9hq5u He started by listing different Boston teams in different sports (Red Sox, Bruins, Patriots, Celtics) since Cena is from West Newbury, Massachusetts, a stone's throw from Boston. Much like Cena's character, the city of Boston carries an underdog fighting spirit that carries into its sports teams, though the underdog characterization is often misappropriated. The Celtics are one of the most successful NBA teams, and the Patriots are one of the most successful NFL teams, particularly in 2011 when this storyline occurred and Tom Brady was quarterback. The Bruins hockey team wasn't as historically successful, but they were in the midst of a successful championship run when this storyline happened. Punk is calling Cena an underdog in name only, but the Yankees comparison takes it a step further. The New York Yankees are the main rival of the Boston Red Sox (both baseball teams). The Yankees are also one of the richest franchises and the winningest team in Major League Baseball, and it's not even close (27 World Series Championships while the second best team only has 11). In comparison, the Red Sox have won 9 World Series titles (7 at the time of this storyline), went 86 years without a World Series victory, and have a 200+ regular season game deficit in their rivalry against the Yankees. It's the fiercest rivalry in baseball. By comparing Cena to the Yankees, Punk is not only insulting Cena as a fan of the rival team, but he's labeling him an ultra successful rich dynasty that is everything that Boston proclaims to stand against.
Yes. I think CM punk could have easily replaced Michael Cole on commentary. Does anyone remember his commentary days into 2010. I do. They were good I think he could replace a lot of these guys today behind that broadcast desk.

If he was doing all improvised stuff, he would of been taken off t.v. and paid to stay home.
It seriously did feel real mainly when he called Cena the New York Yankees in Boston. When John warned him had me thinking “Damn. Was this really scripted?”
This moment really hits different for Punk now. The same fans who cheered for him in this moment is now the same fans who booed him in his recent AEW collision return. Punk is now getting that 2006-2011 John Cena treatment. Some people hate him, some don't. But CM Punk is still CM Punk. 👏👏👏👏
This man is an inspiration to me. I know it's just an act, but his charisma and speaking skills are some of the best the wwe has ever seen. He really was the best in the world.
What CM Punk did on the mic in 2011, the effects are still present in 2021. His pipebomb, no matter how much the detractors would like to deny it, has laid the foundation of Yes Movement, Golden age of NXT, built stars like Adam Cole and Gargano, and so on. Because from these promos, the crowd started paying attention to the "smaller guys" in the eyes of WWE. Now, you can say Rey Mysterio is a small guy who got to be a star, but Rey got squashed when a big dude came about. Punk was different, and so were the rest after him.
And building “stars” like Adam Cole and Gargano has made wrestling the least popular it’s ever been. Pushing guys just because they’re small and do flips hasn’t helped wrestling at all.
@@shocka2435 you do understand NXT has had been the most popular brand of the 3, right? NXT audience are more engaged with the product than anything Raw and SmackDown pit together combined. People would rather watch Cole and Gargano work 10 times a week than Cena and Orton walk in circles for 10 minutes
@@limcritiques And NXT has the lowest viewership of them all and has annually lost money since moving to the indie work rate style. AEW caters to that style as well which is why they rarely reach 1M viewers. Raw and SmackDown are filled with long matches and workrate as well, which is why they draw record low numbers. It’s fine if you like it but the indie workrate style does not draw. It only has a niche vocal fanbase. Small guys who do flips does not draw in viewers. Cena and Orton are global stars who have character and mic skills. All Gargano can do is put on “5 star matches” only a niche audience cares about.
@@shocka2435 ur right on the small guys thing being niche but the bigger problem is mic skills/charisma- Punk had mic skills, that’s what Gargano and many of the NXT blokes don’t have as much, And NXT tbf to them isn’t a world known historic entity, everyone knew NXT was just a stepping stone for Smackdown and Raw which are household productions and are carrying off of that but the reason both those brands pull in record low numbers isn’t because of hard work and longer matches??? It’s cos the wrestlers productions been stifled and covid leading to no fans effected wrestling so much more than other sports (if u will), plus ppl over 12 don’t wanna watch Goldberg and Lesnar smash someone every single match for 8 minutes who have no loyalty and could leave the company at any moment- u could have a bunch of Garganos with charisma and long matches that would work out in WWE but they would need creative either freedom or continuity which has been lacking the last decade+
And then Ciampa got squashed by Bron Breakker. And then Dolph Ziggler got squashed by Goldberg. And then Bray Wyatt got squashed by Goldberg. And then Kofi Kingston got squashed by Brock Lesnar. And then Ricochet got squashed by Brock Lesnar. And then Zack Ryder lost his US title and was buried by John Cena and Kane. And then NXT was neutered or "rebranded" as NXT 2.0 and started to pull the same old stuff from the main roster instead of using the formula that got fans invested in the first place. Many battles were won for the smaller guys, but the war continues on and its still an uphill affair.

This promo by Punk is criminally underrated. Everything he said to Cena was legit. WWE potrayed Cena as an underdog back then funny enough, and Punk was right to point that out. You don't get this level of promos now anywhere. WWE really messed up with Punk, he could have been their X factor going forward.
Yeah, after main-eventing Wrestlemania countless times and becoming a well established champion of the company, it's MORE of a shock when someone actually beats Cena around that time. No way in hell did anyone think he was the "underdog" after Wrestlemania 21 and beyond, yet he was often booked as if he was GTFOH!
He often spoke facts, at this point i remember WWE being underwhelming with extremely predictable Cena matches. 1...2.... and a kickout all the time. Also predictable moveset on top of that, the 5 moves of doom. Cm punk helped WWE turn the spotlight to other wrestlers rather than Cena and seemed like a worthy opponent to face John Cena. It also made people respect Cena more during the CM Punk heel turn, Cena got character development with better promos and made people appreciate him more. Roman Reigns for a while was like John Cena without the CM Punk roadblock, got booed a ton due to people seeing right through what was going on.
Nunca Desista I like Braun but I honestly don't think wwe is getting more fans that weren't fan before. When it comes to new talent how many people know about them outside of wwe.

This promo returned to life in the most shocking way imaginable. In less than a week Punk subtly exposed Vince psychopathic behavior and on top of that, The Rock's uncalled main event with Roman
Including Johnny Ace 😂
"I am the voice of the voiceless."

This is like the scene where Joker kills Murray
Hahahahaha so true
"Wanna hear another joke Vince ?"
- Yep"
- "ROMAN REIGNS"
Nope
Read my friggin mind haha
Cm punk should come back to the wwe.that will actually bring the wwe raw or smackdown ratings up.he don't even have to wrestle,he can just cut promos.i remember when cm punk first came out to the song Cult of personality,i was at that raw,cm punk and John cena were holding the exact same spinner belt.that's when wwe was halfway decent not like nowadays,cm punk is real and you can believe he is saying.mjf in aew reminds me of cm punk so much especially his promos.I'm not a mjf fan but I'm a fan of his promos.
“You’re a dynasty, you are what you hate, you have become the New York Yankees”
Freaking love it!!!!!!
I laugh as that's the thing that pushed Cena over the edge.
@@gojenson For the people who are from Boston, being called a Yankee is the worst insult imaginable
@@NicholasBhagasinsan but the Red Sox are a dynasty……. wannabe.
@@KevAng039 Boston won 4 world series in 6 years? that's a dynasty
@@forty6427 it’s a wannabe dynasty.
But there’s that 86 year gap and while they didn’t win a thing, the Yankees kept going and going.
The city of Boston has in general become a dynasty since 2001.
That crescendo to the New York Yankees line is just pure promo gold from Punk. I'm beyond happy he's back.
One of the greatest promos ever inside one of the best segments ever.
The part where punk “talks them into the building” gives me goosebumps still.
After all he said.. 9 years later and things are so much worse.
Dude the pipebomb was scripted
If it wasn't they would have *_I M M E D I A T E L Y_* cut the mic
Yoo JasperIsHere it wasn’t scripted, but mr. McMahon knew ahead of time. Cm punk was allowed to say basically whatever he wanted as long as he didn’t mention TNA
My least favorite thing about all of this...our dumbasses really thought it'd be different a decade ago.. *sigh
@@Figs3 oh it's different alright. Worse, but different
This moment made me a CM Punk guy.
Cm Punk:you don't give a damn and I care too much
Still hits me in 2019
yeah it was something I definitely didn't expect to hear. Kayfabe or not. Notice how Mcmahon was illustrating how much he hates Punk with the name mispronounce and the yell at 5:36, and the fact that he used his government name on air.
Andriy Sheva wrong, both are wrong,Vince is crazy and was wrong75.00
Me too. 2020 and still!
Why? he punked out :D
11:28 some of the things that came out “bully” is too nice a word
“You wanna punish people for actually liking pro wrestling?” That hit me hard because to this day,Vince still puts entertainment over pro wrestling
PunkxGirl good. Entertainment>Boring fake fights
Not according to the ratings.
Orlando Berna So you think the main roster of today is entertaining?
Baby, wrestling died a LONG time ago, how long can someone put an arm bar on before they yelling boring? Jim Cornette speaks truth.
The fights tell a story when they are done right. Being "fake" has nothing to do with it.
Aew mainly mjf promos are great. Have you seen punk vs mjf promo segment
@@shangarbagio countless times??? You know John has only main evented mania 5 times right???
@@danluce5995 how many times has CM Punk main evented Mania, even as the WWE Champion?
They created CM Punk and they turned him into there worst nightmare because he told the truth and that's what set him free.
Cm punk was cm punk before wwe
What a joke
Roman boy😒
Wwe create roman dumb.....
Wait explain to me Better
Considering they scripted the whole thing..
Still hits home after all these years.
🏡😊
Well CM Punk Promos are on a whole other level, it's insane they wasted such talent .
FlAs HeRiNg They waste a lot of talent i.e anyone that's good on the mic and it isn't scripted i.e Mr. Kennedy i.e Braun strowman.
Lyric X They have a gold mine with Braun Strowman. But, they arent using right to his full potential.
Conrad Gonzales I agree.
Conrad Gonzales How is he a gold mine? Explain please
Nunca Desista I like Braun but I honestly don't think wwe is getting more fans that weren't fan before. When it comes to new talent how many people know about them outside of wwe. Meaning how many of these new stars are recognized by people who don't watch wwe. I don't watch boxing or UFC but I know about Floyd and I know about Connor and a few other MMA fighters.
The chemistry was something else between Cena and Punk
Punk was the rival to Cena that they wanted Orton to be. The Austin to Cena's Rock. Except Austin was actually allowed to main event PPVs when he was champion
@@NoName-cz3wn 😂😂😂😂
@@NoName-cz3wn great comment
@@jesonchase2233 I'd say good comment not great
@@NoName-cz3wn Nah .. Orton was always like the ultimate villain to John Cena’s hero . With Punk and Cena it was more like a hero and an edgier Antihero
In my opinion 20:43 CM Punk talking about WrestleMania 22 is my favorite part of this segment! True fans know what he’s talking about
Lol cena's entrance
That was when he was still with OVW.
Wrestling can be real
8:59 OMG!!!! Knowing what we know now, this line hits even harder!!
