A lot of people forget that this tournament used to take place the same weekend as the match play. And the Sunday has always had to compete with the Super Bowl. So with a lot of the most popular golfers not there, they loosened up the rules to attract fans. But now, with no match play, they never scaled things back!
This past year, they were tossing beers on the green seemingly every other good shot, rather than just a hole in one. Dozens of people were hospitalized. It needs to keep its fun atmosphere but scale it back to how it was just a couple years ago
Golf and Weed (in my opinion) were made by god to be enjoyed together. Getting baked and playing a round is one of lifes absolute pleasures. I just feel like im a part of the game.
It’s a great example of sports being ruined by money. Football, basketball and baseball has only gotten more expensive and the game has changed just so the players and owners/league can make more money. I hate the pitch clock and bat tossing after a home run and the over the top celebrations.
INHO it started waaay back with "you da man" and has gone down from there to "go in the hole" shouted in the downswing of a tee shot on par 5. When the PGA and officials refuse to do anything about it, this is what you get.
I was recently at the Boeing Classic this year and their was a hole next to the T-Mobile clubhouse where all the drunk old people were and at one point one of the players had to stop and wait for everyone to shut up. As soon as it was quiet another drunk female had to start yapping again for attention. It was beyond annoying and disrespectful. I think humans are losing their morals more and more every year.
The PGA is way too stodgy. Hardly anyone remembers who won the 2013 Charles Schwab (Kenny Perry, btw) but everyone remembers Tiger dropping a hole in one in front of 20,000 ASU students on 16 in 1997. The reason they remember that is because of the atmosphere. Get rid of the dumbass box seats and get back to what makes TPC Scottsdale the most exciting course in the PGA schedule.
I have attended this tournament 3 times. No argument that they need to control and arrest the drunks immediately. Keep in mind though that a lot of non-golf fans attend for the party, but turn into true fans after seeing how good these guys are in person. The PGA needs young fans, no?
One reason, not mentioned, is that the super bowl is always the same Sunday. With 2hour time difference, from start of sb, the fans continue their party. It’s a 24 hour blow out.

As someone who has been going to the Phoenix Open (WMO) since I was a kid, it's nothing like the great tournaments I remembered growing up. The crowd was loud but respectful. People were there for the golf. It was truly a great viewing experience. Nowadays, I wouldn't go anywhere near that event. On top of the insane crowds, the frat environment that has culminated in the last five years has killed any enjoyment. It's nearly impossible to watch golf unless you're in a sky box. It went from a few people that I knew were interested in going to EVERY SINGLE PERSON. I don't mind it growing in popularity but it attracted the absolute worst crowds imaginable for golf Golf needs new fans but these people aren't longterm fans. Far from it.
My company gets a suite at 16 every year. Because it’s a professional event I can’t drink too much, but I wish I was able to! I can totally see why everyone got upset after the 2024 tournament, but I love the trip so I hope they keep it going
Leave it for one tournament. Everyone is having a good time. If a golfer doesn’t like it, they don’t have to play. Not required to play in every tournament 🤷🏼♂️
The open is actually a useful release valve, it allows the golfers and fans to vent the dread of having dedicated their whole lives to undoubtedly the most boring sport known across the universe.
Idk if you mentioned it but at around 12 the ticket workers just started letting hundreds of people in for free not checking any tickets. Had to wait in a 2 hour line to take a piss

Focusing on one hole (16th) and one day (Saturday) Go on Sunday and it's a regular tourney. They stopped keeping track publicity on crowd sizes each day. Halting alcohol sales around the 16th at peak times. If you go to hole 2, it's a ghost town and a completely chill environment, maybe that's a better spot for people who don't like it.

Golfing events have their own culture. That's a good thing. You want crazy? Watch the Phoenix Open. You want old school class? Watch The Masters. Bottom line. You decide. Don't let others do it for you.
All fans entering must have a valid identification card, the golf course will scan it, put it in their database, to keep track of the bad fans when they get kicked out. Then put a 100 high foot fence around the stadium to keep the fans and trash off the course. Basically a big cage. The fans will still go to the event.
Professionals need to be more professional. If you are at the top level of golf and youre actually listening to the crowd, why? Tune it out. Listen to your iner monologue. Im telling myself so many things in my swing that i dont care if people are talking because it wont register. Its just background noise.
