Just one 'small' correction - this is NOT the first player to introduce 2 layers of playing on a single deck. Some 10 - 15 years ago (yes, that long) DENON DJ's high-end tabletop cd player was called DN-S5000 and was able to play 2 tracks from one disc simultaniously. Back then they called it 'alpha mode'.

I think a great feature would be, during Layer Mode if it could show both waveforms playing on the same screen at the same time.
Also I just read that you can bring in your rekordbox collection on a USB stick and these will be able to use it. GOOD GOD how awesome is that!!!

The d9000 was the first player to have dual outputs. It was called alpha track. Way ahead of its time back in 2002.

      Thanks for that, Scott :-)

Agree. I still have it, and it is still working......the alpha track is still amazing and still works.....at least one of the two CD player sides is working. Denon has always been way ahead of Pioneer, it just never took off in the pro scene. I also had one of the first cdj pioneer players which I loved. Very basic, no frills, but a superior sound over the Denon back in 2001 or 2002. But Denon brought in all of the special features like the cool effects, alpha track for two tracks per deck, sampling, hot cues, loops......in the early 2000's it was unbelievable that I could do that with cd's......now it is common place.

Chris Dugan I agree...Phil says a few times when you come up to these in a club you just plug your usb in and away you go....well that's if the club has these to start with. They are definitely rivals to Pioneer cdj's though.

This is true... HOWEVER, I gotta buddy starting a night club in my area here and I've convinced him entirely that he should just buy these. He was about to drop ~10gs on 5 xdj-2000s whenever those got announced (4 for use and 1 as a backup) but after I told him that the sc5000s work as two independent decks he was sold. now he's only got to buy 3 instead of the 5 (1 for backup 2 for use) which cuts ~5gs out of the equation that he can now spend on a nicer sound system.

This is an extraordinary peace of equipment. Very impressive, indeed! Always liked Denon, and used to play on DN-S 5000, DN-S3500 and DN-S3700, as well as on an old DJ DN-2500F, which had, if I recall, a function called Voice Reducer, which helped while mixing with removing vocal frequencies for easier switch between full vocal tracks when doing the transition. If I was still in the business, I would get this set-up without thinking, because it seems flawless. The only issue I would worry about is the touch-screen reliability, because we are all aware of issues those could have, and bugs that could occur in the software giving us lots of bugs and screen being unresponsive. Having said that, it still is an amazing peace of tech, and I am so happy someone other then Pioneer stepped into the big league, and I hope they get all the credits they deserve with this units!
Oh, and FYI, ability to play 2 tracks on two separate channels has been implemented a loooong, loooong time ago, it was called Alpha Track, and was implemented in DN-S5000. One player could play, manipulate, and mix 2 tracks on 2 separate channels, and you could show up on a gig with only one player. :)
Nice video and presentation, thumbs up. Keep up the good work!
    Greetings from Serbia!

These r pretty cool. Denon needs to make a version of these with the spinning platter for those of us who have been spinning for over 30 yrs. Or maybe us old school guys just need to stick to what we already have.

  • @Heavie486

The Denon DN-D9000 and DN-S5000 was the first denon products to offer playing two of the same or different tracks from the same unit. As a matter of fact the DN-D9000 which I still own and the DN-S5000 achieve this feature using CDs. The Denon HD2500 with the built in 40 gig hard drive, which I also own, was the first media player from denon to offer the layer feature that on the SC5000. Denon always was the first on many features, Pioneer is like Apple. Once consumer get brainwash a product is standard in the tech world. Another brand is hard to compete. You will never get this many feature the SC5000 offer from pioneer gear without buying 2-3 revision of the same model.

I'm Sorry, I mean. The DN-D9000 and the DN-S5000 can play two tracks from the same cd at the same time. The D9000 dual cd deck had 4 set of rca outputs. The S5000 single cd deck had 2 of rca outputs.

The Denon dn hs5500 that I used to have also had 2 decks in one. That was all the way back in 2008. The 2 decks isn't a brand new feature, denon has been killing it with features for years. I never met anybody else that used those players, which is sad because they were wayyyyy ahead of their time.

They have since fixed the inability to set cue and hot cues until the track is analyzed. Very good news.
Between the compressor/limiter, the low-pass filtering, and the heavy processing even when key lock is off and/or pitch is at zero, right now the SC5000 with a lossless 24bit/96khz file sounds arguably no better than a Pioneer playing a 320bps MP3 sourced from a 16bit/32khz lossless audio file.
I think this is the short-term firmware solution for InMusic:
-Add a -6dB attentuation to the SC5000 processing. This is mathematically perfect and simple to impliment, as it just halves the sample amplitudes. Unless they're in 32bit float they need -3dB below full scale, anyway, to prevent intersample peaks, so this would leave a further -3dB of margin beyond that for Elastique to work.
-Get rid of the compressor/limiter in the SC5000 processing, as it will no longer be necessary.
-Allow an option/setting/preference where if you turn keylock off, Elastique processing is completely overrided and bypassed, using only the "maximally minimal" processing needed for simple pitch/speed change.
-Set Elastique's FS/3 setting to FS/2 so that we get frequency bandwidth equivolent to 48khz sampling frequency playback. I suspect that's what's probably causing the treble roll-off equivolent to 96khz sampling frequency divided by three. This is an actual setting mentioned in the Elastique SDK documentation.
Hopefully they also give us the ability to adjust the jog bend, hide some onscreen information in the HUD, disable sync, and do an "owner's lockout" on their settings... aside from your personal jog bend setting and center jog logo on the drive, of course. I'm also hoping we get back the full 14bit pitch resolution from the original firmware.

AWSOME Video. Just wish you could change the Center logo to something more USEFUL. Like a BPM Counter, Pitch Range, or Tempo of some sorts. I know all of this is on the Screen, but seems to be more Eye Catching, and faster reaction if they were actually on the jog wheel. Seems kinda Childish, and bedroomish with images in the center jog wheel. Other than that DENON has truly made a Dream come True👍👍👍..

Excellent review but this is not the first time ever that you could have two separate outputs on a player. Denon also had the model DNHS-5500 that allowed two separate outputs for one player. And the button was called "layer" on that model also. I still own a pair and still play on them from time to time. I bet that the idea came from that past model.

when you do the video on the mixer, do a good part of the effects touch slider, and try and work out the tenth notes, those -/+ 4 step bar markers are good for, most effects on mixers and dj program are all rubbish, being able to stop a mix with a long slow echo and delay will be something new, probably more so if your tech house or trance running a loop with some filter

The time stretch seems to be taking some much higher samples and a ton more samples so as to not demolish the sound like pioneer gear does. My RX2 unit really screws the dynamics or introduces strange phasing because low quality samples and probably no as many so it ends up losing data. Dammit I need a great job where I can afford this whole denon setup... or they could make a non layer version with and no analysis tools on board. would be nice.

I cant see that Pioneer is not going to match and better this Denon release. Surely they don't lack resources or tech ability to incorporate the same technology in their players. All I can add is. . .and maybe I'm just not creative enough, or just missing something . . .but why is nobody including the ability to play Stems onto their setups? I give up, LOL : ))) This is an awesome product though, they certainly raised the bar. I mean if Tiesto and Laidback Luke already made the switch . . .Enough said. : )))

  • @Reticuli
    @Reticuli 6 років тому +1

DSP processing is not transparent even with key lock off and pitch at zero compared to Pioneer. Sounds dark, processed, compressed, and actually kind of similar to Torq 2.0 that had a stunted and inverted-phase impulse response and its low pass filtering mutilated square waves.
v1.0.3 firmware has worse deep pitch resolution than Pioneer or Gemini. The optimal analog-like resolution that is possible and they could shoot for is 2000 increments on a 100mm 14bit pitch fader and dropping the ranges below 0.01 increments. So that'd be 0.1 at 100%, 0.05 at 50%, 0.02 at 20%, and 0.01 at 10%.
Can't set cue or hot cue prior to track analysis. If you do pre-analysis with Engine Prime, then link will only show something like the first 10,000 or so database tracks.
Rearward jog bend sensitivity is good, but forward is twice as sensitive.
This is all resolvable in the firmware, but the sound quality part I am pessimistic they will fix due to their constant boasting of how major touring DJs they are paying to use them aren't complaining. Crossing my fingers, though.

Very nice review thank`s a lot for this. Please allow a detailed question:
are the rca/chinch-outs (analog) concurrently to be used with the rca/spdif-outs?
I would like to connect the analogs into the X1800 Prime and the spdif`s into another digital mixer for recording purposes. This woul require both out`s (analog and spdif) to provide a signal concurrently - is this possible, does this work?
This would help to avoid a splitter which would be really nice..
thank you very much in advance ;=)

It will be interesting to see pioneers next Cdj, but what will they charge for it???? 2 nxs2 decks are £1000 more than 2 of the new denons as it is. They need to up their game and drop their prices at the same time. Do they not realise that a lot of bars and clubs these days don't even provide gear in their dj boxes anymore, because there's so many different controllers etc, and djs now like to use their own gear. Why spend £4000 on decks if your dj turns up with a £100 controller and doesn't use them?!

Hey! I have been using a controller for a while now and it's about time I need to upgrade to some players. I have an RMX-60 mixer. I was wondering if I should get XDJ-1000 MK2s or SC5000s. I can't get the X1800 Denon mixer. I was just worrying the Denon gear is to similar to a controller. So what should I get and is the Denon stuff to similar to a controller? Remember I can't get a Denon mixer and I will be using a RMX-60 mixer.

Well if this can run Rekordbox, I will 100000% buy it. It has 8 hot cues, very nice jog wheel, good screen, 2 channels in 1 deck, it will save us alot of money instead of buy 4 CDJ 2000NXS2. But It doesn't work with Rekordbox so... Wait for the CDJ 3000 (2000NXS3, or maybe 3000NXS)

    • @digitaldjtips

I'm really torn between this and an SC5000M ... I will do some more contemplating. ...
these have nearly everything I could imagine using them for built in, and if used with Serato they have controls for nearly everything I use in Serato, except one small thing.... no sampler bank controls.
this wouldn't be a huge issue if I'm using one alongside my Denon MC7000... and if I ended up with a pair, and mixer, and was using Serato still, then I would find a workaround. Keyboard shortcuts, mouse clicks, or a Reloop Neon or something of the sort... unless the mixer had sampler controls. ....
I have a few things further up on my list, so I will have time to research mixers, and also decide on the 5000 vs 5000M in the meantime. Any advice on a good 2ch mixer to use these alongside, either with or without Serato? I'd mainly be looking for filters, but an Echo would be nice too... if I went with Serato I'd likely use it alongside the MC7000, so I'm kinda looking for a solution to use one of these with the dual decks and a mixer, without the laptop... (someday I'd get a second one)
thanks as usual for all the DDJT content.

Hi sir I'm in quite a dilemma in regards of these units and this is why.
Prior to 3 months ago they used to be on my list of toys to purchase but now the New sc6000 has been release i am wondering if it is a smart thing to adopt these instead of the New one and this is where the dilemma lies.
I found floor models here in Montréal Canada for 1000 cad dollars a piece instead of 1900 cad dollars for the New one.
Although i dont care for the larger screen wich looks kind of weird to my eyes the only thing i like about the New ones is the larger jog wheel and the hardrive bay. Do you think getting 2 x sc5000 for the price of 1 x sc6000 is worth it for future proof purposes and for the extra percks listed above
Or the sc5000 which was my dream player now at half price is Just good enough and spend 2000$ on having 2 players instead of 1 a better deal.
Please help me make up my mind sir your wiser Than us gearholics.
Id like to make the smart buy rather Than the emotions based this time around.
Do you happen to know if the internal of both units are the same like cpu inside them that would also be help full in order to make the smart buy as well. These Unit rely on that cpu and is the driving force.
Sorry for the long question and i thank you in advance.

Engine prime isn't a performance software. To use DVS you'll still require either Serato or Traktor. I'm not entirely certain if the x1800 has serato dvs support built in as it's not listed on the hardware section of the serato website, but I would be surprised if it didn't as my MC7000 has dvs support built right in. Otherwise I'm sure you've already got a DVS enabled audio card that you've been useing, and that should hook up just like any other dvs setup

2 years after - no club has adopted them - why ? - because they are unreliable piece of crap. I don’t care about layers if jog wheel is nightmare to use. I don’t care about big screen if it all glitches and bugs. Denon customer support is pretty bad, after they release new product, old one is forgotten (and depriciated, prices are halved) and it’s all “it will come in future update”... And guess what - it does not happen. Yeah, reviews and 5 minute tests are ok, but investing in this or buying it for the club - no thanks ! PS I’m not Pioneer fan, I think their products are silly overpriced, their customer support is bad, too - but with no competition they would sell CDJ even if they were 4K each.
