Are there girls in engineering? Is it common to see women in STEM? These are commonly asked questions and a lot of you want to know the answer, so you’ll find the answers in this video! Since I’m a guy, I obviously can’t answer them, so I asked my fellow engineering female classmates for their answers. Timestamps are as follows:
    00:00 Intro
01:37 How many girls were in your classes?
02:47 What made you choose engineering?
04:01 Do you feel like you get treated differently (by profs) because you’re a girl?
05:13 Which engineering major do you think has the most girls? Why?
06:14 Which engineering major do you think has the least girls? Why?
07:11 Do you think guys in your class have a crush on you?
08:02 Are guys in engineering awkward?
08:58 How do people react when they find out you’re an engineer?
11:08 When did you first learn what engineering was?
12:12 Do you regret choosing engineering?
13:37 Girl studying or finding a hubby in engineering?
14:52 Any last words of advice? Or interesting stories you want to share?

There were a few in all my classes. I remember our professor asked the class about why there aren't more. One guy said they aren't good at math and he got booed lol. Two of the best engineering professors I had were women. They were very good at testing on material that they actually taught. So many male professors would teach on thing and test on totally obscure engineering problems.

😩 I'm sorry you had to deal with teachers like that. I know some of that pain. I had a Calc prof who liked to brag how half his students would fail the course and dude, that's a reflection on your incompetence as a teacher, not their inability to learn b/c they're special snowflakes or whatever prejudice he was trying to blame. We brought it to the Board, he didn't improve, and he has since been let go. I say this to give you some solace that things are slowly changing.

TLDR: I think theres a mix of people. theres the bigots, theres those that are avoidant bc theyre unfamiliar, theres ppl who treat u normally, and theres those that give you special treatment. Also, the education environment feels more accepting than the employment environment.
    _______________
i just finished my first year of mechanical engineering and so far ive taken 2 design classes. my first one i was in a group of all girls. my professor was a bit of a bigot in general towards minorities and he gave us a harder time when we were giving presentations but i think it was just to piss us off cuz we all ended up with decent grades lol, so basically it was just pettiness. my second design class, i was in a group of 3 girls and 1 guy. he treated us like we were his bros. my professor was a pretty chill person in general and kinda uplifted us actually. well there was an instance i used a fabric made of crochet for our project, and we were struggling with making the project work, so my prof was very skeptical about it and blamed the crochet, but it ended up not being the problem. I think that's just the engineering world not being familiar with more "feminine" crafts, but crochet is such a valuable handicraft that brings a lot to the table. kind of an untapped world.
My theory classes now- in materials science, i was one of 2 girls in the class, and towards the middle of the semester the only girl that showed up. I know there was a group chat that no one invited me to, and none of the ppl in my class spoke to me. In mechanics of solids, there were actually several girls, but thats because they were from different engineering majors. The guys in my major did not speak to me except one. He was very popular and had a lot of friends, but his friends from our major did not speak to me ever even when we were in a group setting. he was the only one who'd speak to me. The professors never treated me any differently. Actually I think my solids professor was more lenient with me bc the syllabus stated no late submissions for homework were allowed but he let me submit my missing homework after the semester ended to boost my grade lol (with a penalty but still) and he rounded my grade up.
In terms of ppls reactions to me telling them my major- when i tell women, they're like omg you're so smart good for you etc. The only back lash I got was when i told my family. My dad was originally disapproving and while he didnt tell me explicitly he didnt want me to do it, hed make subtle jabs at it here and there. my grandpa on my dads side straight up told me it was for men, and my uncle on my dads side is against women working in general lol. but my mom's side is fine with it.
Overall, I think theres a mix of people. theres the bigots, theres those that are unfamiliar, and theres ppl who dont gaf. i think ppl get scared away from engineering because they think its hell for women and you're gonna be treated specifically worse than others, but from my experience so far thats not the case, at least in the education sense. HOWEVER i will say at career fairs and recruiting sessions, recruiters HAVE treated me as if i was stupid. ive been ignored, interrupted, and shoved to the side for other candidates in the middle of me talking. So i think the world of employment is still behind. hopefully by the time i graduate things will be okay.

I would advice you agianst it many of them are masculine and for some reason they 99% are feminist men hater who think it's equality to shit on men for some reason. So treat them nicely like any guy as you should, but never ever date anyone of them.

The beauty queen is not a good representation of an engineer. She’s not working as one and most young people, especially girls, would be fooled into thinking that engineering is more glamorous/ fashionable than it actually is.

I am doing mechanical engineering in India and I didn't know that this problem was worldwide. In India you can find enough software engineering girls but when you go to mechanical and civil there are very few of them . I don' t know why is this so. This not only impacts diversity in engineering but it also has some impacts on us boys (doing engineering) having spending a large chunk of time without any interaction with other sex.🥲🥲
