I had the great good fortune of hearing Ms.Norman sing this live at the Fairfield Halls Croydon on 8th April 1974, (alongside Margaret Price) in a full performance of Mahler's Resurrection symphony with the LSO under James Levine. She was younger then, and perhaps at the peak of her powers. I was in the front row, and I've never forgotten it. One of the most beautiful things I have ever heard.
This was on 23 or 24 June 1983 during the Festival of Saint-Denis (close to Paris); Jessye Norman, Sheila Armstrong, Choir of Radio France and Orchestre National de France were conducted by Seiji Ozawa. One of the best performance I've ever heard of Mahler 2 and that I taped in the early 90s during a radio broadcast. Ten years later I wrote to France Musique (French public radio for classical music) to ask them to broadcast it again and they did! That gave me the opportunity to record it on CD.
We were fortunate, that you came into our lives and showered us with this amazing voice. Every time you sang it was a painting that was pure beauty. Truly an American treasure to the world.
Silfredo Serrano I was literally thinking the same thing! There’s a clip of her singing Senta’s Ballad and the voice was as majestic and haunting as yes: a pipe organ!
Next time an opera fiend insists that Norman is a soprano, send him here, The most beautiful comfortable tones of her instrument are that of a mezzo, and I love every phrase.
Miss Norman has always had a very wide range. She is not only a soprano but also a mezzo. A good example of her upper range is the Richard Strauss's Vier letzte Lieder.
