Spear fished in the sardine shoals many times. That was in the 70's and 80's when I lived on the South Coast. In hindsight now that I am 67 it was a unique and privileged experience.
Sardines could teach Rugby Players a thing or 2 about the Art of the Sidestep! Another fascinating observation is that if we take the Sardines out of the equation the Dolphins, Gannets & Humans for that matter would probably be munched by the Sharks. But when Sardines are around all of the Parties are exclusively focused on the Sard Bounty and seemingly ignore each other.
The shoals that come close to shore is a small percentage around 1to 3% the bigger shoal are very deep and further back the shoal can be Km’s long and wide
Gigi o so they spawn at the west cape Agulhas side and move ‘past cape town then Pe side then past our coast lines , they travel huge distances and sometimes we don’t even see them as they to deep or the currents and temperature not conducive for them .
Wow! soo much of sardines 😄 .what happens to da money thats paid to these guys that net them out.I remember sardines used to wash up on shore and people used to b there at the tym and pick has much has they want.nw it looks like a money making thing
These netters have to pay for a license to net , for the fuel the Labour which adds up to a lot per day . They travel 3 to 4 km per day at times . They sell the sardines to people or fish shops. People still go to beach and grab from behind the net or in the water 💦.no one pays them, they have to pay to be able to net and sell

This is AMAZING! I've learnt so much, Thank you Andy! When and how do the sardines go back down to the wild coast? Is it not done as a mass migration?
