How to reset (recalibrate) the hands on a chronograph watch - Watch and Learn #30

  • In today's episode of Watch and Learn, we will show you how to reset (or re-calibrate) the hands of your quartz chronograph watch. Many times, either after changing the battery, or in transit, the hands do not go back to their proper "zero" positions. Most chronograph movements have a method you can use to put the hands back in their proper positions.
Save yourself some frustration and possibly a trip to the jewelry store by watching this quick video.
Please visit our store at www.longislandwatch.com to see the watches shown in this video, and view our entire selection.

This video saved my sense of security. The hands on my Swiss movements were out of whack and I thought I had to take the movement out and take the crystal off, all kinds of shit. This is the best video I've ever found on UA-cam. Life saving.

That’s it. I finally searched for it. Came across this video. Tried the first method and it worked. At least 4 years of just sitting on a non zero set subdials and being slightly annoyed, I fixed and all thanks to you.

The sweephand stops and the bottom sundial keeps going? I wand the sweephand to keep going and the subdial to stop. Any ideas?

Another excellent W&L. I had a Victorinox chronograph with an ETA quartz movement in it that was off for years and it drove me nuts. There was no mention whatsoever in the user manual of a reset procedure, but fortunately one day I happened across a UA-cam video that explained the process. It's now spot-on, but now I know even more about the subject and the subtle differences among movements. Thanks, Marc!

Thank you Mark! I changed the battery and gasket on a Seiko quartz chronograph 7T94-0BG0 and then noticed the 60 min timer was off after. Thought I too was going to have to live with it. Your video was great. I will order my next Bambino and other watches from you. Thanks again. Enjoy your videos very much!

I've been digging through some of your Watch and Learn videos and learned quite some stuff. Now, someone mentioned this video as a comment on a recent Random Rob video. As I recently got a preowned Seiko Flightmaster with a slightly misaligned seconds hand, I had to search this tutorial out.
Many thanks a few years afterwards, this was very helpful as usual. I also of course hope you'll imagine new helpful stuff to put out in your Watch and Learn series. Thanks again!

Just received a new Seiko reissue from you, the SSC569, and the stopwatch second hand was +8 seconds. I checked the manual, the instructions were there, but I wasn't following them correctly. Checked a few other videos, no luck, see this WL#30, get the hand reset in as much time as it took you to explain it. Awesome! Nor my first reissue from you and won't be my last. Also bought a couple of Orient's from you as well. Keep up the great work!

Once again, thank you. Pulled out my Tag Aquaracer manual and there it was. I never liked the minute counter, always at a slight tilt. What is funny is I just got it back from Tag for some minor repairs after 10 years of use and they didn't align the hands back to perfect zero. I didn't ask them, I figured it was just a tiny bit crooked, no big deal. But still it bothered me just a little. Now it's all squared up and looking perfect. Thank you. Soon I will have to go to your Web page and shop around to repay the favor.

You're a lifesaver mate. My solar Orient Neo70s (WV0041TX) chrono dials haven't been resetting correctly since I let it wind down, and I just couldn't find how to reset it - looked for instructions online (it's a JDM so they're hard to find) tried every version of crown and buttons I could think of. Turns out it has a Seiko v175 inside just like the Seiko you showed, and that worked great.

Hey Mark - Very helpful! I was helping out my brother by changing the dead battery in his Relic brand chronograph watch ( w/ a Seiko VD57 movement). He no longer has the original manual for the watch, and I've not been able to find one online (there maybe some awesome web sleuths out there who can, but I couldn't). I found some literature on the movement itself, but it didn't talk about resetting the various chrono subdials. Once you demonstrated the technique, I was able to get all 3 sub-dials back to their proper alignment.
    Many thanks for the video!
