Madonna is such a lyrics recycler !! I adore her all the more. I had this song on a CD that a friend borrowed and never returned so, THANKS A MILLION for posting it.
@@ReubenWalton The chorus and second verse of this song is used as the first verse of Stay, but you’re never gonna hear me say goodbye is replaced with “I’ll always want you to stay”
I bought the CD PreMadonna and this song and Laugh to Keep from Crying are my favorite tracks. Thanks for posting this so others can enjoy these demos since otherwise they may never have found out about them. This CD proved she had commercial potential just like the song Lucky Star.
I've been a fan of this goddess of music for 40 years now, and I get so excited when I discover new stuff that I didn't know about. Or should I say old stuff LOL some of her early stuff is so good yet so raw, definitely something that would have totally fit on her first album
This song is totally consistent with the sound of the first album. It's quite catchy--a combination of funk and new wave. They should have included it, especially since there's only eight tracks on the album. With a little tweaking it would also fit on "Hard Candy." What goes around comes around, eh? :-)
The sound of this song has actually very few in common with the first album. It was dominated by synthetic sounds and drum machine rhythms, whereas this song has a completely different, "handmade" live sound of funk/new wave, as you correctly mentioned.
Well it's a 1980 song. Most pop songs that came out that year have that funk/new wave vibes. Pop music didn't really start sounding like just pop like we recognize today until 1982. But from 1979 to 81, all the pop songs are gonna have a blend of Disco/Funk/New Wave.
One of her many ex-boyfriends produced this track along with "Everybody" and two other songs. Madonna wouldn't even mention Steve's name until the record label told her that she HAD to give him credit for his work. I consider this Steve a genius and the actual creator of THE 80ies sound.
Its false information forgive me but the fact that Mark Kamins introduce her to Sire records and made a deal to reproduce her demos so it was not a Madonna’s décision but the record compagny and she have to compromise but after the success of her 1st album, she imposes Stephen (aka Steeve) Bray and for her 3 next albums like a virgin, true blue and like a prayer !
What an assh*le you are and also everyone who liked your stupid comment. Even Seymour Stein acknowledge Madonna's talent in his book. The one who consistently made and gave great music to the world BEYOND just the 80's, beyond the 90's too and even beyond the 00's is MADONNA, NOT her "ex- boyfriends" and especially not a talentless nobody like you.
And if dummies like Gaga or Beyonce ever recordered this song, you would shamelessly praise them as "geniuses". I understand how Madonna-hating scums function. They have always infested the world.
@@yaya7594 Really? I don't think it's that clear. Though clearly and excellent melody writer at the time she considered herself the major creator of the music as a result which was clearly very wrong since before Steve bray she was just a chrissy hine rip off and my research suggests she was very much happy to totally wipe bray out and he was not best pleased hence refusing further permission. I don't know. You could be right. But I definitely get the feeling she was a massively impulsive and desperately needy person and basically a bit of a child or even a vampire so I wouldn't put it beyond her. But damn, that lyric and melody writing! It's like mozart it's so intuitively developed and just gets the perfect balance between interest and repetition. And the voice, little sexy girl from down town - just utterly devastating.
Another great rare lost fantastc upbeat dance song that was never released? What happened? This superb ultra dance song could/would have sored way up to possibly number one on the radio dance songs. It's quitw pity & shameful, to whoever made the decision to not have & given it's merit to have become a huge populat dance hit.

@vdwest4592 pre-madonna was the album that it was released on. this and the stay '81 became stay on "like a virgin." There was also "laugh to keep from crying" where she sounds like Chrissie Hynde from the pretenders. There are also great versions of burning up and everybody.
Reggie Lucas, Mark Kamins (producers), (John) Jellybean Benitez (remixer) and many more helped Madonna create her first album (by Sire Records); "Vision Quest" film OST tracks, & "You Can Dance." Highly Talented People like Stephen Bray (of the group The Breakfast Club; in which Madonna was a part of: they sung the "Right on Track" song; he helped produce "Into The Groove" (for the 'Desperately Seeking Susan' film); Chic's band member Nile Rodgers, Trevor Horn (the Art of Noise producer) and countless various writers and producers helped Miss M on the newer albums: "Like a Virgin," and "True Blue."
Yeah it does sound like Prince from the Dirty Mind Era. I wouldn't be surprised if he was involved in remixes of her music from that period or even met this early on. Because at the time while this song was made, Prince was staying in New York around this time. So it would be a coincidence.
The song sounds like a transition of the disco era (70's) to the 80's. I love it!
Don't sound like stay demo nor the LP version they are two diffirent songs with diffirent sounds .
It has that similar factor like Prince's Dirty Mind.

Problems with the guy who did the music. Not all his fault it seems.
@@communication001 what’s not all his fault?
It was reworked and became Stay, the final track on Like A Virgin LP
This was turned into the song "Stay" on the album "Like a Virgin".
I'm so sad it's not on spotify
0:10 - 0:24 Lines later used in Stay (Like A Virgin)
This is Madonna I love!
No sabía que Madonna tenía canciones tan bonitas con talento para la música es hasta ahora la mejor
i like her little vocal 2:01 to 2:06 is sublime I heard this song for the first time today...it is growing on me already and so is Stay '81 demo

Yeah it kinda sounds more like a Teena Marie production compared to Madonna’s first album.
I think it's quite detroit techno.
I think this is actual drums cause she played the guitar and drums on her demos

You, you make my life much bright, baby
You're always on my mind
Don't you know you, you make my load much light, baby
True love is ours to find
You came along when I was losing my way
You touched my heart and now I'm ready to say
That all your sweetness callin' back ugly skies
And now I've fallen for the look in your eyes
I couldn't ask for more
You're what I'm looking for
Oh
[chorus]
Sometimes I feel I have to get away
I change my mind when I look in your eyes
And when those clouds come in to darken our day
You're never gonna hear me say good-bye
I couldn't ask for more
You're what I'm looking for
Oh
