I grew up with 4 big dogs and love them too! I love that you and your wife are working to regain her health
Your message today has me pondering (as always)... it's easy to look at work vs. leisure time as a black and white thing. This hustle culture viewpoint. I fall into this thinking sometimes. I think we all do until we know better
But I have found that spending time with myself and pursuing different things has given me Soo much insight on my own nature, my own soul, and what is worth pursuing!
    And YAY another book 👀

The guilt we feel is implanted by society. There is a reason why the education system is designed to breed workers, not creative thinkers or problem solvers. It seems that a person is only 'valuable' if they are productive in a way that benefits capitalism.

I am on leave from my corporate job to take care of my mother who has terminal cancer. I am 43 years old and I feel no guilt at all to my employer. I have a brother but he does not help one bit. I know I have a strong character and this is something that has nothing to do with how you were raised, it is something you are born with. I have 14-16 hour days caring for her. Changing soiled bed linens, tending to wounds, giving her white blood cell shots, red blood cell shots, IV’s of fluids, medications. Feeding her and soothing her when she has hallucinations or break downs because of what is. I would do this all again, the work of life because she gave me life, all her love and a wonderful childhood.

Totally agree with the "work of life" concept here. I just graduated from college and am undertaking the beginning of my career in one of the major financial industries. I am not perceiving this job as my identity or what I will concretely be doing for the next 40 years, wishing my time away until retirement. I just am using it as a conduit to live in a big city (moving to Chicago after living in a small town in Florida my whole life) and get out of my comfort zone and experience and explore the world. I am not picturing my joy coming from clocking out of the office just to go home and sit on my couch. The real work begins AFTER I clock out. That is my time to explore, talk to strangers, read, write, paint, create, run, play, feel, and have fun, in an active and intentional manner. This is my real identity and will define my life as I go through this continual process of becoming. I just have to do it with empathy, honesty, and courage as the source, not fear and loathing.

My heart ❤just leaped 50,000 feet into the air when I saw your doggie!
She appears into your life when the Universe says, you are ready to grow and to learn new things! Guilt is only a signal in this case of your desires to do well in all the things you desire to keep at, but love is something we learn from the small things hidden! “When the student is ready, the teacher appears.” 😁🐶When a mother has children (puppies, in this case), she loves them fully. Especially animals! Your love, your kindness, your patience and protection of her affirms her. You are and will be rewarded for these sacrifices in the work of life. These engagements will bring many blessings to you and your wife. You’re such a light, with a sound mind. Many of us experience the guilt you mentioned, and these words are like a salve to the soul. It is very exciting to see you grow and your wife along side , and to share this with us, so we can grow, too! 💕Thank you! We’re glad you both opened that door! 🚪

Most of us are led to believe that the more work you can show, the better your life becomes. That is why most of us feel guilty for not doing something that adds up to that equation every single day. Even so, the fact that we get burnt out/depressed following this protocol, indicates that there's something wrong with it. So, everyone, let's find our actual work of life instead. I’ve saved so many and every time I donate or rescue, the life offers me so much more in return! The reason why this world is so messed up is because of people who pass by and are indifferent to any life other than themselves. The lack of empathy in humans is astonishing.

I hope her puppies are safe, mmmh quite sure they bumped her and sold the babies right away :(. Sure she ll be happy with Sister Layla. The work of life should be the essence of our existence, and this can be achieved when we lose track of time, where time is actually suspended. how comes at each funeral we speak about the person qualities only and her “nobility of soul” not her career or what she owned, or what she did. Very significant.

That's just beautiful ❤ it brought a tear to my eyes picturing the state she must have been in but also that you went the extra mile to save her. I had a Yorkshire terrier Lucca who had to go over the rainbow Dec. 2022 - I was with him until the end - the final act of love - and brought him
home to be buried in the garden - I couldn't bear to leave him to be processed at the vets. In 2023 January I got a puppy a mini Yorkshire Terrier and since Lucca was 13 when he had to go i was also "challenged" for want of a better word with caring for this little scrap of life who was terrified of even going out in my arms to the garden. But it has been worth it - he's not afraid of anything and loves people - all people and he makes them smile. Dogs he's indifferent to - don't know about that one. He comes on the bus with me - I don't drive and is such a "happy chappy" - it's pure joy. I learned something else with this video - I didn't watch it when it popped up previously because of the title 🤦 now I know anything you have or will post will be worth watching! AND a book recommendation! Who could ask for more! Thank you 😊 from Scotland.

She's a gorgeous dog, similar colors to my pit bull mix, Xena warrior princess. They are such huge lovers, I can't imagine fostering and allowing someone to then come and adopt a dog. I fostered once, and it was so hard to see him go. But, thank you for what you are doing. It seems easier for many of us to actively participate in rescuing a cute animal in need - somehow seeing value in its non-productive life, rather than expending effort to rescue a dirty, washed up human being and seeing value in their life, helping them be a productive member of society. In fact, we far too easily abandon people just for having a differing opinion from ours, and make them our enemy, ultimately wishing for their demise - aiding that when possible. I don't think anything was different in the days of Epictetus, Seneca or Aristotle. I don't think things were better for the boomer generation, or the generation before them. There will always be people in our connected enmeshment of being human who we will not lend a hand to, not see as equal in value to ourselves. As you mentioned, can you really support justice (as a lawyer, judge) as a value if you don't support justice outside of the courtroom, in your every day life? Then this of course begs the question I wrestle with constantly: what defines life's value? Is an infant as valuable as a mid-life CEO? Are they equal, do they deserve the same justice, fairness, human rights? When does a life have value, or is it intrinsic? Does a life's value actually increase or decrease through actions, words, empathy/sympathy, abilities? Or, is the amount of value a life has constant, and all the rest is icing on the cake - civil duty, passion, purpose? I wrestle with this as the rejected stone, the unwanted. Was my value only in what I could do for others, and the benefits they received as a result? Where is my justice, my fairness - acceptance, even? How do we measure a life's value? Are we constantly changing the measurement standard, the ruler by which we measure?

This is a very thought provoking subject... the point made about societies concepts of what is considered acceptable and standard shifts over time. To be shamed or feel shame based on these shifting global concepts of how to live your life - is it really for our betterment, I think not.
I understand the difficulties and great friction that can be caused in going against widely socialised concepts of work and leisure which is most likely why people are too afraid to live a life that is truly authentic to themselves and their 'work of life'.

Great topic to cover today! I definitely have been struggling with the concept of feeling undervalued based on my financial or career circumstances, and have been in the process of shifting my worth based on my values and character instead. Still figuring it all out, and having insights such as yours goes a long way in helping me get closer to who I want to be so thank you.

I have solved this dilema years ago. I have no problem living my life completely open to what calls me out. I rarely make plans.
I like you even more for what you did for this mom and her babies. That makes you beautiful inside. She's very thankful to you. And so am I.

I've only yet watched half of this video but feel compelled to share Viktor Frankl's concept of how it's not the job you do that matters, as much as how you do that job. In his book 'The Doctor and the Soul', he elicits from the example of surgeons. Surgeon A mechanically goes about his job, treating it as a chore, comes home, binges TV, sloths around, goes to sleep and repeats the cycle tomorrow. Surgeon B is aware of the mighty meaning of his work every single day, and hence offers an extra word of counselling to his patients' attendants, ensures he supports his staff, goes home and reflects on how to do better tomorrow. The job title is the same, the level of life satisfaction completely different.

Reminds me of a song He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother by The Hollies. Our brother is all living beings. Count it all joy to be able to help. The Tao says something like "Good deeds are done and forgotten and therefore last forever." I think that means It's just what we do. When that wonderful creature thanks you for helping: "It's just what we do, thank you for letting us help you ❤"

I have often reflected that the animals in my life, and I have adopted quite a few over the years, have been my greatest teachers. Your story about finding this beautiful dog perfectly illustrates how the work of life can work through us when we take the time and care to properly respond to things and to those around us (including our animal kin). Thank you again for the "work" you are doing here : ) Greetings from Fara in Sabina, Italy.
