@@Woodland26 I don't know about the late 70s/ early 80s. But absolutely in the mid to late 80s, petrol cost *over 40 cents per litre* - I can clearly remember whenever seeing a petrol station charging anywhere near 40 cents in mid-late 80s, it was unbelievably cheap! *Most* of the time during that period, petrol cost around *50 cents* a litre.
Woolies store number for Eastwood is 1200. The whole complex was slated for demolition some time ago but fell through. Woolies will not put any money into the place other what is operational necessary. The expansion at Macquarie & Top Ryde ended any chance for this place to be upgraded, expect it to remain the same for many years to come.
I was a teenager when I moved to Eastwood in 1978. I moved away, but still go there now and then. The supermarket has not changed a bit since. I am not sure it was a Woolworths or Safeway - the one in Epping Rd Marsfield definitely was a Safeway then. There was Target in the ground level. It had quite a bit of floor space. Rowe St was not a mall then and every shops closed after midday on Saturday excepts those milk bars. There was a Franklin in Lakeside Road too. In those days $1 (in paper note) you can buy a loaf of brand name bread, a litre of milk in a glass bottle from the milk bar and get change. The fish and chips shop can sell you a large serve of chunky chips for 40 cents. A litre of super (leaded) petrol was < 20 cents.
Wow, you just spoke my mind. I grew up there during the same time period - everything you stated matches my memory exactly. It's rare you can return to your home suburb and it has not changed that much. I also remember all the original ships in the Eastwood center & their location - interesting to see what has replaced them !
@@AbandonedOZ I notice it because ive been going there since I was a kid, I know where to look to see the 'old store' Another that comes to mind and it leeches back to the 70's is the Woolworth city store opposite Town Hall. They try to hide it's age but if you know where to look it's frozen in time.
I worked there in 1988 till 1990. I've been back there after I left and it did change. Hollys restaurant closed. Our old staffroom was cut in half, and it became the new front end of the store. The checkouts were put there , it used to be footwear section and garden section. The old entry doors were on the side, the carpark is where the old entry doors were.
@@debbiebradney131 Have you noticed the odor in that Kmart today. Some of my friends speculate there's a deep hidden sewage leak. I suspect it's very old and filthy air conditioning ducts. The the current toy department area there is a very old strained vent on the roof and to me the smell is stronger there.
Plastic bags, we now have to buy plastic garbage bags instead of supermarket ones. Net zero impact on the environment. Paper bags are good for starting fires though
@@Her.Serene.Feline.Cuteness. The last time I was in Burwood Westfield was in about 1980. I have very little recollection of its layout, which has almost certainly changed since then anyway.

Unfortunately this branding lasted until 2009 not 2002. Because the last advertisement with that branding is 2009. The rebranding came 2010. Also the only thing original inside is the flooring and a few other bits. A lot of Woolworths stores use the old logo until the end 2016 before it was replaced with a new logo.
I lived in Eastwood from 1989 until 1996. I used to shop at that Woolworths store on a weekly basis during the years I lived there. When I first moved there it still had manual cash registers. I was working at Woolworths Macquire Centre when I first arrived in Sydney and it was quite modern in comparison. The Eastwood store was the last one be changed over to scanning registers. I saw that news article a couple of years ago brought back memories of that time. Eastwood was a completely different Suburb back in the late 80s to mid 90s the Asian influnce has made it a completely different place. There was a Franklins also in Eastwood at the same time it was down in the shopping precinct down near the Post Office. I left Sydney in 2000 been back to Eastwood a few times when visiting Sydney.
That's def a retro looking Woolies alright! Also Franklins holy hell, I've not heard that name in so LONG, I just barely recall doing a work experience there at one once AGES ago! This vid kinda unearthed ancient memories lol.
A bit of trivia… as you walked out of the Eastwood Centre, the Sakura Supermarket opposite used to be Woolworths, before the Eastwood Centre was built. In the 1960s Woolworths was more of a variety store with clothes for sale as well as food. I remember quite often buying an ice cream cone from the front of Woolworths shop when I was a child.
that is true. Woolworths in the late 70-early 80s was not really a supermarket brand. Even Target was a better variety store than Woolies. After school, I used to catch the train to Chatswood (3 platforms then), go to the Woolworths in Victoria Ave (now a part of Westfield) and buy silverside or devon ham for my sandwich. The deli part of Woolies was really the only food section. Even the Grace Bros had a better supermarket in basement compared to Woolies in Chatswood.
@@blackraven81demon89 Sort of. The old Woolworths shops were much smaller than Big W. At that time, milk and bread were home delivered and there were separate shops for buying food, fruit and vegetables, butchers for meat and delicatessens for preserved foods. They were all separate small businesses. There were a lot of “corner stores”. There were department stores like Grace Brothers, Mark Foys, David Jones and Myer, of which, only the latter two now exist. It was just different times. There were no shopping malls or supermarkets.
You should check the Woolworths in the Newcastle suburb of Warabrook. Last I seen they still had all the original signage on the exterior and within the store still used many of the original fixtures like the 'closed' sign that they would hang between checkouts on hooks to block them off. They still even had a fully-manned "8 items or less" express check out in lieu of the self-serves. Massive time capsule.
Oh no!! Phil it looks like you’re too late! I was there last year and it was exactly like all Woolies were when I started working for them in 1993. The checkout layout, the checkout numbers, the floors, the shelves, the signage, everything. This was only about 12 months ago. No self serve checkouts then, just an old “Service Desk” in the middle of a bank of checkout and some staffed “express lanes”. Such a shame you didn’t get this vid while it truly was still as it was 30 years ago. I wish they hadn’t renovated it. I’m devo now 😩
@@tinascousin wasn't there another Woolworths or was it Coles supermarket that was even more frozen in time? or was this eventually refurbished to modernisation?
@@dulcinealee3933You may be thinking of the last Flemings store at Jannali that only closed 2 or 3 years ago. Woolies took over Flemings in the early 60s and continued using Flemings branding on those stores until they were closed down or modernised. There are some UA-cam videos on its last days.
If I were to choose my "main supermarket" for grocery shopping on a regular basis, I would pick Foodland over Woolies any day of the week. Foodland has better customer service and their checkout staff don't rudely walk away from the register and keep people waiting in line, unlike Woolies. Bring back the good old days (and get rid of the crappy paper bags).
The way things are going now with retro being in, considering that they have already upgraded the inside, I hope they leave the outside looking this way. Speaking as a former Franklins empolyee from that time also, it does give that vibe hahaha. The old abandoned Caringbah Marketplace had a Franklins from this time & it's still abandoned, possibly set up inside.

Lol, I worked in that centre in the late 80's and then had a chance to work in that Woolies or Hornsby which I chose. That whole entire centre has changed so much since then and not really for the better either. Its funny cuz I was just talking about that centre the other day.
I used to work at Eastwood station sometimes as a cleaner and I only ever walked to that Woolworths once. I got talking to one of the staff that worked in the fruit and veg section. He had been asked numerous times to change the vegetable signage saying what they are to Chinese instead of English or have english and Chinese and he refused. I'm not sure how others would think of his decision but I was with him on not changing it. We are in Australia. (Sorry if I offend anyone)
I lived in Eastwood for about a year a few years ago. I loved the strong sense of Asian culture and the food is amazing. But I agree with him (and you) on that stance.
Na your absolutely fucking right ..Woolworths is now the only fucking store we have left that's Australian look I'm sorry if this sounds or comes across racist in anyway but the whole of Eastwood is literally fun by Chinese or Korean now and I'm fed up with them taking over everything to make it suitable for them ...many times I ask myself am I living in Australia anymore here cause this is crazy
Hi Kylie I worked with you at that time but will not identify myself. Twice while working there people said to me "do you realise we are the only white men on this station" Clearly they were previous residents and were shocked on how it had changed. I hated sweeping the jacaranda tree leaves on the up side near the lift.
The local theory was by not upgrading the sign it made the local Asian population believe they were not wasting money on decorations and the prices would be better value. I heard that 20 years ago and the sign is still the same. No clue if its just a local legend or joke.
@@user-pi6cs3ue4s Apparently they've had plans to redevelop the centre for years but they've been delayed so often that they just assumed there was no use renovating anything about the centre or woolworths.

Funny that in the suburb I grew up in, nearby was a small shopping center that it took a while to be up to date with the stores rebranding, like even though the original Woolworths logo phased out in 2002, the Woolworths in this shopping center still got the original branding and it wasn't until I think the early 2010s that the new branding finally catched up with it. It's amazing that some places don't have the money to redesign the stores to match the rebranding of the store chains they got and it ends up really late when the rebranding finally catches up to the place.
I'm definitely going to visit there. I've been feeling kind of down lately and the usual way I cheer myself up is by going to places that feel good, but sadly many of those places have been "renovated" or otherwise destroyed, and all I have is fleeting memories that can be invoked by visiting places that remind me of happier times.
Coles at Tea Tree Plaza (not far from my home!) is gradually being changed to 2020s decor. I've captured footage of it being stuck in time with its original overhead aisle signs since it opened in 1998.
I remember just a couple of years ago there was a Woolworths (shut down around 2020) that was completely untouched from 1998 which also included the interior. I still remember going to the place as a kid and it was completely crazy.
I have memories of the clickety clack of mechanical cash registers there and at Coles in Eastwood Village centre in 1978 to 81 period as a kid starting school. I remember noticing they had the same model cash registers but with different coloured keys in certain spots. I found it fascinating. I remember Deanes Coaches and Cumberland Coaches buses going through a busy bustling Rowe Street stopping outside Eastwood Centre both had Leyland Nationals and manual Bedford BLPs with Smithfield Euro bodies with their deep bellowing front engine beddy 500 diesels roaring away. Man the area has changed so much.
A few years ago I bought some old comics off marketplace and traveled almost 2 hours to pick them up from a suburb I’d never heard of but it had a very nostalgic feeling when I arrived. I’ve been trying to remember the name of it for a while now and turns out its Eastwood. The spot your standing in at 5:30 is where I met the guy, thanks for solving this little personal mystery I had going on.
I hope they preserve the facade and keep it that way. Looks so nostalgic. Even the Franklins reference felt nostalgic haha. I use one of those reusable shopping bags with the old Woollies logo on it, they are called 'enviro-bags'.
The Eastwood Centre is a contender for The Ugliest Building in Sydney, built backwards compared to "modern" design thinking, and just a box when viewed from the main road. Fond childhood memories of the food eateries in the place but the architecture was always old, even when the centre was brand new!
There was a large fire on the building between the shopping centre and Masonic hall, thus knocked out a large fruit shop in the first level and a clothing store down stairs plus various small shops. Now it is an open space for various street food stalls.
The Kinghorne Street Store (Nowra) had that branding until around 2014, and got new signs above the aisles at the same time. It had another touch up a couple of years ago (maybe 2019-20, don’t quote me) where it got new shelves and aisle signs. But still has the same ‘Special’ signs at the deli and same checkouts (Just with new monitors) from that era. The other Nowra store had that logo until at least 2015, but had a more major refit when they modernised the signs. I remember the catalogue advertising the “Fresh new look at Nowra Fair”.
If Phil has a moment can also check out North Rocks Westfield. It was probably the first Westfield in Sydney, also hosting one of the few K Mart in Sydney during 1978 era. K Mart had a cafe inside (Holly's). There has been some minor upgrade inside, with Coles in the new extension. However it is quite matching Eastwood as I remember it.
North Rocks shopping centre has changed drastically in the last few years. There's even a KFC and Service NSW now. Not the sleepy, old school place it used to be.
That has not been a Westfield for at least 10 years. When it was, I remember hearing that it was the smallest Westfield in their portfolio. That aside, that entire area, from North Rocks, Oatlands, through to Dundas Valley had a very dilapidated/ 'old school' feel to it well into the 2010s. The large tracts of public housing contained therein probably contributed to that. Less so now as the Carlingford line is being turned into a metro and the area is finally beginning to attract interest.
The whole shopping centre is stuck in time and built I think in seventies - its the site of the old granf Eastwood movie Theatre - I went there to see the sound of music as a child - FACTS - The Duke of York Theatre was opened in May 1927. On 14th May 1932, organist Stan Cummins opened the newly installed Australian built Christie 2Manual/7Ranks organ. Other organist’s who appeared on the console include Penn Hughes, Ray Chaffer, Cyrus Tuckwell, and finally Pierre de Clossay. The organ was closed-down in September 1940. It was re-opened on 17th December 1949 by organist John Pitt, and was used regularly for the Odeon National Cinema Club, as the theatre had been taken over in 1950 by Greater Union Theatres and re-named Odeon. The Christie organ was removed from the building in 1957 and sold to Epping Baptist Church. The Odeon was closed on 11th January 1973, and was demolished. Eastwood Shopping Centre was buuilt on the site.
Woolworths Eastlakes and the whole shopping centre which used to be called BKK is still stuck in time. They’ve built a whole new apartment complex opposite it with a new woolies metro, aldi, post office and other shops as well and you can really see the difference from one side of the street to the other
Thanks for making this video! I guess the building is slated for redevelopment? It would make sense that WW don't want to invest in fully redoing the fit-out if the buiding will be pulled down. Rest of the shopping centre is still in a time warp!
Theres a chinese developer/investor who owns most of Eastwood centre, however he cant travel because of CCP restricitons so all developemnt is on hold atm.
All the shops have changed. Except I remember there was a pharmacy opposite of Woolworths in the 80s, don't know if it's the same one. The building actually looked ok back then. Another old Woolworths is the Balmain one, but they maybe upgrading it.
Eastwood used to be a nice suburb back in the 80’s and 90’s….these days it’s E-WOO…and Now it resembles an uncleaned toilet…plenty of unfriendly people who have taken over and pushed all the locals out with their dirty money…Sadly…its another Sydney suburb…long gone…all sold overseas
Just discovered your channel. This reminded me of a McDonald's I found in Charters Towers which had self serve checkouts, but felt like it was stuck intime.

In Campbelltown NSW, we have 3 Woolworths within a 2 km distance. One at Campbelltown Mall, one at Campbelltown Marketfair and one at Macarthur Square. I think the one at Macarthur Square is the oldest and in the same location when they first moved in the 1980s. The one at Campbelltown Mall was on the ground floor originally but they moved to the first floor to a bigger floor plan. The one at Marketfair used to be big IGA and Woolies took it over. All 3 get very busy as Campbelltown has grown so much in the last 50 years. If one Woolies had run out of a grocery item I need I just pop over to the next one.
Hi Phil, interesting seeing an old style Woolworths store and the old arcade for that matter. We have a Woolworths store near here, though back in the 1980s, it was Safeway. Anyway, all the very best. Rob in Melbourne Australia.
I’ve shopped at supermarkets in Brisbane like that one over the years. It’s like head office forgot the were there. They are usually quiet places which I loved. Sadly when they are remodeled they become so busy.
Woolworths Belgrave in VIC hadn’t been renovated from the old Safeway days until 2021, was very interesting to see the time capsule it was until its completion. The inside of this store looks a lot newer than what Belgrave was, however everything appears to be introduced in steps. E.g. self serves, entry gates, produce scales.

The Woolworths in Blackburn North Melbourne was stuck in time from the 1980s until recently when the whole shopping centre was renovated and extended so the interior was fully demolished and rebuilt with the exterior getting a massive makeover at the same time! :)
If you want to see another retro Woolies go to the one at St Ives shopping village, that entire mall is like a nice small mall from the 90s, low ceilings etc, the MacDonald's and the woolies all have the retro look Also the woolies at Redfern is super old and retro
The Woolworths I most fondly remember is the one in the Sydney CBD. I can’t recall how we got there, but it was underground somewhere. I’m sure you of all people know exactly where I am referencing.
Eastwood Centre is owned by the Yuhu group. Yuhu had plans to redevelop the site but their plans stalled when it was reported they had lobbied/influenced a certain (now former) politician. Yuhu occupies the office space above the retail. Most of the shops including Woolies are probably on month-to-month leases. New tenants are unlikely to commit given the possibility of redevelopment, hence why so many old shops remain trading. Eastwood Mall used to be vibrant with quality anchor tenants, but started slowly dying after Macquarie Centre opened in 1981.
Cool , I love it 👍I used to work in Eastwood at a Pancake restaurant back in 1969 , I’ll have to visit Eastwood again , it’s like having China town close by, my son is married into a Chinese family , their children are beautiful 😍
4:39 change it to 50hz or specifically use 25fps / 50fps / 100fps for antiflicker. That is an awesome time capsule! I wish they would own it and make it retro. I mean, how did the sign evade upgrades over the years? I love those old semi creepy nostalgic plazas, because I never grew up with them :)
Go to Newcastle. Especially if you like the 'creepy' vibe. I was there in the immediate aftermath of COVID. Entire arcades with only two or three shops in the entire place. Half the lights switched off, escalators switched off to save on overheads.
Woolworths are in the process of refurbishments. Thornleigh Woolworths still has the old Franklin's checkout counters for full lane checkouts but are having their complete refurbishment in October. Quite frankly, I am looking forward to it all looking new.
Yeah that whole building is ancient, I think part of it caught fire some years ago. I'm surprised a big chain like Woolies has allowed it to be left with the old logo.
I went to this Woolworths back in 2017 out of curiosity, and it was still in its state of retro decay. It was quite gross, but yes, a fossil. My most vivid memories were that the meat cabinets stunk, the meat was in a horrific state, as was the shop's floor and wooden-slat walls. While I'm glad to see it has been refurbished, it's a shame they didn't restore its retro decor for fun.

I was gonna say, I worked at a Woolies in 2008-2009 and my name tag and store still had this branding.

The black and white flooring at the back is a relic as well.
That's def a retro looking Woolies alright!
Also Franklins holy hell, I've not heard that name in so LONG, I just barely recall doing a work experience there at one once AGES ago!
This vid kinda unearthed ancient memories lol.
"No frills"
Another fun fact, right bellow Woolworths inside the shopping centre used to be Target.
My grandmother calls big W big Woolworths
So it was more like a big W really
Yeah it's still like that

@@Sherbet4ever that's probably it . Thanks!

In Ipswich Queensland there was a store like this that was open right up until 2017. It has since been demolished to make way for a new public space.
I remember just a couple of years ago there was a Woolworths (shut down around 2020) that was completely untouched from 1998 which also included the interior. I still remember going to the place as a kid and it was completely crazy.
Yeah that was pointless. Would be nice if you could actually tell us *where* this was.
You should do a video dedicated to this shopping centre- I thinks it’s one of the oldest in Sydney
If you want to see ugly just go to Bankstown Mall.

It is no longer a westfield
It reminds me of shops in a third world Asian country.
The whole shopping centre is stuck in time and built I think in seventies - its the site of the old granf Eastwood movie Theatre - I went there to see the sound of music as a child -
FACTS - The Duke of York Theatre was opened in May 1927.

Do they speak English in the mall?
English will be the second language soon. Thanks albo
@@ACDZ123 I'm sure I'll fit right in @ Eastwood Mall ( never been to Eastwood is it ike Chatswood except frozen in time)
It's optional.
😂😂😂

John 3:16-21
16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life. 17 For God sent not his Son into the world to condemn the world; but that the world through him might be saved. 18 He that believeth on him is not condemned: but he that believeth not is condemned already, because he hath not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. 19 And this is the condemnation, that light is come into the world, and men loved darkness rather than light, because their deeds were evil. 20 For every one that doeth evil hateth the light, neither cometh to the light, lest his deeds should be reproved. 21 But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Mark 1.15
15 And saying, The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God is at hand: repent ye, and believe the gospel.
2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Hebrews 11:6
6 But without faith it is impossible to please him: for he that cometh to God must believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek him.
Jesus
saw like 1 non-chinese person there
Great video!
Yous should travel around paramatta road, Leichhartd, Norton street so many abandoned placs, they are getting redeveloped soon tho.
I was walking past this arcade yesterday and saw the old signage outside but didn't realise the actual woolies had the signage too. crazy i wish i actually went to see it.
Interesting topic you are exploring on this channel. New sub
Cool old school look, I remember the old Wentworthville shopping centre looked a bit like this but I think it might be upgraded now.
pretty old sign to woolworths alright amazing to see it like that and you mentioned franklins an old supermarket which in queensland we had and there store brand name products were no frills was an ok supermarket but think all stores of them are phased out now but woolworths has been around for some time now i no it was called safeways in melbourne years ago cool video mate.
warabrook woolworths near newcastle nsw is very similar to this, stuck in the 80s-90s
I shopped there when growing up, 61 now. Got my first bottle of red wine from the liquor store that is still in the same place going up the escalators, sone things don't change, everything else has.
I used to live in Eastwood until last year I’m happy to see this old woolies talked about
The Woolworths in Blackburn North Melbourne was stuck in time from the 1980s until recently when the whole shopping centre was renovated and extended so the interior was fully demolished and rebuilt with the exterior getting a massive makeover at the same time! :)
If you want to see another retro Woolies go to the one at St Ives shopping village, that entire mall is like a nice small mall from the 90s, low ceilings etc, the MacDonald's and the woolies all have the retro look
Also the woolies at Redfern is super old and retro
You should check out the inside of Gosford Woolies. Feels like you're in 1994!
The Woolworths I most fondly remember is the one in the Sydney CBD. I can’t recall how we got there, but it was underground somewhere. I’m sure you of all people know exactly where I am referencing.
Probably town hall
@@fergspan5727 Sounds about right. It was somewhere near Wynyard or Town Hall.
Escalators were the wrong way round as well.
My grandparents lived at Eastwood, so I used to visit this centre a lot in the 80s/90s.
We have one like that in Western Australia. I smile everytime I see the old logo
Booragoon?
Eastwood Centre is owned by the Yuhu group. Yuhu had plans to redevelop the site but their plans stalled when it was reported they had lobbied/influenced a certain (now former) politician. Yuhu occupies the office space above the retail. Most of the shops including Woolies are probably on month-to-month leases. New tenants are unlikely to commit given the possibility of redevelopment, hence why so many old shops remain trading. Eastwood Mall used to be vibrant with quality anchor tenants, but started slowly dying after Macquarie Centre opened in 1981.
I recognised Eastwood straight away - and it's been nearly 30 years since I worked there.. I cant remember going to Woolworths though.
I got an ad for coles watching this 😂
🤣🤣🤣
Cool , I love it 👍I used to work in Eastwood at a Pancake restaurant back in 1969 , I’ll have to visit Eastwood again , it’s like having China town close by, my son is married into a Chinese family , their children are beautiful 😍
I live local and keep meaning to go check this place out. They have been talking for years about knocking that whole shopping centre down
Brings back memories, ive been here,if I remember correctly it was under like a tall building, like the base of one ?centrepoint ?
Woolworths turns 100 this year.
Just feels so weird seeing woolies as something else without the green apple logo.
You should've replied to the curious lady "I'm just scoping out the exits for my heist prep" 😂
The Franklin's you were talking about in the Hawkesbury I'm guessing was the one in Windsor where Woolworths is now. Fond memories
You were putting off checking it out, like they've been putting off upgrading it!
You've brought attention to it, it will probably be renovated soon.
Hey thanks for the vintage vibe of this one, had you not mentioned Eastwood, I would have thought you were in China town.
Wow cool. About time Woolworths renamed themselves Woolies
Woolworths are in the process of refurbishments. Thornleigh Woolworths still has the old Franklin's checkout counters for full lane checkouts but are having their complete refurbishment in October. Quite frankly, I am looking forward to it all looking new.
I work for Woolworths, from the video it looks like most of the inside of the store has had a major refurbishment/remodel
The way to tell if they're stuck in a timewarp is if the freezer section is still in those deep freezers instead the upright fridge-style freezers
Coin trolleys at Woolworths? That's so annoying, thank god my Woolies doesn't have them which we can also use for the nearby ALDI.
Yeah that whole building is ancient, I think part of it caught fire some years ago. I'm surprised a big chain like Woolies has allowed it to be left with the old logo.
Nah. The fire destoryed the old BBC Hardware building between Eastwood Centre carpark ramp and the Masonic Centre.
I was literally there last week! Even took some photos of the old logos at the entrance.
