Yousician is kind of like a music teacher inside your computer and it can help you learn the guitar, bass guitar, ukulele, and voice. I've tried yousician for the last week and I put together a list of pros and cons from a musicians perspective to see if yousician is right for you to learn the guitar.

I'm using yousician to learn, my parents are getting into guitar too and we all use yousician.
Think it's a great software for building speed and skills, but not for learning the songs.
I dont think you learn songs unless you memorize them yourself, and UA-cam is better for that, but for building speed and skill it's an excellent software.
If you want to play with friends tho, Rocksmith 2014 is the best other alternative.

Well I'm not insanely good but I got a few cords down and there's still a few I have yet to learn on yousician. A few power chords but I haven't mastered them completely. And my strumming speed is pretty good but I still have long way to go
That's why I said "good". I'm not quite a beginner but I'm also not an expert
As a 20 year old who used it for about 60 hours, I can say it helped tremendously. I’ve become a pretty skilled player in only a year. It’s not meant for teaching you things that you necessarily want to play but it gets your fingers playing a ton of notes and it builds the muscle and the calluses needed for becoming a great musician. Between that and learning a bunch of stuff off UA-cam, I don’t think I’d be where I am today without it. Learning guitar is a grind no matter how you approach it but this app keeps you focused as a beginner.

Can you tell me how to make it recognize the notes I play? Cos I play the notes pretty clearly and it still doesn’t register sometimes
@@BlazeM23Are you sure your guitar is in tune? Maybe put the laptop or the device you're using a little bit closer. I had the opposite problem with simply piano, where the app would recognise even the incorrect notes as correct, so it was technically useless, not sure if yousician is any better

I'm an older man learning guitar. I bought Yousician basic plan. I've had it for about 5 months now and I am making fairly good progress. The main thing it has taught me is chord changes and playing individual notes up and down the fretboard. Yousician sort of forces me to practice with structure. Right now, my opinion of Yousician is ....it's pretty good!

I'm old. Back in '78 when I started playing I found that hanging out with good guitar players and watching them was a good way to learn. I suggest learning your basic major and minor chords first and practicing how to switch chords smoothly. Single note stuff is putting the cart before the horse. Once you can play chords pretty decent then you can work towards playing lead stuff. Another suggestion is to pick a song you really love and learn it before moving on to another one. You will learn faster by not overwhelming yourself with too much. Playing guitar is hard. It takes a while before you can play a chord that doesn't sound like ass. Be patient. Keep it simple at first. Almost all rock music songs are three or four chords max. When I started there was no internet. Now things are much easier. Just about any song you want to learn you can find lessons on UA-cam where they're pretty good at breaking a song down. You can find lessons for the solos after you learn the rhythm. Don't get hung up on playing something exactly like someone else. I can break down about any rock song in a few minutes by listening to it. UA-cam can be very helpful when there's a chord I just can't quite figure out. It's especially helpful when learning solos. When I want to learn a song quickly I usually check out how several people play a solo and pick different things from different people because I like the way this guy plays this part or that guy plays another part. If you can hum it you can play it. It's that simple. Playing lead for most songs is about learning what I call basic rock manouvers. Hotel California is a good song to learn the lead for someone who doesn't have a lot of experience. It's not too fast and is chock full of those manouvers. Playing songs note for note will only get you hung up and frustrated. When you get enough experience you can fake your way through a lot of songs by just capturing the guitar player's style and feel. Have fun and practice

@@TheHUhelps My pleasure. My biggest piece of advice is to be patient and don't get hung up on trying to be what you're not. I'm never gonna be Yngwie. I'm ok with that. If you can play songs that sound good don't stress about it. Figure out what you're good at and you'll be fine. The most important thing is to be able to play solid rhythm and be tight with the drummer and bassist. Most guys who put a band together start off playing covers. Don't get hung up on a song that isn't coming together. When you're trying to put 40 songs together don't spend two or three months on a song. Every artist/band has lots of material to choose from. If you're not comfortable that you can execute a song consistently in front of people, scrap it and try something different from that particular artist. No one needs to know how the sausage is made they just need to know it tastes good

I've been using Yousician for about 3 months on the paid subscription. I'm working on unlocking level 6 on the lead and working on gold starring American Pie on level 5 of the rhythm track. I like the app a lot, I think because I've played a lot of video games and I'm a perfectionist and completionist when it comes to that. It gets to me when I don't have a song gold starred, so I'll go back and keep doing it over and over until I get it. I can look back even a month ago and remember how I played then and feel that I've progressed quite a lot, so I'm happy with it. I still only know a couple power chords, but I have the open cowboy chords down pretty solid. The hardest thing is maintaining discipline on your technique and making sure you're taking things like musicality and movement economy into account because the app doesn't teach you that (at least at my stage.) It may come later, though, for example different strumming patterns did come later on and I thought that would be something I would have to learn myself. The structure and not having to sort through all the UA-cam videos out there is a huge plus for me.
Thanks for your input Joshua, it's nice hearing the opinion from someone actively using it like yourself. I can imagine the structure of having all the videos sorted so you don't have to weed through youtube being very helpful, I found this a huge benefit too.

I've only just started using yousician 2 weeks ago and I love it. I did some classes 12 years ago but wasnt great at practicing by myself.
I find that, apart from songs I've learned almost by accident from playing along so much, I wonder what's the point of spending a couple hours a day practicing when I'm not learning songs the same way I would in a class with a teacher.
Despite that, I think it's great, and I find it easy enough to learn from, and challenging enough to keep me interested, that I'm more likely to pick up my guitar and practice.
The levels and gold start system helps me aim to a certain standard - I think I wouldn't keep in time as much, and would slow down, if I'm just playing for myself so the fact that I'm playing along forces me to get quicker.
I'll start a new song or section and I might hate what I'm doing to some extent - I didn't like power chords at all ha - so my initial aim is to just get through the challenge so that I can move on to something better, but I'll always go back and try to get the gold stars, and in the course of doing so, realise how easy I find something I thought I'd never learn a couple of days ago.
Obvs that's also motivated by me wanting to be good guitar player.
I love yousician for the moment at least. I am a beginner, and I like the majority of the songs on the app. I'll probably use UA-cam videos as well at some point but I want something with a curriculum, and UA-cam can't listen to what I'm doing.
Just on your point about plucking as a first lesson and missing the beat. The ball is there as a guide to when to pluck or strum; its def easier if you know the song but I think easy to pick up the beat and where notes are meant to be anyway.
And I think plucking strings before chords seems okay imo because it starts to break down the different notes you get from the instrument. They go into learning the notes along the fretboard which I like.
I can see how it might be limiting after a while from having looked at the singing lessons (I'm a trained soprano), I'll have to look a little more at how much they have, but when you can open an app like that and get all gold stars on a supposedly difficult song, you're not gonna be compelled to use it to improve.
The think I dislike about it is the ear games. Apart from how annoying the sounds get every time you tap the phone, for people who have a bit more than basic knowledge on music theory it can be a bit mind numbing.

Been using Yousician for 6 months now. Never played a guitar at all, and now i am progressing really well, level 7 on lead and rhythm. Still trying to get my pinkie finger to work.
At times i get demotivated but then again those weekly challenges made me try harder and play even more. I play about 2 hours a day and felt really guilty if i missed a day.
They even have quick lessons if you want to learn but in a rush.

I’m a Yousicician student but only for Piano. I totally recommend new piano players to use it. I’m using the free plan so only get a few minutes to practice but doing it everyday I’ve gotten so much better. And beforehand I already was pretty educated on music theory but Yousician teaches it fairly well. However, recently I’ve tried the guitar section and don’t recommend using it to learn guitar. At the beginning it just lets you play one notes or just a select few notes. So, no chords are being taught or anything. I love Yousician for learning piano but not to learn to play guitar.

I have been using yousician for learning bass guitar. I really like it, but I feel like it's hard to learn music theory with it. It definitely has taught me to read tabs and play along quickly. It also seems more rewarding to me than taking in person lessons (I took guitar lessons for 6 months and hated it)
Ya, I think sometimes it works better for some people than in person lessons. Do you think you've learned enough with Yousician already to continue on yourself? Or do you rely on Yousician to teach you right now?

Nice video! My father is a guitar teacher and he recommends this app for his students as practice. Although he doesn't suggest using the app as an alternative for in person lessons. I play the guitar but I haven't tried the app, I prefer just my dad's lessons.

As an experienced guitar player looking to learn the piano I ended up using Yousician for piano. But I’ve found that I really like it as a practice tool for guitar. The gamified approach really works for me because I get much deeper into the practice. I’m so easily distracted otherwise.
I especially enjoy the challenges.
There are a few things I don’t like about it. A lot of the music is pretty cheesy. But since it’s a practice tool it doesn’t bother me that much to be honest.
Also the software does not teach you or reward tone and expression. Which is fine for a beginner, but once you are getting the hang of the instrument you should really start to become more expressive in your playing. And and sometimes the app will tell you that you are playing wrong when doing so.
A good example is timing. Especially with the bass module I’ve found that even though I play with the groove of the song Yousician will tell me that my timing is wrong because I don’t play according to their notation.
But overall I think it’s a great complement to other tools. I would not use it as the only source for learning an instrument. But if you like the gamified approach, like I do, it’s a really good practice tool.

Im level 7.
It works very well if you complement Yousician with a daily warmup/practice, learning new song ( first with tab , then by ear ASAP) regularly, be curious with the theory and most important, get a good guitar teacher ;) .

I just signed up for Yousician and so far I am loving it for learing Ukulele. I have progressed more in the last few days using Yousicican than I did with almost a year of weekly in person guitar lessons.

I started from zero five months ago and now I’m at level 10. I learned mainly in yousician but also learn songs I liked via youtube. I like yousician since the gamification kept me motivated. I’m a gamer and always enjoyed guitar hero type rhythm games so you could probably say I’m their target demographic. I think it’s good tool to build up speed and muscle memory. But I feel it fell short teaching you to count in time. I played some piano so keeping in time isn’t totally foreign to me, but for a complete novice it could be hard switching from rhythm game style to actually playing on time from tabs. Another cons is that it doesn’t really teach strumming patterns especially on rhythm track. They mostly focus on switching chords. This is probably technical limitation as they can’t detect up and down strum, also it has problem when strumming is too fast.
Thank you for being so honest in your opinion! Because of this video I didn't subscribe to Yousician. I'm gonna try and learn it through UA-cam as there are a ton of video's available to learn the guitar.. I really like both your review about flowkey and this one about yousician and I really appreciate it that you are truly honest regarding your reviews because you point out both positive and negative aspects of each application and also focus to some degree on free alternatives.👏👏👏👏👏👏
Sadly there are many so called "honest" reviewers in relation to music, for instance there are many musicians or youtube teachers who make an "honest" review about a popular singer's or band's song and they just say how breathkaking, well and beautiful everything whithout giving reasons and analazyng which part of a certain song is worth admiration and why, all of these "honest" reviewers just show the bright, noce side of a singer's singing in a music video, or in a live video whithout also showing and ellaborating details about parts of a song which may be sung well but with a wrong singing technique, and without giving alternatives on how to fix that and they especially not focus on the parts of a song which are sung bad.
I mean that's why they are supposed to be singing teachets/coaches, they should ne able to give a reasonable and professional review in relation to their acumullated knowledge as music teachers and state it if something id done wrong when someone sings.It's like theu are afraid that the singers/artists they make the reviews of would sue them or something and they forget what honesty in an honest review means just stare thete in their own youtbe video reviews with their mouths open wide, ating "wow this is so beautifull,wow such a low/hign note" which just the part of the overall appeance but not the entire truth of a song.
No offence but come on, I mean no matter how much of fame and polpularity some singers have in the world, there are those singers who have a great vice as they kept working hard and practiced good thechniques and there are singers who only rely on their image, fame, money and who especially rely on autotune to sing a good song.Also no matter how much of a great technique, voice and talent a artist/singer may have there are bound to be mistakes as no one is perfect in this world, humans are imperfect and that's what makes us humans

I just started with Yousician. I’ve played a lot of wind instruments in high school and college but I’m definitely not a pro musician. When I tried standard guitar lessons in my 30s I never really caught on and understood chord progression and transitions. I got frustrated and quit. 10 years later picking up a guitar with Yousician I wondered about the string plucking too, but I thought it was fun playing the game. This has taught me string position and muscle memory and I’m finding it much easier to find and change chords within the first week. More so than I did with traditional lessons. Just my take on it.

I'm new to Yousician. I like to switch between practicing the lessons and playing/practicing songs, that I like. Some of the lessons can be a chore to get through, but the songs keep you invested.
I love the yousician app. It has a guitar hero style and I am enjoying it very much. I love how it builds dexterity. I still practice my chords with this chord app I have. It's cool.

Hey, thanks for the video. I've been using the free version of Yousician for a few weeks and I really enjoy it. I do agree with some of your criticisms. For me, the most important part of Yousician is actually the gamification. I really enjoy that. And Yousician gets me to pick up the guitar every day. So after my free lesson time is over I'll continue practicing songs I either already know or learning new ones with the help of UA-cam videos.

I’d definitely recommend Yousician. I am currently doing my free trial as an actual beginner and I disagree with starting with chords as I would have found it too difficult and would’ve been disheartened (and probably given up). However, great video🤗

So Yousician I use it for the keyboard piano. I like the way they go about motivating new musicians like myself. I use it as a guide to support my learning. I also like the setting where you can change it from the colorized notes to just plain notes. The built in practice mode has also helped with other songs outside of Yousician. I didn't even think about timing until I tried playing a song on Yousician that I knew. Everything seemed off, until i had slowed the tempo in practice mode. As a beginner, I really wanted to learn the song nuvole bianche. Yousician has taught me a structure based way to learn new songs in a certain pattern. Learn the rhythm, break the song down into parts. Break the song down into one handed single notes, add the second hand with still single notes with practice, add the chords to one hand with practice, add the chords in one hand with single notes in the other hand with practice, add chords to both hands, practice arpeggiation of chords and so on. The one thing that I did have to learn on my own was hand positioning and I will admit, it still isn't the best. I've only used Yousician for about 4 months and I notice that my regular practice was more worthwhile since I had an idea of what I needed to improve on. Then I pluck the keys for inspiration, and I find myself learning new rhythms based off the songs that Yousician presented me. I am also proud to say that after my 1 year journey in learning the piano, I am almost finished learning the difficult piece that I only dreamed of playing at first. So overall, I think Yousician is a good baseline for motivating new musicians to learn on their own. I see it as a guideline and it gives me hope that one day, I will be able to learn that difficult piece. I didn't know where to start and I am now teaching myself more advanced arpeggiation patterns, as well as focusing on my hand positioning and timing (main areas of weakness).
Really like your take on Yousician and thank you because I've been wanting to hear the thoughts from someone who has been dedicated to it for awhile. It sounds like it helped you kick off and learning, provide some structure, and keep you motivated which area all good things.
I think I'm just going to get tab books from artists I want to learn from and theory books. And not even search for tabs online. It's probably useful. But I just prefer doing it the way I'm familiar with.
Im a Yousician student. I started to play drums 4 years ago and keyboard 2.5 years ago. Now i want to progress my learning with Yousician and love it. I also started to learn Ukulele 2 weeks ago, and since Yousician also have singing i do some singing lessons now and then too. I love Yousician +++. I personally love Yosician, I am a huge gamer and the gamified approach that the app offers is fun and engaging for myself. Not to mention it's full of great knowledge. I just started playing about three or four days ago and I had no idea what fret was, what different strings on the guitar were called, or what different chords were such as E minor or A minor. The app taught me a plethora of knowledge that was easy for me to understand. I could constantly go back and forth to different lessons slow down songs speed up songs and it was encouraging to see my score rise as I continued to practice. As of now I've been playing non-stop for 3 days. It's the point that my fingertips are literally sensitive and sore to the touch. If it wasn't for that I would still be playing right now.

Hello charles. I was very keen and was asking everyone to find a cracked version of yousician, or 2-3 days after I would have bought the subscription.
But thanks to you, that I searched for the same on youtube and found your video. I found my thinking was similar to you, its making me to play a song that I haven't even heard of. So I can't vibe on it. and that drawback I observed in the free lessons also. I would surely be consistent and learn from youtube, will meet you one day, god knows how. But Thank You.
I have been trying to learn first the bass and then the guitar for over 20 years and all I can do is play with them not make anykind of music. I've purchased three other courses over that time, Taken lessons from a music teacher and watched a lot of player. I have also invested a good sum of money in three electric guitars, three electric bass's and a really nice accoustic guitar. And I can't truly play anything on any of them. But I have one goal with my guitars and that is to get good enough that I can go into commercial guitar store and when a salesman askes me if I'd like to try one I can say sure!! With all that said I bought a one year subscription to Yousician and I absolutely LOVE IT!! I got a sale on it and got one year for around $80 if I remember correctly. When I bought it I didn't realize that I could use it to learn BOTH my bass and guitars. I am still struggling to learn this stuff as I don't have the "guitar gene" for sure but I am having fun and I can actually play eight cords cleanly and change between them. I have played and got "gold stars" on the first section of both guitar and bass courses. I will definitely renew my subscription and I will gladly pay double if that is what it takes I like it that much. If anything will make a guitar player out of me it will be Yousician! I truly love all the feed back, it knows when there is a dead string or I have played the wrong note all together. I cant' praise it enough. Thanks for the video too.

Great review. I would rather learn playing an instrument from a live instructor. I love JustinGuitar. This is the type of instructor I enjoy because he explains things in layman terms. I’ve always had problems with rhythm strumming and after going through Justin’s videos I enjoy playing my guitars now and just playing the different chords and different strumming patterns. I'm a published Hollywood songwriter, pianist, studio recording artist, etc. I have my own tech and media company but haven't had a lot of time to work on my technique lately. The best thing Yousician does for me is that it brings my music projects back on a conscious level and motivates me to practice more and learn more things. For me, it's more of a refresher course to revisit and/or improve my instrumentation. I also went through some of the singing tutorial but I made a hundred on all of those. I need to work on my instrument techniques more. So for me it's a great thing. I would also recommend this to young people who are just starting out on a new instrument and it might even improve the technique of a beginning band student for example who might be behind in school band. I have been using Yousician for learning ukulele and guitar. My main instrument is bass, which I have been learning with a teacher for about 4 years now. In my situation (having a solid grasp on music theory and another stringed instrument) you can get a lot out of Yousician.
I’ve been using Yousician since quarantine began. I have stuck to it moving up the leaderboards in the specific categories (Lead, Rhythm, and Knowledge.) Since I had never picked up an instrument before this I would say I am astronomically better than where I started but I do wish I had a teacher to be able to notice areas and ways that I may need to improve that is unique to my playing style. I’m not sure what I am doing wrong sometimes and would love coaching. Other than that it’s been a great experience! I’m really hoping to make it through the full Yousician course to “beat the game” I guess lol. I’ve also been playing video games all my life so I enjoy the approach. Hoping to be able to communicate artistic expression through music one day and I feel like I’ve made huge strides with Yousician
Need more actual screen shots of the product and a more detailed discussion of lessons etc. at this point I really don't know if I even want to try it out. A comparison with rock smith 2014 and other apps again with screen shots would be a good place to start. also a list of other apps to evaluate.

Charles Cleyn, I practise guitar once a day at about 7:00.On my first few try’s, I had already nearly mastered frets! The app is quite straight forward and that certainly helps.

Thanks man! I appreciate this honest review. I had never heard of Yousician until just the other day when I saw Metallica post on IG stating that they were being added to Yousician's artist series, and you could learn to "play like Metallica!" which got me excited, but now I'm not so sure. There are plenty of videos of how to play Metallica songs on UA-cam already.
I just downloaded it because I saw some adds with James Hetfield and Kirk Hammett suggesting it. I figure, if the are saying good things about it, then it must be good. So, I think I might give it a try. Thanks for your very informative video. You helped me make up my mind.
I'll say this first. Don't feel bad for using it.
I'll add another thing. I used it the first month or two from knowing nothing and it motivated me to put in those first 20 hours or so. I moved on to online lessons, learning songs through tab, and rocksmith leading to much better results. The main issue I had with Yousician is you don't really feel like you are learning the songs. I knew how to play and get high scores... but then you could ask me to play that song and I'd have no idea.
Not really a right or wrong set of statements, I just feel it's worth mentioning.

Personally I love yousician, I was a total beginner when I started using it and I'm using it to learn both the bass and the guitar.it has alot of useful information on there and I like how they build you up to playing full version of songs by having different difficulty levels according to how much of the song your playing. I have made a ton of progress with yousician,I do also watch youtube videos to get a different perspective on learning the guitar but as you said that can be overwhelming at times.my only criticism is the level of music theory,they do have the option to change the display so that notes are displayed but not on how to read those notes,I'm not sure it that will come in later lessons so I could be wrong.overall though I love yousician,for 10 pounds a month you cant go wrong.

@@jimbokraut640 I've never tried to be honest, you can slow the tempo though which is great as a few songs that are quite fast can be difficult to pick up so slowing them down to get to grips with it first helps a lot.

I used it for about a month when I first started playing and it was actually quite helpful because I learned all of the basic open chords by using it. But I ditched it for UA-cam and ultimate guitar right after that.

I start to learn uckulele on internet during my holidays but there was to many levels. I stopped and restarted on Yousician one year later. Its help me to play to my level each day. this discipline is very important, o i would defenetely recommend it for beginners.

You didn't mention the fact that yousician doesn't just show tabs and you're supposed to play along, it listens and tells you if you're early, late, if you're strumming the wrong string, if you have a dead string inside a chord, etc.
The one thing I found that doesn't work is the tuner... it works for Eddie and him eating his dynamite, but it doesn't work for checking intonation. It can't check to see if you're good on the 12th fret.
Regarding your comment about plucking notes, I think it's just getting you good at reading tabs. Because for us regular people who musically 🎵🎶 illiterate, tabs 🎶🎵 are the way to go!
I began playing when the covid 19 lockdown started and yousician is really helping me. I don't play video games and that part of it is just what it is, a way to grade your progress on a section and overall. I also really like how it tracks time, you can check it or wait for a notification showing your time.

Thank you. I almost purchased the Fender app, but I felt it was better to d0 research first. I will start with the free You Tube videos. Coursera also has a great free beginner course, but if you reset the deadline to give yourself more time, the course starts from the beginning and doesn't let you see subsequent weeks. So that's what lead me here. I got up to week 3 and I would've had to wait until June 15th to unlock the rest of the course. Anyways, thanks for sparing me from looking into Yousician.

For me, Yousician is pretty good. I’ve been away from guitar for years, and it’s giving me a helping hand in getting to know the guitar again. Once I complete the courses and get good enough, then I’m going to tackle the Metallica course:) However, I’m taking the rest of this year to hone my basic skills and get better in general.
I would say that I had a Guitar for around 10 years, but couldn't get motivated to learn that. But after experiencing the yousicion it has changed. I try to practice an hour daily. It keeps me involved. Highly recommend to anyone who doesn't know to play Guitar.
Happy with app as beginner,. Have not paid for app at all . Ok miss out on all the premium songs but not missed by myself. Being doing guitar for 6months and up to level 6. Get interruptions because free sub but ok with that. Have moved onto keyboard, yukule, and singing. Still enjoying.

I'm a total beginner on bass, I had just started online lessons when Yousician found me. Interesting concept that might fill the space of online learning with it being interactive so out of curiosity started the free limited option. Initially a breeze just covering stuff I'd recently done. It didn't explain some lessons/stages so they were just trial and error but very quickly the tracks became more complex and to be honest quite painful to listen to. My biggest frustration is with being told my notes are wrong when they are not (stop double check, loose your place and start again) and on the flip side lost your place so not playing anything but being told I've hit notes perfectly. Clearly a problem with the system, similar thing frequent alerts that I'm too loud!, not when I've forgotten to unplug my headphones.
This all sounds negative but I still visit often and look at the overall aspect it pushes me and think its helped me speed up and dexterity fretting in one sense but also bad habits might be creeping in alternate plucking can be reduced to random stabs trying to keep up.
I keep returning but the mundane tracks I think will end it at some point for me as I don't want to hear the music let alone play it and cannot move on. Maybe the free version is of a lesser quality.
I think your review is pretty spot on but for me the concept of the interactive feature is the major appeal but it not working 100% is a huge frustration.

Hi, just found and recommend this video to a friend that wanted to start learning the guitar. I have exactly the same opinion as you but regards to the piano and apps like Simply Piano. I do not think I could get anywhere near where I am today without a good teacher and by just relying on an app.

The plucking of the strings on the guitar tutorials are meant to be Harmony parts to play along with someone else who is doing the melody. I believe this skill would be valuable when playing along as a member of a band where you have a lead singer or guitarist carrying the melody.
I was tought by a teacher for two years by a friend who never thought gutair and he found a better job than his current one he had to move for it and i have been with yousican for almost 2 years with premium+ subscription wicth really helps i use it on my phone

I’ve been doing Yousician for a year and have made great progress. The main problem I have is that I don’t know what I would’ve learned if I had learned another way what I could have missed. I think the ‘gamification’ aspect is perhaps a limited way of looking at it. Have demonstrable feedback of how well you are doing (1 star to 3 stars and then perfect gold stars) feeds into direct feedback and is qualitative. Most teachers want to be able to ensure returns and if you stick with this you will. There are lots of features to help you practise. You can take the speed down and build it up so that you can pass a stage or beat your last attempt. You have regular songs which you can play, so it gives you a whole range. I suspect the songs they choose are supposed to be progressive in skill and therefore aimed at challenging the user. You can change the view so that it shows you the sheet music as you play or any combination of guitar music notation. It keeps you in good time which practising on your own wouldn’t. I do recommend this to my friends. Using UA-cam and other resources is also good. But this will keep pushing you as long as you want to be pushed.

which guitar should we buy first
this is a tough one and will depend on your budget but if you're just a beginner I would suggest spending about 100 on your first guitar. That's a good range. No need to get something expensive at first, once you're committed to the instrument then you should get something nice!

I studied and teach guitar since decades. Always on the lookout for new methods. My students initially liked to work with it. One after one gave up on it. I did the whole guitar, bass, voc course. I like the choice of material and the immediate feedback. I doesn't bother me if they do covers. Where it falls short is with fingerings, alt fingerings, the standard notation is transmitted very bad as of yet. I use it sometimes for warm-ups. Cheers and thanks for the vid!

The app gives beginners structure and feedback.. i feel like that is helpful with something so overwhelming as learning guitar. I don’t think watching random vids on youtube would do the same
I tried Yousician and also simply guitar and honestly I felt like I learned more on simply guitar. Like I’m just starting an Yousician a lot of times will give me songs or random tabs that are just out of my skill level so it’s either I butcher that song or play it in slow motion for an hour or more till I finally get it. But SimplyGuitar I feel like does a way better job at teaching you. Every song I play on it feels like it’s just barely out I my skill level but towards the end of the song I start picking it up and I actually feel like I’m progressing. Yousician it felt like a chor using it and simply guitar is actually fun for me. I will say the tuner on Yousician is way better though and also on Yousician I don’t have to have the phone up against the amp for it to pick up the notes and sounds unlike simply guitar. So I will agree Yousician is built really well.

some con that you missed - yousician force you to look at the screen and not at guitar and your hands. when you learn a song and especially when you learn to play an instrument you need to develop mind muscle connection. thats comes with practice. but when you are practicing you need to see what actually you are doing to react.
Good point about not looking at your guitar and hands when you play, it's good practice for playing standing up.

I’ve been collecting many videos and saving them to playlists. I save the ones I believe will help me and or move on to the next. I’ve made a Music Theory playlist (something I’m very week on) and a random guitar lesson playlist (probably going to go through that and break them down into riffs, solos/scales, songs etc). I’m not a complete beginner. I know the first position open chords and barre chords. Don’t think I’ve come across Marty Music yet. I’ll have to check him out.

I think its really good. I am absolute beginner. Am playing a big ole dreadnought acoustic. I pulled back due to price was it worth it? I tried youtube, I didnt get on with justin guitar at all. I cant see what fingers he is using on what strings.... but yousician, its great I am making progress far beyond what I expected. Ok my fingers hurt, but the joy playing chords and riffs its amazing to me. i love it.

I'm frustrated with the app all the sudden half my strings won't tune right so now I can't advance with the lessons I don't know if it's the app are my phone. OK it's the 19th of January I'm adding on to this comment which was a month ago I downloaded the app on a new phone and it's working perfectly now so it was me not the app in just the past 3 weeks I have made so much progress my son is playing it now he says it's really fun it's just like Guitar Hero and I told him no it's not like Guitar Hero you're actually learning how to play a real instrument anyways the people that made this did a pretty awesome JOB

Played around with the free version of Yousician for a few years, I play uke,and I’m trying to learn guitar and bass guitar. I think it’s overpriced unless you can commit to use it for a decent time per day.however I just got premium + for half price so in uk that’s only £59.99 about the price of a speciality coffee or a double whisky a month so I think that’s quite good. I’ve also learnt a lot off of UA-cam and I agree with your suggestions but I think Yousician great for practise and finger placement also speed, I’m currently learning bass for 1st time and it’s quite fun.
It’s not a be all and end all. But I feel you dissed it a little swiftly. I think it’s a tool for your Arsenal together with you tube and maybe even a real teacher.

I can't find any good keyboard instructors for children on UA-cam, any suggestions? Also, The singing lessons on Yousicians are good but too short. Do you know any good free apps for singing lessons? I think Yousician is great for children, but w\our budget is too tight at the moment to pay for a subscription.
Hi Tom, unfortunately I can't recommend any keyboard instructors that might be good for kids, I think you could find something on youtube but it might take some time to dig through the videos to get the best fit. As for singing lessons, I think youtube could also be a good starting point. For example, someone like Cheryl Porter who has a big channel and lots of free videos on the fundamentals of singing, that could be a good place to start! Hope that helps.

No doubt yousician is a great tool to learn. I would not be putting in hours of structured practice a week without it

Charles Cleyn not only does it keep me focused but its developing my finger dexterity and hitting cords is becoming easier and easier due to constant practicing. Of course you can develop these skills without yousician but so far i have 20 hours of direct practice in just 2 weeks. Theres no way i would’ve done that amount of time on my own. All i want from yousician is to be able to effortlessly play notes and that comes with thousands of repetitions; yousician is really helping me with that

Just to let everyone know you can google Yousician free trial and there is a 30 day free trail they don't advertise. I just signed up for it as i was just using it free but i wanted more then 15 minutes of practice. I'm a complete Beginner basically as i've tried plenty of times to learn guitar and it always frustrated me. Yousician with Justin Guitar and Rocksmith has been awesome for me. Since i went premium 30 day trail in the last 2 days i've put in 8 hours and can already tell the difference. So Yousician is awesome for me as it helps my technique and timing. I still suck but now i'm actually hitting the strings i'm supposed to be hitting. LOL my main problem was hitting the wrong strings or getting confused at which finger to fret with etc.. and Yousician has been helping me immensely because it shows which fingers to use by color code and until i get comfortable and muscle memory with hitting the correct strings and correct finger placement on the frets Yousician is exactly what i needed to get me past the hardest parts or learning imo.
The color coding definitely helps, hope you enjoy your learning!
The way they break things up helped me learn the time signatures easier.
