  • The Schwebefähre Rendsburg (literal Translation "Suspended Ferry" or "Aerial Ferry") is one of the last eight Transporter Bridges (also known as "Ferry Bridge") in the World. It crosses the Kiel Canal in Northern Germany, and on it, the Hamburg-Flensburg Rail Line crosses the Kiel Canal too. This makes it the only Transporter Bridge that doubles as Train Bridge.

I don't agree with UA-cam hiding Dislikes. 21 Likes, 1 Dislike, 2022-08-28. Just so you know what to expect from this Video.
Some additional Informations because I sort of presupposed you to have watched Tom Scott's Video: Transporter Bridges were usually built on on Tidal Rivers, which fall dry at low Tide. The Tidal Currents themselves aren't much of a Problem for conventional Ferries, but if the River turns into a silty Mudhole at Low Tide, only a Hovercraft might work. 18 Transporter Bridges were built between 1893 and 1916, but they quickly fell out of Favour because they are expensive to build and maintain, and have a very low Capacity. Today, it is easier to tunnel under such Rivers, and Cars having replaced Horses made long Ramps much less inconvenient than they were back then.
You may also have noticed that my Number of surviving Transporter Bridges doesn't quite add up. I changed my Script a couple of Times, because that Number is not all that easy to determine, and apparently the Number of Edits varies throughout my Script. The two qustionable Bridges are the Warrington Transporter Bridge in England, which still exists but is out of Order since 1964 and the Puente Nicolas Avellanada in Buenos Aires/Argentinia, which usually is a Lifting Bridge and only becomes a Transporter Bridge during Maintenance on the Lifting Mechanism. There also is the Aerial Lift Bridge in Duluth/USA, which has been converted to a Lift Bridge in 1929, but I never counted that one in at any Point of my many Edits.
Here's a complete List of all Transporter Bridges around the World:
    In Service:
Puente Transbordador Nicolas Avellanada, Buenos Aires/Argentinia
    Schwebefähre Osten-Hemmoor, Hemmoor/Germany
    Schwebefähre Rendsburg, Rendsburg/Germany
    Middlesbrough Transporter Bridge, Middlesbrough/England
    Pont Transbordeur Rochefort, Rochefort/France
    Puente de Vizcaya, Bilbao/Spain
    Newport Transporter Bridge, Newport/Wales
    Questionable:
    Puente Nicolas Avellanada, Buenos Aires/Argentinia
    Warrington Transporter Bridge, Warrington/England
    Aerial Lift Bridge, Duluth/USA
    Demolished:
    Bizerta/Tunisia, relocated to Brest/France in 1909
    Kiel/Germany, demolished in 1923
Rio de Janeiro/Brasil, demolished in 1935
    Rouen/France, destroyed in 1940
    Marseille/France, destroyed in 1944
    Brest/France, demolished in 1947
    Nantes/France, demolished in 1958
    Runcorn/England, demolsihed in 1961

I wanted to include more Footage of me speaking in Front of the Camera, but I'm just terrible at that. I included the first Clip because I found it funny, perhaps I'll make a Voiceover Outtake Compilation some Day. That Video would probably be demonetised, for my extensive Use of "Sentence Enhancers" as Spongebob would say.
I tried speaking to the Camera again for a similar Video about the Wuppertal Suspension Railway. I recorded that on my 26th Birthday roughly three Months ago, but haven't even started editing yet as I was too busy with Final Exams, Job Applications and moving House.
I'm planning another similar Video about the Lindaunus Bridge between Kiel and Flensburg, a Bascule Bridge shared by Cars and Trains (totally not inspired by Tom Scott). Two more similar Videos that I'd like to make are the Niederfinow Boat Lift, and the Schauinsland Cable Car. I made Videos of both of them already, but would like to make better ones with behind the Scenes Footage and Voiceover Explanations.

Very interesting! I have been over this bridge many times in the 1990s going between Hamburg and Flensburg and had no idea there was a cable transporter platform...thing below lol. Thanks for posting!

You can see its Rails when looking out of the Train Window. I tried recording them that Way, but the Bridge Girders constantly moving through the Image and the dirty (as always) Train Windows made that Footage unusable.
